I hightly doubt he damaged the catalytic converter (coincidence), as far as the a/c not working, anything is possible. He could have kinked an a/c line when doing the timing belt but i've never seen it happen. Just have the former mechanic check the a/c for leaks then have him show you were it's at and you be the judge.

I have an 01' Santa Fe w/ 120k miles I have recently replaced the following.
1. Timing Belt, water pump, tensioner, v belts.
2. Transmission Input Sensor (went out after shortly after timing belt).
3. Transmission Output Sensor (went out shortly after input sensor).
After all the above- everything appeared to be OK, so I figured I'd replace the front and rear motor mounts to get rid of the clunk when I put it in reverse and lessen some of the engine vibration. I was told by a mechanic they could use replacement.
4. Replaced front and rear motor mounts.(Mechanic also told me he "added some coolant")
A day later while sitting with the AC on, the truck started smoking a whole lot. The smell was unfamiliar to me, but I turned the AC off and it subsided. On the way home I stopped past a Service station and the mechanic said it smelled like refrigerant to him. I noticed the air coming out of the vents was not very cold even though the compressor clutch was running. I haven't ran the AC since. A couple of days later the Check engine light came on with a code of 0421.
What could've gone wrong?Could the mechanic who put on the motor mounts ruined something in the AC system as well as my O2 sensor or Catalytic converter? Your thoughts please.
