Hi,
I own a 2008 hyundai sonata 4cyl with 23000 miles. I notice that the original Michelin tires are
quite worn. This same thing happened with my other car Toyota Avalon with 29000 miles.
I see the price of the Michelin's are 177.00 each OUCH!! My question is what other brand tire
fairs well with the Hyundai?? My toyota has hankook tires, they were much more reasonable
than the Michelin's.

Thanks, Steven btw - I like the hyundai to drive better than the avalon, better mileage.

This is a long time discussed topic since the 2006 NF Sonatas began rolling out to the public. The Michelin's have been a very poor choice for Hyundai with poor mileage. I hope the 2009 choice of Hankook tires works better.
(IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif) I have 32,000 miles on my 2006 V6 Limited. Michelins are shot and I will be replacing them with Cooper CS4 Touring all seasons next week!

I'm in the same situation and shopping for new tires. I asked the best all around tire for my Sonata 2007 V6 to 5 different tire dealers and they all recommended the Toyo Tourevo LS. I went on the net to see users reviews and they are highly recommended for their silence, durability, handling and rain condition. That's going to be my next tire purchase! Oh! they are not that expensive too!

When I switch out the Michelins, I'm considering the Kumho Ecsta LX Platinums.
600 tread rating, $109/each Tire Rack, good reviews.

I have Kuhmos on my car right now and they are less than stellar. Basically the tire does not excel in any category but at the same time they are not horrible. I have absolutely no confidence in the tire when it is wet out but the funny thing is they are not that bad in the snow. Who knows, I will definately be switching soon.

This is a case where the original tires have a premium name (michelin) but they are factory tires which are almost always garbage.

My other car is a ford taurus - same story - Pirelli tires - good name but they are factory installed garbage.

That said - consumer reports liked Falkens - if you believe in CR.

The Michelins on my 2007 Sonata at 33K miles look barely worn. I expect to get 50-60K out of them Thats mostly highway miles. I put yokohamas on my 2003 Sonata at 50K. It had michilens on it too if I recall correctly.

Kumho Solus KH16. Tire Rack is selling them for $77 ea.

I have 700 miles on the tires, quieter, smoother and handles much better than the stock Michelin.

23,000 and your Michelin are worn? You must be driving on gravel.... I just turned 26,000 and mine look almost like new.....

If you must really have all season, try the F1 all season by good year.
They're a bit pricy at 190 a piece, but they are rock solid. They are rock solid I had them on another vehicle, not this one, but they are really good for all season.

I herd the F1s are very slippery in wet conditions.. Before I had my idea to put new rims on, I was going to shoot for the Goodyear EgaleResponsedge they are rated high on Tirerack, good price, the thread design is cool..

I will say that I have F1 GS2s on my 06 Max currently. They are slipperier than my HTR ZIIIs on my Sonata (on WET conditions), but at 98 bucks a piece, you can't really go wrong. They're very solid. F1 GS2s are high performance summer tires so it focuses on traction (and lots of it) in dry conditions. The F1 all season, which I had on another car, is pretty well balanced. Won't beat a GS2 in a drag race any day but will run circles around it in wet - snow conditions...obviously. But you get what you pay for. the all season is twice as much.

I think the geographic location of someone is the key in choosing the right tire.
I live in southwest Texas, we haven't seen rain in 3 months, I can rock max summer tires all year round no problem. Go to the north eat and forget about it lol

Same for me. 31K and looks barely worn. I have no complaints with my tires.

I think some the issues are on whether you have the V6 or I4. Most of the V6 drivers complained about wear and teh usual issues. The smaller size and different model Michelins on the I4 don't get rave reviews but not real poor either. Much of it depends on the model not just brand. I've had Michelin Cross Terrains on my Sequoia that were OK but wore quickly and got real crappy at the end, and LTX M/S on my old explorer that were the best I ever had. I'll proably get about 40k out of teh Michelin's on my Sonata (MXV4 S8) and will need to see when I replace. A friend just bought the Michelin Pilot Exalto A/S to replace the same (MXV4 S8) on his Accord and has nothing but great stuff to say so far (he doesn't drive easy either in all weather).

One big experience for me over the years with all my Michelins was the balancing. I've had numerous ones that needed ZERO weights put on or very minimal where other models were just a total PITA to balance and never stayed in Balance even with the GSP9700.

i got the General Altimax HP's.. so far, so good after about 13k miles upon replacing my factory Mich's.. good on dry, good on wet, good in slush.. havent had deep snow yet, so cant comment on those... they are like $85/tire on Tire Rack... good ratings, good reviews...

Am at 32.3k on my 2006V6 - with non-aggressive driving and have only 2/32 thread left on the rears and 5/32 on the fronts. (Just rotated). Perhaps another 3k to go before I start shopping. So keep this thread going....

I plan on putting these on my Sonata next week. $89.50/tire mounted, balance and with new stems.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?ti...+TOURING-S&

Forgot to add 37.5K on my OEM Michelin MX4's. If I lived in a warm weather climate I could get another 5-7K out of them easy, but with winter coming up here in Montana I feel I should have new shoes for the Sonata, I'm very close to the wear bars. I have no complaints with these tires whatsoever.

indeed the stock michelins are subpar to be kind. while i did manage to SQEEZE 28k(almost all highway) out of them, they are absolutely horrible in wet conditions and i had a bubble on one from pretty early on. the mileage doesn't really bother me much due to the fact it takes me 3 years to accumulate that mileage, at which point most tires need replaced regardless of mileage anyway due to dry rotting etc.

i just replaced them with maxxis ma-z4s tires 225/50/17 about 1 week ago for 88.15/tire from onlinetires. 420 tread rating; aa for grip; and a for temp. if you examine the tread pattern it is very similar to the general altimax's which are fairly highly regarded; but don't actually come in the stock size.

http://www.maxxis.com/AutomobileLight-Truc...Z4S-Victra.aspx

so far they out perform the michelins in every aspect; cornering/handling, noise, comfort, wet traction. the only question i am guessing will be the treadlife. i have taken some winding roads and pushed it a bit where the michelins would sqeal like pigs; and these are completely silent. while i don't have the altimax's; my guess is the maxxis tires probably sacrifice a slight amount of comfort and noise, while offering the same slight improvement in handling. will also be anxious to see how they do in the winter.

as far as the f1's are concerned, i seem to remember reading something in the last 2 days about a slient recall on a good lot of them.
