Hi everyone,

I have a diesel Santa Fe year 2006 and which is only driven 62 thousand km. Now when the car is 3 years old it no longer has waranty for any of the parts. Sadly the BorgWarner Coupling Assy-4WD is giving up (a ballbearing is broke). And I'm told that I have to change the whole unit. Over here in Iceland it's not available and the dealer says he will order a new one at my expense for $3200!!!! And then fit it in for some additional cost.

After doing some research I hear that this unit (i.e. viscous coupling) is rather weak and that it needs replacement in many Santa Fe's after 50-60 thous km. Does anyone know of this problem in Hyundai cars? And does anyone know the partnumber for this unit and a way to buy this directly from overseas - internationally. I don't like to be at the mercy of the Icelandic dealer and to have him rob me. I like to know if there is an "On-line" internet store and also if this unit can be fixed?

I appreaciate all your help and replies.

Welcome to the group! It's too bad you had to start with a problem.

There is a Hyundai dealer near Dallas, Texas, USA, which sells online. Emailing them may be a good way to start. You can contact them at:

Thank you for your reply, I tried to locate the part at the side you pointed out without success. However if this might help others who are sharing my problem I found another side: https://www.hyundaipartsonline.com/ where you can look up parts by part numbers. I am confident that I have the right number which I was able to "squeeze" out of my dealer (prtnr.: 47800-39000) so I'm hopeing that my problem will be solved soon. I haven't bought the part yet though. I'm going to check with the garage and my mechanic first. The prices in US (according to https://www.hyundaipartsonline.com) seem to be normal compared to Europe. If I get the part from the dealer here in Iceland or from a dealer in the Netherlands is about 10 or 11 times more expensive. The part which is priced about $500 in US is about $5-6000 in Europe. You guys in the States don't know what we are dealing with over here. The price here is criminal.

Anyways thanks for the reply. I hope my story can help someone. After I fix the car I'm going to sell it.
