OK, I finally got around to installing my HID's and creating this write up. I hope it is helpful!

Here is the place that I ordered my lights from:

http://www.ddmtuning.com/index.php?p=produ...2&parent=85 (thanks to ddix!)

I went with the 4500K, so they are not too blue. Also, I bought their "Error Code Eliminator - 3" to keep my computer happy, just in case. In the end, the whole deal cost less than $100 with shipping and the installation took me about an hour (granted I was taking pictures). The only thing that I would say is not so great about this kit is that the instructions provided in the kit are absolutely useless. However, you now have my step by step, and in the end, it is an easy install!

So, with out further delay, here is the installation!

Step 1:
Attached File  Step_1.jpg ( 110.57K ) Number of downloads: 49

Remove the headlight assembly. It is not hard, and it makes the installation much easier.

Step 2:
Attached File  Step_2.jpg ( 99.46K ) Number of downloads: 52

This bolt is the hard one, and it does take a little bit to get it out!

Step 3:
Attached File  Step_3.jpg ( 104.96K ) Number of downloads: 45

Remove the multi plug attached to the assembly.

Step 4:
Attached File  Step_4.jpg ( 89.14K ) Number of downloads: 34

Once you have removed the headlight assembly, you will need to remove this dust cover to access the OEM bulb (be sure that you are accessing the low beam bulb).

Step 5:
Attached File  Step_5.jpg ( 105.41K ) Number of downloads: 48

After you have removed the low beam dust cover, unplug the OEM bulb and release the retaining spring.

Step 6:
Attached File  Step_6.jpg ( 118.18K ) Number of downloads: 66

This is the HID bulb that comes in your kit (you get two of them), and the picture shows what parts you keep and what parts you discard.

Step 7:
Attached File  Step_7.jpg ( 101.44K ) Number of downloads: 54

You will need to drill a 7/8" in your low beam dust cover to allow the HID bulb's wires to pass through.

Step 8:
Attached File  Step_8.jpg ( 103.31K ) Number of downloads: 63

This shows the correct way to connect the power wires from the HID bulb into the connector that was attached to the OEM
bulb.

Step 9:
Attached File  Step_9.jpg ( 99.25K ) Number of downloads: 56

Pull the remaining HID bulb wires through the low beam dust cover. Then pull the grommet through and ensure that it provides a good seal.

Step 10:
Attached File  Step_10.jpg ( 106.87K ) Number of downloads: 55

Install the HID bulb, and secure with the retaining spring. Then slide the black plastic guard over the back of the HID bulb. Finally, put the power wires and connector inside the assembly and reattach the low beam dust cover.

Step 11:
Attached File  Step_11.jpg ( 121.12K ) Number of downloads: 60

This shows the finished installation of the HID into the assembly

Step 12:
Attached File  HID_and_Halogen.jpg ( 77.01K ) Number of downloads: 96

This shows the difference between the HID bulb and the OEM bulb in action.

Step 13:
Attached File  Full_HID.jpg ( 70.92K ) Number of downloads: 75

This shows both HID's.

A couple of closing notes....

The actual wiring is very straight forward. Obvious male to female connections to and from the ballasts and the HID bulb. The connector on the inside of the OEM low beam dust cover that powered the OEM halogen bulb is what provides the power for the ballast. The ballasts are digital, so they can use the power from the original factory wiring.

Finding homes for the ballasts was not easy. As you know, there is not much spare room under the hoods of our Sonatas. I ended up zip tying one of the ballast to the air intake hose, and double side foam taping the other one to the top of the window washer tank.

Finally, depending on the color temp you choose for your HID, you will want to change the color of your high beam halogen bulbs so that they match in color. I had to buy cool blue H1's to come close enough in color to my HID's.

All in all, this is a great project that makes an amazing difference in both looks and safety. I can only recommend it to my brother and sister Sonata drivers!

Good luck!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif)

Thats an excellent write up! I know it would have helped me a lot last year when I was trying to install my HID Kit! I am sure other Sonata members will find this very useful, thanks a lot (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

How did you wire the ballasts, which draw a lot of juice? Are yours digital? Did you wire them directly to the factory wires? Any issues so far? Why is the sky blue? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)

Very nicely done; the write up will certainly be helpful.

Does the Sonata need the error code eliminator?

Thanks.

The Sonata doesnt use those eliminators so see if you can get a refund, or throw them up on ebay.... Enjoy

How did you wire the ballasts, which draw a lot of juice?

Good question, I forgot to include that... Yes, I wired them directly into the bulbs. The power is being provided by the connector inside of the dust cover which is providing power from the original OEM low beam circuit.

QUOTE
Are yours digital?

Yes, they are digital.

QUOTE
Did you wire them directly to the factory wires?

Yes.

QUOTE
Any issues so far?

No, other than it does take a few seconds for the lights to come up to full power, but that is expected with HID's

QUOTE
Why is the sky blue? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/grin.gif)

The blue color of the sky is due to Rayleigh scattering. As light moves through the atmosphere, most of the longer wavelengths pass straight through. Little of the red, orange and yellow light is affected by the air. However, much of the shorter wavelength light is absorbed by the gas molecules. The absorbed blue light is then radiated in different directions. It gets scattered all around the sky. Whichever direction you look, some of this scattered blue light reaches you. Since you see the blue light from everywhere overhead, the sky looks blue. As you look closer to the horizon, the sky appears much paler in color. To reach you, the scattered blue light must pass through more air. Some of it gets scattered away again in other directions. Less blue light reaches your eyes. The color of the sky near the horizon appears paler or white. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

they look great, I went with 8k, I like to be different... They look amazing at night, with the projectors! Great cut off! I'm sure your are too! You have the slim ballast?

Take a look at these pics from my install, I just screwed the ballast into the body... The left side was tricky, I had to bend the little clip piece in order to get it where I wanted it.

Thanks!! I really like what you did with your ballasts... I am not happy with how I placed mine, so that is why I do not have pictures of them. Yes they are the slim ones... I will be shortly replacing the my horns for ones someone might actually hear, and I will have to remove my lights, bumper, and grill to do the install. At that point, I may try to remount my ballasts to better places... We will have to see! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)

Well it took a little bit to find some free time, but I completed my HID installation this past Monday. I purchased the 5000K bulbs. The HID kit is great - good price, no issues so far. Spielzeuge provided a perfect write up (the included instructions were really cryptic)! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumbsup.gif) Definitely the toughest parts were removing the third bolt (due to the tight space) and finding good spots to mount the ballasts. I ended up mounting one on top of the washer fluid tank and zip tying the other to the air intake hose, as Spielz did. Admittedly not the cleanest look under the hood, but it's functional. Here are a few pictures of the lights:

Hey Frozentax! Nice job! Glad you are happy with your lights and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif) much for the kind words! I see why you went with the 5k as they really look sharp with the color of your Sonata! I am sure you will enjoy your HID's very much! I know I love mine! Thanks again for sharing!
