Is this feasible? The 2009 unit without GPS. Spec sheet here: http://img32.imageshack.us/i/snfbe8003n.gif - this one obviously has the three connectors as opposed to the one on my 2006. Would I need to get an 09 wiring harness, wire together the correct existing cables, and manually wire in a usb/aux panel mount and conncetor? Hmm.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/whistling.gif)

I don't see how it would work. The shape of the head unit in the 2009 is not the same as the 06-08. It would not fit properly in the dash opening.

This is true, I kind of put the cart before the horse here. I was figuring I could get an approriate radio dash kit, but yes the 09 unit (after looking at some more pictures) seems wider.

I don't know how the rear cabinet part compares between the two but I think the main problem seems to be that the sides on the face of the 06-08 are completely vertical and the sides on the 09 are angled out at the top. This would interfere with the small panels at the side that house the hazard light switch and passenger seat belt light.

I guess depending on how bad you wanted this you might be able to have a custom panel fabricated to accept the newer head unit.

question is is it rally worth it? the 09 unit is not all that great and i think if you choose any aftermarket unit - kenwood or jvc you will have better sound plus less headache - just get the dash kit + all adapters and you are good to go. if you get 09 6cd unit you will need an amp cause it does not have one built in - unless your sonata has an amp already. so overall i would say its more headache than its worth - you won't have factroy look cause you need to modify 09 unit anyway so why not aftermarket h-u?

so that some car theif in Jersey has no good sounding music when he steals your car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/banana.gif) lol, nah really its true, I won't go aftermarket just because of theft problems where I live. They go straight for the Aftermarket radios. Even if you have a detachable face plate they know its usually in the glove compartment and chance breaking in still.

So I have a question if I wanted to install the 6cd version of 09 head unit
on a 2009 GLS without the 6cd and no amp, would it not work at all since I have no amp?
or would it just play out of the speakers I just have?

if it would play it would not play too lout - not enough power - so if you would like to add it you would need amp
