Hi All,

I have a 2005 Terracan, and have lately experienced a problem with either the automatic transmission or the 4wd transfer gearbox.
My model is a 2.9CRDI with an automatic 4wd system. (no 2wd drive option).

The car is making a loud squeaking/crunching sound when the engine is breaking the car. The fault occurred firstly when driving the car down a steep hill at 60mph. I immediately turned the car into neutral, and the sound disappeared.

I went to a mechanic today, and he claimed that this was not the automatic transmission, but rather the 4wd transfer gearbox. He also claimed that this was a normal fault on the Terracan. (Can anyone confirm..??), It would be nice if anyone could confirm this, before I start spending XXXX$, replacing the wrong parts.

The sound is present only when going downhill without any throttle. Apart from this the car behaves normally.

All help will be appreciated, Thanx guys.

Hi Again,

I found the following link describing identical symptoms on a Ford:

Seems like the transfer box needs replacement/repair, and it looks expensive..... :-(

All, short update:

The sound was as expected caused by the shifting fork in the tansfer case.
Apperently this is not uncommon for the BW Torque on Demand transfer case.
According to the dealer, it may happend if the oil is not replaced. (Although the service handbook does not specify service intervals. )

Anyway, It's a relatively easy-fix for any autmatic gearbox experts.
