I have been asking for my code for months and the head tech at my dealer claims the limp home info in the manual is a misprint and it does not exist. I pointed him to the procedure to set it on the hmaservice.com website and he said he knows it is there and feels they should issue a TSB about it. Has anyone experienced this? Were you given a limp home code? Thank you!

Excuse my ignorance but I have no idea what the "limp home" thing is all about. All I know is that I don't like the sounds of it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif)

Limp home mode does exist. Whenever you get an ignition problem that could do real damage to the engine like repeat misfire on the same cylinder or loss of signal from the TCU, the car will go into 2nd gear and stay there until it is reset. I don't know what "limp home code" means, usually clearing the trouble codes will reset limp home mode, but there may be something wacky about the Az.

The "Limp home code" is a four digit code that you cycle the key to start the car when the immobilizer warning light blinks on the dash. Described in the Owners’ manual, section 1, page 6.

From the Owners' Manual:

"Limp Home" Mode and Related
Procedures
If the immobilizer warning indicator blinks
for five seconds when the ignition key is
turned to the "ON" position, this indicates
the immobilizer system requires service.
The engine cannot be started without using
the procedure below.
The following procedure describes how to
start the engine using the limp home function
(0, 1, 2, 3 as a sample password).

NOTE:
You can get a limp home password when
the vehicle is first delivered to you. If you
do not have a password, consult your
authorized Hyundai dealer.
1. To activate the password, turn the ignition
key "ON" and "OFF" according to
the digit numbers. The immobilizer indicator
will blink along with the operation
of the ignition key. For example, turn the
ignition key once for digit number "1",
and twice for "2", and so on. For the digit
number "0", you must cycle the ignition
key 10 times.
2. Wait for 3~10 seconds.
3. You may set the remaining number of
digits by following steps 1 and 2.
4. If all of the four password digits have
been successfully entered, turn the ignition
key "ON" and check that the immobilizer
indicator illuminates. From
this time, you have to start your engine
within 30 seconds. If you try to start your
engine after 30 seconds, your engine
will not start.

The system is covered in the shop manual at hmaservice.com, in the Azera section: G 3.8 V6 DOHC /Body Electrical System / Immobilizer System /

The immobilizer system will disable the vehicle unless the proper ignition key is used, or the system cannot read the code in the key, or the system malfunctions.

"Limp Home" is real. I didn't have mine enabled, I figure I'll just call AAA and have the car towed to a dealer, get some use out of my annual AAA+ fee...

Limp Home is real. My dealer programmed mine twice because I did not like the first number. It CAN BE DONE. Get in touch with customer service or the District Parts & Service Manager.

Gator65, thanks for the confirmation that it exists! I originally went to the District/Regional service manager and then to National in California and received no concrete answers. They always say go back to the dealer and the dealer is useless. Now that I know my dealer is uninformed or ????, I’ll go back up the ladder. It sounds like you have a good dealer. Thanks!

I can also verify that the "limp home mode' is for real. I had it programmed with 4 numbers of my choosing. I sat in the car while the tech used the hand held computer which was attached under the dash. It certainly exists.
