I have a 2005 XG 350 with 33,000 miles on it and I use Pennzoil Synthetic 5W-20. When I accelerate from 0 to about 40 it sounds like I have a valve train rattle. I t quiets around 40 MPH. When I had it in for it's 3o,ooo mile check up I brought it up and they drove it and said it sounded OK to them, I'm deft in one ear and I can hear it, so much for them. I was thinking maybe it could be the hydraulic lash adjusters and if so how do you quite them? All is quite when it idles and it sounds OK when you rev the engine up sitting still. Could this be a transmission noise?

if the engine is quite at idle and is also quite when you rev the engine l think you can rule out possible engine noise, so yes it may be the trans. or torque converter. but without hearing it it's difficult to say, l suggest you try and take it for a second opinion

Dear squid,

Deaf in one ear and still hear the noise? Get a friend and take them for a ride. Friend in right front seat, windows down. Try varying the speed to identify if the noise is consistent at one speed, and also note the rpm. Now, can you make the engine repeat the noise in a lower gear but at the same rpm??? If yes, the noise is from your engine. If no or the rpm where the noise occurs has changed, it is not the engine but more likely the transmission. If the friend says you are nuts he can't hear a thing...then the dealer is right.

Two things you can try: An quality engine oil flush can clean out the galleries and the tiny...I mean tiny holes in your hydraulic valve adjusters. Even running syhnthetic oil in your engine can still cause clogging over time.

Second, use an engine 'quiet' product like STP Oil Treatment or Bardahl's No Smoke to quiet any remaining noise.

Byron

Well it's been awhile but I was finally able to connect up with the factory rep about the dieseling noise I was hearing in my 2005 XG 350. It would go away after about 40 mph. He drove the car and said it was definitely in the transmission probably the last drive gear. They're going to replace the transmission in the car. I've read about this problem on a few Hyundai forums and it was always solved by replacing the transmission. I was ready to argue but they were just as nice as good be, sort of took the wind out of my sails. They'll order it in the morning and will probable take a couple weeks to get here so will update after it's installed and let you know how it drives.

They replaced the transmission and the noise is gone and everything is running perfect. Shifts nice and smooth and I ran it thru it's paces and can't find no faults, I'm happy.
