Many posters on this forum have been implying that I'm out-of-my-tree because I say our Azera is doing the very same thing.
After the original shocks plus two replacement sets, I'm convinced Hyundai picked the wrong supplier (Mando) for factory shocks.

Our car has only 18K miles. What will it be like at 40K? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif)

Nobody makes a replacement shock. Nobody!

You can order replacement struts on kdmstuff.com or kspec.com. Costs range between $1100 and $1900. I haven't tried it and haven't seen anyone else try it either. I did do an experiment with the H&R springs, which I had yanked again but during the process I had alignments carried out and I feel the car behaves a bit better at high ways speeds. Alignments don't cost much, so you may want to have it done to see if it gets better.

We have updated results for the Hyundai Azera. In terms of successful repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2007: 43, average, but close to "better than average"

2006: 77, about average

A big thanks to everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in May, August, and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years. We especially need more 2008s and 2009s.

We'll have updated results next month. Additional participants would be helpful, as we're currently short of the minimum sample size for both the 2006 and 2007. More participants needed to even include the 2008+ in the survey.

Mike, the 'grinding' noise you hear could be the starter motor's gears. If the gears don't retract properly, they'll make a racket as they hit the teeth on the flywheel. It's not a major fix - most dealers spray the gears with some lubricant and the noise goes away.

The clunking noise you guys are hearing is from the shocks themselves. Each shock has a top locking nut that needs to be secured in a very . . . well . . . secured way. Its a nut with plastic lining that acts as loctite but can unscrew itself nevertheless. When the top nuts gets slightly loose, it starts to knock against metal. Hope this helps.

I did not have a problem with the rear sunshade but I do not leave it in the up-down mode unless I need it. That is, if it's a cloudy day, there is no need to have it constantly go up and down. I don't think it was designed for that. However, if the gears are the weak component of the sunshade, then they will go faster.

It is interesting reading the posts here. I purchased a 2009 Azera LTD in August last year. It currently has only 6,500 miles on it (it is my wife’s car - driven around town mostly). I completed both the CR survey and am registered on True Delta. I have had no repairs other than normal maintenance checks and services. It has performed very well over these first 11 months. In my opinion, they have addressed the suspension issue for the most part. You do notice the small bumps in the road and is somewhat soft in cornering and handling bigger bumps. At highway speeds it is very smooth and very quiet.

I will be interested to see how well it performs over the next 12 months as we accumulate more miles on it. I, like many of you, am not confident that Hyundai will continue the Azera model. That is too bad. For those folks who want a full size sedan (verses a crossover or SUV) built for comfort on the highway, verses a performance sedan, it is the only one in their "stable".

Take the Sonata v6 Limited for a spin. You will be pleasantly surprised. And............just wait until you see the up and coming Sonata. Absolutely fantastic styling, although the 09 is no slouch.
