Many people do not realise that Hyundai U.S.A. have provided a free online Workshop Manual for all the Hyundai models that are sold in America.
To use this click :-
http://www.hmaservice.com/webtech/default.aspEnter your car`s details & click the `Shop` tab.
It might be an idea to bookmark this to your favourites........& remember you can print off sections (or the whole manual!) as required.
Cheers,
Nick.

O.K. Guys!......over the months to come there will be lots of info. posted on here about basic tuning; which really boils down to engine breathing improvements : often referred to as I.H.E. (intake, headers & exhaust).
Whilst these performance enhancements are easily (but not always inexpensively!) obtained, it is worth rememberlng that, at the same time, THE UPGRADING OF BRAKES & SUSPENSION IS VITALLY IMPORTANT!......I`m sure these necessary improvments will also be covered at length!.
Anyway; once you have fitted your CAI (cold air induction kit), installed that`killer`cat-back stainless steel straight-through exhaust & bolted-on your new headers, most of you will want MORE.....but probably won`t have the means, or knowledge, to go down the Forced Induction path, (meaning turbocharging or supercharging).
If that is the case & you are staying `normally-aspirated`, then this excellent site will fill you in on some of the Stage 2 upgrades possible on the Tiburon`s/Coupe`s.
I.E.
Underdrive Pulleys
Upgraded Clutches
Aluminium Flywheels.... (yes that`s how it should be spelled Yanks!).
Here`s the link :-
My WebpageCheers for now,
Nick.

Hey Guys,
got a 2001 tiburon that sometimes will not shift into drive or reverse from park. (automatic)
Sometimes it works fine, no problems.
It's like you can't push down the button to move the shifter down.
Any ideas?

Hello,
Last week the ABS, engine, Brakes, Airbag lights warning lights all lit up at once. The problem was diagnosed as a faulty alternator. After the alternator was replaced all of the warning lights are now dark except for the airbag light. It is still lit up. I was told there must be an ABS wiring issue in the steering column. I think this is much too coincidental and I think the light just needs to be reset. Does anyone have any insight here, please?
Thanks

How do I confirm that my timing is correct? I replaced the head gasket, made sure the # 1 piston was at top dead center and lined up the hole in the timing belt sproket with the notch on the cylinder head. But the timing seems off. Any help?

Need to replace the rear wheel bearing/hub
I have pinpointed the loud suspension noise to the rear passanger side wheel bearing.
The noise is very loud at certain speeds.
I'm trying to figure out how to remove the bearing or the hub.
Is it possible to replace just the bearing, and use the old hub, or both have to be replaced.
Is the bearing compressed into the hub, meaning it's one unit?
Appreciate any guide or steps on how to remove the unit, and put the new one in.
It's rear disc, and if anyone knows where I can get the parts at a reasonable price.
tnx

well I'm doing an all around brake job on the tiburon that i got real cheap. it needed a few things before it could even be inspected and brakes were definitely a part of that. while doing the driver side front brakes..i noticed this on the axle. I don't know the technical name for it but i know the purpose of it.
Few questions..can it be easily replaced with just taking out a few bolts..etc. and is it even worth replacing..is it something the inspector will fail me for?
If i need to replace is can you please link me to a good site to get one. Thanks so much

OK, I got everything apart, took the head and had it machined, ordered all my gaskets and replacement items and am now ready to reassemble. I have some concerns
1. How do I make sure I have my # 1 piston at top dead center (and which one is # 1)?
2. How do I know when to put my cam at so it matches up with the pistons?
3. If this is off any will it effect the performance or could it damage the valves?
Remember I am a novice at this (virgin if you will). Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,

I have a problem with the battery draining overnight.
I find that even with the key out, the ISC motor is humming. I don't think it should be powered with the key off.
Is the ISC at fault? Is it the MFI control relay?
I get 12 volts measuring to ground at the ISC harness center pin even with the key off.
The diag says check the resistance of the ISC module but does not indicate what I should get. I get 12 ohms from outer to middle pins and about 24 Ohm between the outside pins. Does this tell me anything about the ISC?

I noticed that rpm takes long time to settle at idle. It stays at 1500 rpm for few seconds before finally coming down to about 800-900. Also I noticed that my timing belt has way more free play then it should but the belt itself doesn't look worn or damaged just way too loose. Is replacing timing belt myself recommended and if yes how hard or difficult is it to do it or should I seek mechanic help ...

Hey all.
This is in reference to my '97 Tib FX with 190K. It's still kicking and I want to keep her, but don't want to dump a bunch of cash on a new caliper.
I was doing the simple job of swapping brake pads, and ended up snapping the head off one bolt that holds the caliper guide rod so I could swing out the caliper. Well, I cut a slot in it, heated it up good, used liquid wrench and all that stuff, and I can't get the bolt out. 190K miles and 12 New England winters have fused that sucker in there. I don't want to buy a new caliper, mostly since I can't afford it. Anyone know where I could find just the guide rod/bolt? Or...anyone got an old screwed up caliper, or guide rod and bolt to spare? I'd gladly pay you a few bucks for it. Tried the junkyards - they will only sell me the whole caliper.
Thanks to all in advance!

I've had this issue with the coolant in the resevior emptying. I fill it up than a few day later it's empty, no leaks, although I do smell coolant from time to time, and a strong rubber odor. I'm in the process of replpacing all of the hoses, and
a radiator flush. There was one time that the temp gauge spiked, I turned on the heater (summer time no a/c on) them the gauge went down. That has not happened since then. Any ideas?

I am wondering if there are many Tiburon's running out there with over 100,000 miles and if so what work have you needed to do to them. I am trying to determine if it is going to be worth it to replace the timing belt or not on the car.... I have 100,400 miles on it. I have not had to replace anything on the car so far besides the brakes, tires, oil filter, and air filter. I am getting the rest of the blets replaced on tuesday and am wondering if I should get the timing belt replaced as well. I know the reccommended is 60,000 but so far no trouble. And if the rest of the car is going to start to fall apart then it may not be worth the $600 at this point. Let me know what you think......

Please Help!
I have a 2000 tiburon 2.0..
About a month ago the upper hose began to leak, the fan blower fuse went out, and the car started to over heat. I replaced the thermostat.. the housing until.. fan blower fuse.. and the upper hose.
About a week later the car begun to over heat again.. This time it was leaking a ton of fluid from the radiator, the ac fan went out, and the upper and lower hoses begun to leak. So I replaced the the radiator.. the fan.. tightened the upper hose and replaced the lower hose.
Now when I drive the car still over heats but it takes me driving about 40 or so miles first. When it over heats the hot air from the heater turns cold and then the car gets hot. I have checked the oil thinking that I blew my head gasket or cracked my block but the oil looks perfect. Also their is no smoke coming out of my exhaust.
Also I see no leaks in the heater core or the water pump..
My only idea is that either the water pump, heater core, or thermostat is bad. I have heard that often times the thermostat has to be changed often to find one that actually works.
Please if you have any suggestions let me know..
Thank you

My 01 tiburon has a problem on initial start up that it is really hard to turn. It's like almost locked and turns in a very jump way..for about a minute or two then steering is better. On first start up and sometimes even on a warm start.
I think it's just bad power steering fluid or it's out. But I just want to check here first and see what you guys think. Thanks

Hi,
I have a 99 tib. and have had a tranny rebuild and a used tranny put in.The first was because the fluid
was replaced by dealer(not hyundia)and they used wrong fluid. The used one worked fine for a couple of
weeks then it stopped going into first and overdrive.I can get in sometimes, warm or not and it will shift
fine. Then I can drive it and it will lose it for no apparent reason.I have also been going about 30 and shut off engine
quickly in N and after it stops chiming (boots up)It will shift fine! Its always the same. if no first gear, no o.d.
It has about 140k on the motor so it has plenty life left!
Ths for your time I have enclosed a pic so you can see why I want to keep it

So. I have a problem with my car. It's a 1997 tiburon 1.8L base model. Standard. No cruise control.
I keep blowing the fuse for the brake lights.
I unplugged all the brake lights, hit the brake pedal, and the fuse blew.
I replaced the brake light switch on the brake pedal, and I still blew the fuse.
I AM using the correct rating of fuse.
The question is: What do I do next? Run a new wire from the brake switch to the brake lights?
I need your help, I can't continue driving around with no brake lights!
Thanks

Hi folks,
I'm pretty new to the forum, as I'm working on fixing up my sister's 97 tiburon - has the check engine light on and the airbag light on. The Mechanic had told her that the airbag light was on for "some other reason" and that the airbag would deploy without a problem if needed. I'd like to at least understand what's wrong, if not fix it - at least for my peace of mind.
I found a decent post here on this particular issue:
http://www.hyundai-forums.com/index.php?sh...2&hl=airbagSounds like it could be some sort of seat belt release sensor built into the harness? I'm looking into this to try and find more details, but if anyone has been down this road I'd be all ears.
Thanks guys!

I am looking for a lesser known car to build up to embarrass the local toyota and honda boys, and am thinking about going with the Tiburon. I have always liked the way they looked, but I remember seeing one type in particular that seemed to be a factory package. Its been probably 10 years since I saw it, but it was in a mall with some other new Hyundai models, so I believe it was a factory deal. It had a body kit on it and was called something else, not a Tiburon, but that is what it was based off of. It looked sweet ( I still remember it, after all), but I cannot find the name or pics of it anywhere. Anyone have any idea what I'm talking about?

I plan on putting an aftermarket radiator on my car but it is designed for the 03+ tib. Has anyone already done a swap like this before? I've done some checking and the biggest difference I see is where the top hose connects to the radiator, it is about 2in closer to the driver's side of the engine compartment. I also know the cap is in a different spot but that isn't a big deal. I've done some measuring and the dimensions seem to be the same including the mounting post.

bought car with 127K miles, had rough engine problem. replaced Intake Man + cat convert; new plugs, wires, MAF. Cleaned throttle plate. Had tranny checked. shifts ok. BUT.... It stalls when stopped otherwise idles ok. Good power but at times jerks like it looses gas or vaccum.
went to autozone to check engine codes: P0102, p0748, p1128, and p1613
each is decribed as: Mass airflow circuit low input; liners solenoid electric (tranny?); long term fuel trim - low fuel pressure filter plugged or fuel pump; finally MIL request signal circuit - open or short circuit condition.
Based on the fact that I changed the MAF; plugs, wires and intake man in addition to cleaning the throttle I am inclines to see if the Gas Pump or filter (which are located in the gas tank-?) could be the next logical place to go.
Any ideas? Does this seem reasonable.
P.S. I also have an exhaust pipe leak for which I failed inspection. While I am not sure if this would contribute to a vaccum leak/preassure problem I am looking for confirmation from some of you experts to see if this should also be considered.
I am hoping that the solenoid (p0748 code) does not point to that problem since the tranny guy told me that this will cost me @1,000.00 to fix
any help
Running out of cash
thanks

so as I was leaving for work today the MIL light blinked on, unsure of the problem I had to keep going to work
during my commute I noticed that the car is much louder now, signalling exhaust issues in my mind, but when i stop at a light it feels like the entire car is vibrating pretty roughly, andgettin into 1st gear seems more difficult, but that could just be bad perception
Im completely unsure of the problem, any help would be appreciated, and if there is any more info needed I could try and supply it
The only thing I've done recently is replaed the master cylinder brake pads and rotters

hey guys.. nice forum.. I got my first tiburon,.. 1998 model, 2.0.. needs some work,.. but it should be worth it.. had a blown head gasket, so got it cheap,.. but when I took the head off,.. I found a little oil hole with spring inside of it,.. I accidentally broke the plastic holder,.. and well.. it happens.. looks like some kind of a oil pressure controlling device.. do I need it..?? what does it do..?? can I just take it off..?? there's a metal ball underneath the spring.
secondly,.. I went to buy a head gasket from hyundai delaer, and they sold me a metal one.. is that o.k..?? I suppose that's the original stuff they put on, but does it need any special glue or something..?? it's not like regular head gaskets .. any hints or advises on this..?? what should be the torque on this...?? have done few head gasket jobs before,.. so I'm quite familiar with job itself.. but this metal material is questionable.. anyone with such experiencce,or your expertise advise is requested.. thanks.. jc..

Hello
I am an owner of hyundai tib 1998 with 1.6L engine. I want to put a 2L engine on my car (I know that it'd be quite easier and probably cheaper to sell it and buy a new car with 2L engine but.. this is just my car;) I am kind of used to it. So my question is, would that process go straight forward and what can goes wrong eventually? Also what are the other parts that MUST be changed.
So far I know that the bigger engine would fit with no problem as far as size goes, and engine+ECU swap would go straight forward and it is not really necessary to change the transmission as the difference is almost insignificant. Also since it is a 4-wheel disc brake systems changing the brake system would not be really necessary as well (and having in mind that I am considering putting an EBC sport brake discs & pads). Is my information correct? I really hope to receive the answers I am looking for in this forum as I asked on some other places and most of the people were unconfident about what they say. And one more question - I am planning on putting a 16" rims (currently using the original 15") - would that need changing the brake disc size? Thanks!

I just recently got the engine light on the car come on.
Scanner indicated P1124. ( Fuel trim error-System Lean)
This just happened all of a sudden.
Now the car runs fine. At high speed, no problems, when the car is say idlling,
or stuck in stop and go traffic, the light comes on again.
The rpm needle is at a constant speed, it doesn't go up and down.
When in the car, you can feel that the idling is not smooth, it's slightly rough, very hard to notice.
Out of the rear tailpipe you can hear the engine misfiring or some sort, or rough idling.
Is the p1124 , the actual sensor that's bad, or it could be other sensors that might be bad, and triggering the p1124 code?
and where is the sensor located for the p1124 code?
Some causes listed where:
low fuel pressure
failed fuel pump
Vaccuum leak
Could it be any of those listed above?
I'm not even sure where to start, any ideas?

Ok..I really hope someone can help with this because i need it. I got this car used from someone with intentions to fix it..so I'm not to familiar with foreign cars as this is my first..so bare with me please.
Ok to start off. When I go to start the car..it starts right up..but if I don't give it any gas it will stall right away. If i give it gas for about 15 seconds with a few extra revs it will stay on..but the RPMs will be below 1k and it shakes and feels like it's going to stall. It does drive though once you get past the starting.
Now, I can say that the car has a higher pitched air sound as if air is escaping from somewhere. I personally believe it's coming from the intake manifold and I think it's the gasket there. But I'm not sure. From experience I know that the rough idling can be from a vacuum leak which might explain the noise, problems with intake air which might explain the noise, or a bad MAP sensor.
If a video would help let me know and Ill post one up. But this is really bugging me cuz i know I'm close. So any help would be great. Thanks!

Trying to change the bulbs in the front turn signal housing. They're probably original bulbs - the amber coating is falling off. Remove socket from behind thru the very small opening OR is there another approach?

Is there a "stop limit" on the release shaft arm on the gear box?
Seems that there is and mine is not returning back that far. Clutch is slipping at high rev.
Could the bushings be seized or is the release bearing shot? any ideas?

Hi all,
new to the forum of course but searched around a bit looking for answers, and could not nail anything down. So i decided to just ask. here is the deal with the car.
1997 tiburon 1.8 with automatic tranny
i bought the car for 200 dollars everything is in fantastic shape but the tranny. the problem with the tranny is this. no reverse at all. pulling it into drive will put it in first but it makes horrible grinding noise, will shift to second, but roughly and not at the same point every time. doesn't go to any other gears, the roar from the engine comes from the drives side can't tell if its the wheel bearing or the tranny. when i turn to the left is gets quiet until the pressure is back.
i have seen the video on dismantling the tranny and putting it back together and i am pretty handy around the garage. i have rebuilt a couple of engines level.
A. should i get a kit and tear it apart and fix it myself
B. take it to a shop and let someone else do it (money issue)
C. buy a used tranny-and which models and versions fit the car.
thanks in advance for the help.

Helo, I recently bought a Tiburon, that doesnt start. Dealership looked at it for 4 hours and could not find the problem.
Just wouldn start one day, and still won't.
There is no spark, and when you try tostart fuel pump is not coing on either.
Here is what I do know...
Not fuel pump
Not Battery
Apparently not crank sensor either as dealership swapped that and it didnt fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

im not sure what this part is called but my car is missing it. It covers the trunk space so that you cant see into the trunk while your in the car and it raises with the trunk when u open it. its connected from the back of the passenger seat to the back of the trunk. if u know whay this is called or where u can get one please let me know because without it i can here noise from outside the car coming through the trunk.

I have a 2001 Tiburon 5-speed.
When I shift between 1st and 2nd gear, there is a grinding "ERRRR" noise for a moment. It doesn't happen all the time -- perhaps when the RPMs are a little higher (not HIGH, just higher). When I shift between 1st and 2nd I usually get the noise. If I skip 2nd gear and go to 3rd, or drop down from 3rd to 1st, I don't get the noise. It sounds/feels really bad ... but I mean it successfully changes gears.
Anyone have a guess what my problem is? I assume it'll only get worse.
