Many people do not realise that Hyundai U.S.A. have provided a free online Workshop Manual for all the Hyundai models that are sold in America.
To use this click :-
http://www.hmaservice.com/ Register (Internet Explorer required).....log-on, using the password they email to you, click `Service Information` & enter your car`s details & click the `Shop` tab.
It might be an idea to bookmark this to your favourites........& remember you can print off sections (or the whole manual!) as required.
Cheers,
Nick.

I have a 2001 Accent. And i beleive it is haunted. Atleast the wiring is for that matter. The dash lights have always blinked on and off until the car warmed up, then they would stay on. After replacing the stereo with an aftermarket deck, i lost all dash lights and control stick lights. Also my Left tail light will not turn off, and my right one seems to be blown. I checked the fuse, and the fuse was blown in the right hand light. When i replaced it and turned the lights on, it blew again. It keeps blowing fuses. Could the relay be the issue? I am dumbfounded, and the car isnt worth brining to a mechanics shop.
note: brake/turn signal and hazard lights work fine

my husband is the mechanic.. i am the computer operator (but i do know alot about cars)
We are getting code P0722 - output speed sensor. everyso often the car gets locked into 2/3rd gear and stays there until it releases.
Q1... is this the SAME as the Pulse Generator Sensor??
Q2 .. there is discussion on reprogramming.. my husband thinks his part is ok.... as he did some diagnosis on it... is it as simple as reprogramming??
Q3- the service dealer says these parts go frequently... should we replace the part first... then think about reprogramming??
Q4.. is there a way for US to reprogram vehicle by ourselves..??
We really want to just fix it cheaply until we can find another vehicle to buy..
but want it running ok to possibly sell it..
Any advice would be appreciated from the "experts"
Thank you!

After changing the engine to body ground wire due to it being rusted and the wire was green, before and after the change I was getting a blue spark coming off of my crank pulley and never in the same spot. It would do it after the car has been running for approx. 30 min and when the engine is warm, I've checked all my fuses they are all good. It's a 2002 accent. Any suggestions?

Hi guys.
A year ago I made a little improvement for my car - hood strut. In my country we have quite long winter with snow and mud, so I opened my hood frequently. And I thought that it is very uncomfortable to open hood by one hand when in other hand you take a bottle with nonfreezable fluid. So than I design and make front strut bar with mounting for gas strut. Every day I use this device to be sure that it is work right in different conditions.
Yesterday one guy from Accent club in Russia mount this device to his car and he is happy.
From links below you find photos and video of device working.

Hi. im looking for a bit of technical advice here on why my dash lights aren't working? i read somewhere that they are wire through the parking lights on one side of the car. all fuses and exterior lights work fine. I dont get any power coming into the rheostat. Are there any known issues with the wireing that i should be looking for? also i cant seem to find any online wiring diagrams.
I think this was an intermittent problem when it stared acting up now its perminent. any suggestions would be much appreciated. thank you

I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent 1.5L (Automatic 4 door) which went dead while I was pulling into the parking. The gas light was coming on and off so thought it was out of gas, though there was about 2 gallons of gas. After filling the gas it would not start. I tried to Jump start and then tried to push start too, but it would not.
Took it to Midas they said the timing belt is gone and there may be engine damage too but not sure.
When I got the vehicle it had 89000 miles now it has run about 2000 miles. I tried to call the original dealer from whom the guy had got the car when it was just over 60K. Seems the timing belt was not replaced.
Now the question I have is what is the chance that the engine would have got damaged and is it any good to have the timing belt replaced?

Hi,
I hate to post a problem as only my second post, but here it goes. When I push in the clutch pedal, I get loud grating/creaking noise from inside the engine compartment (not at the firewall). I had my wife sit in the car and pump the pedal, and it sounds like the noise is coming from within the engine somewhere.
The noise is a loud squeek/creak and does it on both the in-stroke of the clutch pedal and on the return.
Are there any suggestions? I did a bit of research on alldatadiy (I have a subscription), but it didn't really help. There are just too many parts I don't recognize.

Hello,
The carpet is pretty much shot on the drivers-side of my 2002 Hyundai Accent. I have no idea what the previous owners were doing (looks like they were driving with ice-skates). They are many reputable companies that sell aftermarket molded carpet, up to the 1999 Hyundai Accent.
My question is ("I have called all around and searched the web") apparently they do not make a molded OEM looking carpet for a 2000 and up Hyundai Accent. Will an aftermarket 1999 molded carpet pan fit my 2002 Hyundai Accent?? Any help, input, or experience with the same issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Hello all, just joined today and i'm hoping i can get some answers here. I have a 2001 Accent that has 182000 miles on it. About 700 miles ago the timing belt went and bent all 4 exhaust valves. I pulled the head, had it repaired, changed the water pump and belt tensioner, and put it back together. The car ran great for about 500 miles and then it stall on my wife one day and would not start back up. We had it towed, and of course, it starts when we get it in the driveway. We bought her another Accent, an 04, so she would have something more reliable and I took over the 01. Drove it around trouble free for about 200 miles then it stalled on me at a stop light. It would crank but not fire. Tried for 5 min, pulled key from ignition, re-inserted and whalla, it started.....off we go. The next week we take it to the park and it won't start when we go to leave. I tried the normal tricks and nothing worked so in desparation i disconnected the negative battery terminal for about 5 min, reconnected, and it fired up. Last Wednesday, it was idling in the driveway and stalled and would not start, let it sit till today and it fired right up. It is not setting a check engine light. The fuel pump is priming the system, but i have not checked the pressure. When it stalls it does not sputter or cough, it acts like you turned the key off. I have recently changed plugs and wires, air filter, upstream O2 sensor, catalytic converter, and a fuel filter. I think whatever the problem is has something to do with re-setting the ECM. It could be that a sensor is bad and an ecm re-set is all it needs to start and run for a bit. I am kinda stymied as to what to do next. The only thing i think that could be related to the cylinder head job would be the cam position sensor, but why isn't it throwing a code? I think i will try to get my hands on a scanner and go from there. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Sam

G'day all,
Not sure if this is the right forum to post in...
Got some starting issue with my 2000 Accent.
I had the same dramas last year too. Engine turns but no spark.
Last year, completely drained the battery after a few days of this drama. Changed the spark leads, the spark plugs, the coil pack, and the battery.
Starter motor was recently changed too with a new one.
I'm in Perth.
Any ideas? I'm at a loss.
Cheers,
Carsten

Well, here I am again, all this car is doing is causing my problems.
Today while I was driving I came to a complete stop and my car turned off.
It started right back up. It did this a couple times today.
I took it right to the near by shucks and ran the code and it came up P1124.
The people there didn't seem to know too much about it.
I am thinking about replacing the Throttle Position Sensor and seeing if that helps, maybe replacing the MAF Sensor too
but I don't know if that's necessary.
Any help would be appreciated..'
Thanks Chad

Hey,
First post. My wifes '02 Accent starting making a 'wheel of fortune' kind of tick sound a week ago. Took it to dealership to diagnose issue. Called me and told me the dfferential pin had sheared and that I need a new transmission. Asked how that would happen and told usually from drag racing, spinning tires etc. I reitirate, wifes 2002 Hyundai Accent. Can you spin the tires on a '02 auto transmission on warm asphalt with new tires?
Don't understand why it needs new transmission if the pin is sheared (read a little, sounds like its a problem when it fires through the differential into the transmission but that hasn't happened). Car still drives. Is there honestly no repair that can be done to just the differential? Any thoughts/answers/opinions are appreciated.

I know this is stupid but i'm really worried that i've done something really stupid.
I bought a car at an auction today & they are some problems, it's a 2001 Accent 1.3i
1 - The Engine Light was on when i purchased it, i looked under the engine and seen that a cable was unplugged from the air box. When i plugged it back in the car seemed to lose all power when i accelerated and the car wouldn't do anything when i pressed the peddle.
2 - I unplugged the cable and the car seems to be working okay again.
3 - then, when at a junction i tried to turn and the car seemed to stutter, it does this in most gears occasionally.
Does anyone know why? Also what is the cable that's unplugged & why was in unplugged & why does it lose all the power when its plugged back in?
I've took 2 pics from the internet & circled with a yellow circle the part of the engine that has been unplugged, i don't know much about cars and any info would be appreciated.!
thanks in advance

I'm having a problems with my wifes 2002 Accent. The car just stopped running one day and wouldn't restart. It turns over but won't start. I first thought the timing belt had broken but I checked and it's fine. I have changed the crankshaft position sensor, spark plugs, spark plug wires, and coils but there is still no spark on #4 cylinder.
Any idea on what this could be would be appreciated.

Hey everyone. New here ,just picked up a 02 GS last week. The car has 100K miles on it and i purchase it for $300. The girl who owned the car decided to donate it after many problems she had with it.Offered her the money and got the car. Last month she paid $900 for new Water Pump , Exhaust , and timing belt. The car has a problem and kills the battery after sitting for a couple of hours. Took it to a repair shop, they said somewhere is a short. 3days they didnt find it. They put a switch on the dash to connect and disconnect the battery. That didnt work either. The mechanic said one thing left to try. The ECU. Found one @ junk yard for $70 and will put it on tomorrow. Any ideas you might have to help find the problem are welcomed. Some other member had a similar problem that might be the door switches.
The shop is has good reputation and been serviced all my vechicles there for year.

Hello all,
I am new to this forum. I have just purchased a 2002 Accent Gsi. All has been good for 2 days then all of a sudden it started to rev on its own. It happens if i'm driving on the highway or going slow. The car just decides to rev to 3k and I have to rather wait and hope it drops down or turn the car off and restart it (restarting it sorts the problem out for a while). Luckly I have a manual so I can put it in neutral till the problem stops, if it was a auto the car would be unsafe to drive.
I have tried to research the problem. I have just replaced the TPS which seems to have made it a little better, but it hasn’t resolved the issue. I really don’t want to have to pay to take it to Hyundai so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Recently I have noticed a few weird sounds from my engine, one is a ticking sound which sounds like a rod bearing might be going bad (not completely sure though). Is that fixable? If so how much would it cost? Also, when I rev the engine and let my foot of the gas (while the revs are falling) it sounds like a metallic ringing almost. Not sure what that would be. I might be able to get a video with the sounds a little later today.

Hello!
I'm glad that I found this forum, I hope I can find some answers to my problems.
I have a 2002 Accent GL 1.5, couple of months ago the CEL came on and I read the P0300 P0302 and P0304 codes (misfire cilinders 2 and 4). This was happening when I was stopped to a red light or in traffic, the iddle sound of the engine seams fine and regulate.
I haven't check to see how they are numbered but I changed all spark plugs and plug wires. Pour a concentrated fuel injector cleaner in the tank and everything was good for a week.
In the meantime each time I tried to fill up the tank the pump will reset itself like the tank is full (this was happening for like 4 months before the CEL to come on). So I have to keep the pump on the lowest debit and even so after 1/3 galons pumped, the gas fills like is backing up. Does enybody have an ideea what can cause this? Can the tank problem and engine misfire be corelated?
I'm planing on digging more this week-end so any sugestion will help.
Thank you!

Hello everybody, I recently purchased a used automatic 2000 Hyundai Accent with 106,xxx miles on it. I purchased from a dealership (big regret now) when I bought the car the check engine light came on, being smart I took it to a near shop to run the codes where it came up as P0422, catalytic converter failure. Well I immediately called the dealership I was buying it from and they said they would fix it because before the final papers where signed over it had to pass emissions, and with this code, it would not.
So I took it to the dealership, dropped it off and went to school, I wish I could have stayed but I am a college student and couldn't afford to miss any classes. I got a call back saying it had passed through emissions and my car was ready to be picked up.
A few hours later I went and signed the rest of the papers officially putting the car in my name. I drove it for about an hour when BAM light comes on again code p0422.
I called the dealership and told them the light came back on and tough luck. (big surprise, POS dealership)
So my question is, since obviously the catalytic converter wasn't replaced how would they make this light go off to pass emission. I read that unplugging the MAF can turn the light off for a little while but it didn't fix the problem only make it unreadable.
Also is this for sure 100% the catalytic converter I also read that replacing the o2 sensors might fix this problem?
Any info is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Chad
(I apologize if this has been covered I have searched and just haven't found the answer I'm looking for)

I've noticed in the last few months that when I press down on the gas (usually in higher gears) and put a little stress on the engine, I an hear these faint metallic pings (maybe ping is too strong a term, it's very subtle). It started out when I'd really be giving the car some gas, but now it occurs when I accelerate even moderately.
It's been doing it less recently with the cooler weather, I noticed it more with the warmer temps.
Could this be the sparks detonating too soon? I say this, since a friend of mine suggested it after I described the sound.
He said I should fuel up with some higher octane and see if that fixes the problem.
Any thoughts on this? How hard is it to diagnose something like this? Is there something I can rent at Autozone to check it?
Thanks.

My wife took the car to some shop and they did an AC diagnostic because her air wasn't blowing cold. They said the condenser had a hole in it and quoted her $800-some to replace the condenser and all the lines. They said it was necessary to replace the lines because dirt/foreign objects could get in there while replacing the condenser. Can anybody comment on whether or not that is true?
I can buy an ebay condenser for about $100 and was thinking of just replacing that and then getting the system properly evac'ed and filled again. If it works, it works, if not...I don't know, but I'm not spending $800 on that car. Between the cracked exhaust manifold, not being able to properly fill the gas tank, the check engine light and now the messed up AC, the repairs might cost more than the resale value of the car. Awesome.

I searched and read through many posts on this subject but Im still having trouble replacing the bulbs. Im replacing the driver side bulb of my headlight. I removed the battery and Im looking down on the power housing where the wires connect to the headlight unit. My question is...
The clips/grips/tabs that you press to remove the housing from the bulb - if I am looking down on it, they are on either side of the black housing, right? Are they the sort of very small arrow-like looking clips? I squeezed these as hard as i could and pulled but nothing moved. Im afraid im going to break or dislodge anything further inside if i pull too hard. Im wondering if im squeezing the wrong tabs because it seems more-difficult-than-it-needs-to-be.
Is there are 'click' when the tabs are fully squeezed....or can I just pull hard enough with worrying about any damage?

Hi Guys,
I've had a quick look through the forums but couldn't find a recent topic on this. Granted I didn't look too extensively but I'm just wondering if you can help.
I've just been given my Dad's old car, a Hyundai Accent 1.3 because he got a new motorbike. Everything runs smoothly (despite a random warning light on the dashboard that after 5 years and 5 MOTs hasn't appeared to have ever gone away) except the windscreen washer jets. They don't spray any fluid despite there being solution in the tank. Is there anyway I can fix that at home by myself, i.e. is it something relatively straight forward (could it be a fuse? I'm pretty bad with cars!) or is it something I need to get someone to look at which is something I'm not too keen on being a poor student? The wipers themselves work but I think the motor on the pump may have gone as there isn't any audible sound when I pull the lever-thing - is this fairly standard of a 10 year old car?
Cheers in advance,
Ben

I did a search, but don't see this anywhere.
My car is currently in the shop having a cv axle shaft replaced. I thought this problem was related, but the shop says there is nothing wrong.
I noticed that the steering wheel has to turn quite a bit further than it used to. It is especially noticable when making a 90 degree turn. I don't recall ever having to turn the wheel so that is it upside down to do that! This car has 121K+ on her.
I have a friend who is a master mechanic and he says this sounds like the "rag joint" or universal joint in the steering. He also says that he can't recall any Hyundai ever having this problem, and he has worked on a lot of cars.
So, anyone know? Ever had to replace this thing, and how much did it cost? I can't imagine it was cheap.

My Accent 02 (92,000 miles, Auto) has been running great since I bought it.
This morning I started it and parked in front of my garage by 11:00AM.
By 12:30, it won't start.
The "oil pressure" and "check" lights are on.
Any advise?
Thanks

I have a 2001 Hyundai Accent 1.5 SOHC MP. My engine started surging and stalling yesterday. I looked around the engine compartment and found the nipple on the surge tank had a small piece of rubber hose on it. There was no other indication that a hose had broken as I had checked every square inch of that motor looing for the other end of the hose. When I put my thumb over the nipple the engine ran like a champ. When I removed my thumb the engine began surging again and stalled with a vapor coming out of the nipple. There is definitely a vacuum on the nipple. I searched high and low for an answer which brought me to these boards. Should this nipple be capped? I know in 2002 they did some tinkering with the surge tanks and there was a recall involved. This was a used car so I am not sure if it was done, or done correctly. I have attached a photo and the nipple is visible on the bottom right side of the photo next to a wiring harness. Thanks for any assistance.

Is the bolt on the crankshaft pulley reverse thread? (2004 Hyundai Accent 1.6L)
The pulley turns clockwise when starting so it would make sense that clockwise = tighter and counterclockwise = looser.

I was having an issue electrically with my car that was draining my battery. I took my car to the garage where they said I was having a draw from my dome light, so they pulled the fuse in order to stop the draw. When they pulled that fuse, they also killed my radio. I have an aftermarket head unit that I installed myself so I rewired the head unit to make sure there wasn't a draw there and the garage says I still have a draw.
I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent L hatchback. Which fuse did they pull? From what I understand my car has two fuse boxes, one under the steering column, and another under the hood.
I can live without my dome light, but I would love to have my radio back. Is there anything I can do? My mechanic says that he believes there is a ground coming from the light, not my radio. If I pull the dome bulb, will that break the circuit stopping the draw? Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks!
