Data Trouble Code Retrieval for Alpha Engines

With the increasing rate of people wanting to know the process of carrying out their own "code checking" precoedures, I have developed an article which will tell you step by step, what to do when trying to eliminate problems, using the on board diagnostic system.

Data Link connectors:

Accent 95-99 - above the right most switch panel
Accent 00-Current - below the lower dash shroud
Getz - below the lower dash shroud

Data Link connector configuration:



Data Trouble Code Retrieval (using M alfunction I ndicator L amp):

1. Ignition switch on (do not start)
2. Ground the L-wire (bridge No. 15 pin and No. 4 pin) in the Data Link Connector for 2.5-7 seconds.
3. If there is no fault, code "4444" will be indicated.
4. Each code is repeated infinitely until the next step is ordered.
5. To order the next code to apper, you are required to ground the L-wire again for 2.5-7seconds, after that the next code follows.
The last output consists of the code for end of "code output" which is "3333". After grounding the L-wire again for 2.5-7 seconds, the diagnostic mode is left.

Remember: There will always be four digits in each code output.

Remember: These are only guidelines to aid you in your diagnosis. They will not provide a definite answer as to what component you should replace, but moreso, identify in which area you are experiencing problems.

Actuation Test

There is also an actuation test which can be carried out in order for you to determine whether your actuators are operating correctly.

Actuator Control Sequence Procedure

1. The L-wire (No. 15 pin) in the data link connector has to be grounded before turning the ignition key on (DO NOT START).
2. Turn the ignition key on (DO NOT START) and then disconnect the grounded wire from pin No. 15, then the actuator activation sequence will begin, starting from the fuel pump relay.

NOTE: Each actuator will be stopped after activating 6 times

3. Once the actuator has activated 6 times, you will then be required to ground the No. 15 pin again to follow on to the next actuator in the sequence, which will be listed below:

4. If the actuator responds normally, code "4444" (No Fault Code) will be indicated by the MIL.

Hi i was driving earlier and went for second gear when the gear stick went all floppy its stuck in 2nd and moves back and forward but not side to side. I have had a breakdown man out to look and he says its the its the forwards and back gear selector cable that has gone. He also says these are main dealer only and very expensive 170pounds to be exact. is this true or can i get one from any motor factors please cheaper.

I have a 1996 hyundai accent gt dohc 5 speed car the check engine light has been on for a while and never really knew why drove it forever and it never missed a beat it started finally running bad had the codes checked and it came up with engine misfire mulitpile misfire random cylinder misfire some thing along those lines, wierdly enough after the codes were checked and cleared it ran like a top like brand new didnt have a sulfer smelling exhaust, and with no changes it ran that well then soon there after maybe 100 miles light came back on and started running like crap.

any help?

i have a 98, hyundai accent 4dr ive been in posession of for about 2 months now
at first it seemed to drive ok maybe for two weeks or so then i noticed the overdrive was on and since i live in the city i figured it should be off unless going up hills so i turned it off. also around the same time i turned off overdrive, i installed a new car stereo myself which worked fine for about a week and then stopped outputting sound..??

my issue however is that roughly around the same time as overdrive coming off and my stereo not making sound, my car started to rev really high when i was driving, it would happen when i was stopped and starting to accel and sometimes it would happen as im comfortably cruising along at 60km (in canada here)
from there things started just getting progressively worse, i dont know anything about cars and this is my first one so i tried turning overdrive back on which at least got rid of the check engine light (temporarily)..
after about 2 weeks of it revving up really high whenever it felt like it, it started to act up really bad in the mornings when i started it up
for the first 10 or so blocks in the morning when im stopped at a stop sign or red light with my foot on the brake, you can see the rpm jump up and then drop repeatedly and you can see the car rock slightly as well as feel it...
this usually went away after about 10-15 blocks of driving the car so i just figured she doesnt like being cold
i was advised by my roommates father who is a mechanic way out of town to get my tranny fluid changed if it doesnt look good so i went to mr.lube and had them change my transmission fluid and my oil which at first seemed to make it worse but now i'm not sure.. immediately after driving out of mr.lube it was really jerky but it seemed to calm down after driving for a while

then last week i was coming home and stopped at a red about 8 blocks from my place and when the light turned green, i started to accel but the car just revved slightly and then dropped down repeatedly which made the car rock back and forth quite violently to the point my passenger thought we were going in reverse.

so i managed to get the car home and it is sitting in my lot the check engine light was on but i got a reader and when i plugged it in and turned the car on the check engine light was not on but there was one code stored, 0442 which i looked up in my manual and it says its the evap emission control system

again, i dont know anything about cars, im a computer tech lol, has anyone encountered this? the manual says the evap emission control system consists of 6 or 7 different parts and i need some kind of hand pump or something to check the parts but i dont know if its better to just bring it in somewhere... and i've never had my car in anywhere so i dont know where to bring it so i dont get fleeced...

any suggestions would be appreciated.. thanks


oh ya i forgot to mention it stalls too.. if someone cuts me off or the light changes and i have to press the brake really hard to stop fast, BAM.. stalled

I only have heat on the highest setting other 3 don't work. So i changed the heater switch and it still doesn't work so i was told it was the resistor.

And to be honest that was a pain in the butt.

So if you know where the blower motor is at please let me know.

I have a '97 Accent ( Excel in Australia ) It has started behaving strangely and hesitating and missing at low revs under load. I have recently a few months ago replaced the spark plugs so it is not that. I did the ecu Data Trouble code thing on it and it gives just one error 4154 - Air/Fuel ratio this could mean anything so I was wondering of anyone had seen a similar thing to this and could give me any suggestions on what might be causing the issue?

I have a 1.5 with a 5 sp. I have a catback and cai. I stripped the interior and was wondering if there are any performance upgrades or should I just do a 2.0 swap? I just put in a new clutch so I wanna keep the tranny. Its a lot quicker with no interior but not no 13 second car

My battery died after leaving the lights and after trying to jump start i had the battery tested and it no longer worked. I just put the new one in and the emergency lights flicker and a red light next to the steering wheel flickers too and you can hear a clicking sound inside the car. After putting in the key lights and radio work fine but the lights wont stop flickering and clicking won't stop and the car won't start.

I have recently brought a second hand 97 Accent Mvi 1.5. I had to have three tryes replaced, initially everything was fine, but now there is a loud clunking noise coming from what appears to be the rear wheel on the passenger’s side. The car has always felt quite bumpy but I thought nothing of it, now with this clunking noise I am worried. Any ideas on this would be very much appreciated.

Do companies custom tail lights for the accent 99?? I've been looking but I didn't find any. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Is it true that the 1G Accents are prone to dashboard cracking. Where I live (South Africa) I have seen a few Accents with cracks and have been told its a factory problem. Does this happen in other parts of the world too.

A crack appeared in my dashboard now. I can't complain though because I got the car for next to nothing. Is there anything I can do to fix this?? Do they do after market Dashboards.

hey I know this is a really simple question but i was thinking of getting some new speakers for my 1998 accent and was wondering about the speaker grills. I tried to just pull them off and they seemed really on there. Just wanted to make sure there were no hidden screws or anything before i just pulled them off as hard as i could. also, anyone know the sizes of the speakers? thanks!

Idling is fine just acceleration the problem...

I have an Hyundai Accent X3 1995 1.5 SOHC Manual Sedan.
I had the hazard lights on for 15mins while engine idle when the hazard lights stopped working along with the turn signals.
No response/noise/anything from the car when hazard switch is pressed or multi-function lever is used.

I've checked and swapped fuses.
I've got a new flasher unit.
All other electrics work fine.

hmaservice.com troubleshooting lists;
Turn signal does not operate and
Hazard warning lamps do not operate
but not both together.

The ones that correspond in both are:
Fusible link (30A) blown (it says 'replace bulb' but surely it means 'replace fuseable link)
Turn signal flasher faulty (maybe my new flasher is also faulty, but it is brand new)
Wiring or ground faulty (could anyone narrow it down to the best path to look for the fault?)

The other culprits are:
Turn signal switch faulty
Hazard switch faulty
Bulb blown and needs replacing.
But.. these are not in both troubleshooting lists.. so I assume they aren't the reason?

I'm begging for suggestions as to what could be wrong.. or ruling out of any of the culprits I've mentioned.

I really hope someone can help me on this question.

Recently bought a '99 Excel (Accent) in Australia, after previously owning an MVi in UK.

Driving this one around, the suspension seems really, really bouncy, almost unsafe at times. I have driven over a short, tall speedbump and the front suspension copes fine, but the rear seems to bounce badly, almost a ripple effect when it hits the bump.

Driving the car, it bounces all over the place on just about any small bump or dip in the road, feels like the suspension is made of rubber....

The Mvi was a solid little thing that handled like it was on rails, like a dream, this is a very different experience. Can anyone suggest what this might be, or if it just a characterisitc of the car I am not aware of? I know the Mvi had different springs and suspension setup to the standard sold Accent, but I have to say this suspension doesn't feel right at all.

Hi guys, hoping someone would be able to tell me where to get replacement trim for my excel? The outside part along the windows that is always the first part to crack and split. And also the part that runs all the way around the door frame? Rubber on the outside and like a metal clip on the inside that holds it on. Mines a really light grey colour, hoping to get black if possible. Anywhere in Aus preferable but willing to look O/S.

The car is a 1995, 1.5 12v GLS AUtomatic.
Sometimes it starts without a hitch. It is always starting imediatly when warm.
Is is usually worst when it has been sitting for a couple of days.
But if i use starting gas it starts up right away.
I have changes spark plugs, spark plug wires, coils, fuel filer, oil, oil filter.
None of this had any effect.

After reading this forum i am thinking maybe it can be the Fuelpump or fuelpump relay?
Any suggestions?

Just an FYI post. My 1998 Accent had the check engine light on which turned out to be the P0442 code for evaporative emission leak. Turned out the leak was due to the top of the filler neck being rusted enough to make it porous causing the vacuum leak. The rusted area was at the top of the neck where there is a plastic piece underneath the neck pipe held by two bolts. Looks like the plastic piece might be there to protect the neck from being struck by rocks being kicked up, not really sure. Over time, road debris built up between the neck pipe and the plastic piece and held the moisture against the pipe causing the rust. When I removed this cover, and cleaned away the build up, I was able to put the tip of a screwdriver right through the neck pipe.

So if you are having an evap system leak code, something you may want to consider checking.

I have a 99 Accent 1.5l manual. Recently it began stalling for no apparent reason. After a few minutes it would start back up. This soon evolved into taking a couple of days to start to now not starting at all. The stalls occurred both while at idle and while driving. Based on reading other similar posts, I replaced the crank position sensor, but it still doesn't start. Prior to any of the stalls the car ran great and once it started back up it ran great as well. Now all it does is just turn over, but does not start. Any help would be appreciated.

My handle is pretty much scrap. I need to change it. Is it possible to remove it without remove the whole panel? All i see is a blue pin holding it to the mecanical on the other side. i try lifting it without succes.

also do you think canadian tire or big floor shop carry car handle remplacement?

hey so i hit the curb a while back when it was snowing and i just realized my wheel is slightly bent. im deciding on buying new wheels and idk what size will fit my car. (1999 hyundai accent hatchback)... the wheels i am looking at are 17x7 with a +40 offset 4x114.3 and im not sure if they fit does anyone know??

ok on my gf 99 accent the alternator shuts off after 5 mins for some reason. so we replaced it 3 times same issue over an over again. then we talked to a ase mechanic an he said that there is a voltage reg in the ecu. so we replaced that for 100 bucks an guess what same FNNN problem. so we traced the wires an they all went to the fuse box an those where all good to. so what else can we try an do.

yes all of the alternators where brand new.

I have a 2 door '97 Accent. I've been searching all over for a new carpet. I have my interior done in red and black and that gray-ish white carpet just doesn't do me any good at car shows.
Everywhere I look, they only have carpets available for the 4 door accent. Mine's a two door.

So my question..Is there much difference between the floor pans in the 4door and 2door? I know a lot of cars, the only difference is that the 4 door is going to be just a little bit longer...If that's the case, then that doesn't bother me, I can cut it.

Does anyone know if gaskets are used for the 2 joins? I have searched far and wide and cant seem to locate any gaskets apart from the manifold gasket.

Also any tips on the replacement apart from getting some WD40 on the bolts a couple of days before?

Hi my engine appears to be overheating, checked the over fill and this was empty. Tried to take the radiator cap off to fill this up but this doesn't come off. I turn it and then try to pull it off but it stays where it is. Didnt want to force it off, so I was just making sure that this cap is actually supposed to come off.

hi i'm new here, i'm stacy. i'm the owner of a 96 hyudai accent, recently i noticed something's wrong, the engine is shuddering badly the car is not even if i have my foot pressed all the way down on the accelerator then it just shut off. my mechanic checked and foud that two of the things on the coil pack was'nt firing, i changed that bt they r still not firing, now he's saying it's an electrical problem, should i see an electrician? i don't wanna spend unneccessary money

Hello, so I just bought a 99 Accent GSi for a Daily Driver. I am changing the Timing belt and the water pump because they are broken. now that I have the Irrelavant info out of the way let me get into my real question. Is there any type of tuning available for the ECU wethere it be an "EVO scan" type thing that they use for Mitsu Evo's or a DSMLink type program that is used in Eclipse/Talon/Laser. I dont want to put an AFC in it because I dont want to spend that much on it, but I would like to lean out the AFR because they are usually pig rich from the factory.

My wife told me out 1999 Accent threw a check engine. When I checked the code it was P0136. I know this is the O2 sensor, but I a not sure if it is the upstream or downstream and where the location of the sensor is under the hood.

The sensor has not been replaced for at least 40k.

Anyone know where I can find the CORRECT wiring diagram for a 99 accent 2 dr hatch. The ones I find have a blu/black wire listed that my car does not actually have. Thanks!

Busque y encontre q la se~al es la q varia de 0 a 5v pero la conecto a la apexi y no hace nada kisiera saber en q cable debo conectar la apexi. Accent 96 plug blanco necesito el diagrama o los cables del flowmeter para poderla conectar bn.

As stated in another topic, i have just aquired an Accent MVI 1998. I have put new wheels on it and wanted to know the recommended clearance between the tyre and the rear shock absorbers. There is about 10mm clearance....enough?

This is more of a general exhaust question but my 98 Accent has developed a leak between the muffler pipe flange and the flange on the connecting pipe. Is there a gasket in there that has given way or do I have to replace both pipes?

Any MVI owners out there? I went to change the fuel filter and had a bit of a suprise, in any tech diagram you find to change the filter on an accent, you have a circle cut out plus a bit extra to get access to the filter underneath the rear seats. Mine only has a completely circular cut out allowing me access ONLY to the fuel pump...cant even SEE or get to the filter. Is it somewhere else on the MVI?

Hi can anyone help? The transmission crunches when down shifting into 3rd Gear. Been into the repair shop twice oil changed, linkages re alinged.

i just got a 99 accent, and its been working great, but when i shift to 2nd (from first) quickly it grinds. if i do it slowly its fine. could it be the way im shifting? or a tranny problem. i basicly put the cluch to the floor and shirt to second around 2500rpm.
for now im just skiping 2nd.

Hello. First post for in an import forum, first import car acctualy. Im not new to cars as I have a 1995 Mustang that is my baby but Ive never had a auto car before. My wife has a 1998 Accent that has about 130,000 miles on it. My problem is that the car shutters pritty bad when I put it into reverse. It shutters even worse when the car is cold. The car doesnt throw any CEL's so I could use any help u can give.

Quick question. My wifes car has failed its MOT for an inefficient drivers side parking brake ( hand brake ). After inspecting the rear brake I could see no problems. Adjusters working fine, plenty of lining left on the shoes.?? I then checked to see how much adjustment was left at the lever end. At this point it seemed clear that the cable had stretched as I could see the equiliser bar was not pulling the cables evenly. I was also getting very near to the end of the adjustment thread. So I decided to purchace not 1 but 2 new cables. I have fitted them both and this is where I have a problem.
The new cables were fitted and every bracket reference points are all fitted correctly. The problem is both cables seem to be to long. I can wined the adjuster up to it's maximum and neither brake applies. Any ideas would be most greatful.

Hi All, well i just got myself a free Accent MVI 1998, needs a little TLC but nice mostly. It needed 4 new tyres, im in france and they cost a fortune here, so for a lil bit more i got some nice new alloys with tyres included on ebay.

Ive thrown a wheel on a car before and i can get my hands dirty doing an oil change and a service but im far from knowledgeable. Today when putting the back wheels on, there is a screw on the back drums which is blocking the wheel from going on. Google has told me this is an adjuster screw? Correct or not?

Only way to get the wheel on would be to take the screw off....

So for those of you who know more than me, most im sure! What is it and what do i do?

I am having trouble finding the hard line (assuming it's a cooling line) that comes off the power steering reservoir, and travels in front of the radiator, and then comes back. I have checked auto zone and JC Whitney with no result. Any body have any suggestions?
