Hi there, we bought a 98 Excel twin cam with 130,000km on it not long ago. It has a noise in the engine that I thought was the hydraulic lifters, (HLA's). I am a trained mechanic looking for some helpful advice before I make a decision as to what to do, (whether to pull the engine apart or buy a 2nd hand motor). The noise is like a rattle or a tapping and it gets faster/slower with engine speed, as a lifter would. It is similar to the unique rattle of a diesel engine. It is there almost immediately upon starting. The interesting part is, it disappears upon acceleration, and is most pronounced upon deceleration, but is constant at idle. Timing belt is brand new, as is the cam chain, and all lifters have been removed and checked. I have noticed the exact same noise from 2 other twin cam Excel's in carparks too, so i know this is a fairly common problem. Using a stethoscope, I have located the noise to the front of the engine, (the timing belt end), and I think it may be coming from the oil pump or relief valve because these sit directly behind the crank pulley - where the sound seems to be loudest. My thoughts are that the oil pump may be worn out where it sits on the crank. Has anyone else experienced this noise yet or had it repaired? Or better still, does anybody know what it is? Has anybody ever had to replace the oil pump on a twin cam? Is the crank prone to damage where the oil pump mounts to it? Any help with this is very much appreciated because I bought this car for my partner and she still doesnt have a reliable car yet!
Thankyou,
Chris

Anyone out there know if oil pressure switch is a problem with 88 excel?1.5L I opened hood and there is oil all over the alternator, and the drivers side of engine is ''soaked'' with oil. I started driving to work the belt was screaching and alternator started cutting out so I turned around and took my Jeep to work. It is cold out and because engine is so dirty with oil I can't see where it is leaking from. It took 1.5Litres of oil to fill her up so I assume its been leaking for a few weeks since I put her on the road. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey all, I am the proud owner of a 1993 Hyundai Excel ( 2 door hatchback ).
I have a few problems that came with the car from the previous owner.
1. Front right turn signal does not work. Fuses are okay, wire is intact, and bulbs were replaced.
2. Body damage to front right signal area.. No idea of how to get fixed, replaced, etc.
3. Gas gage does not work whatsoever. Permanently on E.
4. Check Engine light comes on randomly... no idea how to check my codes.
5. Was considering getting MAACO paint job....ur thoughts please.
Thanks all!

I have a 93 GS sprint, and something seems to b wrong with the electrics. The car had problems with surging but it was an exhast censor. The headlights appear to be dim now, and i've even taken the headlight covers off. The battery has been changed to a sealed lead battery and it always works. The aftermarket sound system (not my work) has been slowly cutting out so i have 1 raspy speaker in the back now. Anyone had similar problems? Know what to do?

I have a 1994 Excel. My check engine light keeps coming on. I did a diagnostic check and the code for the barometric pressure sensor came up. I can't seem to find it in my Haynes manual anywhere. Is there another name for it or can anybody tell me where to find this sensor on my vehicle?

I have just recently bought a 97 GX Excel and i find that even when i am in forth at 3000 revs it labours really bad. So much so it is causing people to look at me which is so embarrasing.
At first i thought it was because i am used to older cars but i have had it about a month now and it still seems to do it, especially when the fuel tank is under half. A friend told me that u just have to drive excels really hard but i wasnt sure if this was true or not.
Also because it is so stock i was wanting to spice it up a little but i cant find a website that shows different mods that can be done. Does anyone know of one?
Thanks heaps.
Kellie
if anyone wants to chat PM me cause i am new here and want to get to know a few people.

Hi everyone. My wife's 1994 Excel occasionally blows out some blue/black smoke when it's started from cold. It does not smoke apart from that and does not do it every time. I don't think it is worn rings as it is intermittent. It seems to run ok ...any ideas?

I recently had my (up until now) very reliable 91 hyundai excel die on me. I took it to a shop and they took a week to fix it-- and end result was it just needed a tuneup. The original problem was that it would start up, but then die out when i gave it any gas. They fixed that fine-- that was a week ago.
I tried to start it up this morning and the engine just turned about 10 times. I let off, gave it a minute, then tried again. After about 10-15 attempts and waiting, it kicks in. I figured it was probably a fuel injector problem , or maybe that water got in the gasoline mix somehow and was causing the gas/air ratio to be offset, so I went to the local gas station and got some "fuel enhancer" (STP, like Heat) to clean it out. I tried mixing it in, but it didn't start for a little bit-- then eventually after 10 times it started up (so i ran it around the block, and on the highway, etc.) It was a very very rough ride-- and when I go to let off the gas at all, it jerks and sputters, sputters but doesn't die, so I pretty much have to have the clutch disengaged or the gas fully on (partially and it goes berserk).
The car place took a week to fix the original problem (tune-up only? dunno), where they replaced all spark plugs, wires, and fuel injector. What is my current problem? I'm out of ideas.
thanks,
-Geoff

Hello folks and may I say this is my first post. I just bought an 88 Excel with only 68000 mlies on it. It is in very good shape starts easy but lacks power. The local garage says the ''front'' cat converter is clogged, and I noticed the rear is no longer there. My ? is'' has anybody here tried to hollow out the front converter on these 1.5 litre motors. It looks like a tough job if I cant get some bolts off. This is not a regular cat converter and of course does not look to easy to remove. Here in Quebec this is not a necessary item since we don't have an emmission test yet so I would like to remove it BUT'' it appears I can not just replace it with any ''old pipe'' because of its odddddd shape. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you Gary

Can anyone help me? Had my 92 excel to numerous mechanics and auto electricians no one knows what the problem is. I've had the distributor cap and leads replaced, injectors and fuel filter cleaned, numerous parts (electrical) replaced sensor on distrib replaced, even to the extent of placing 250 ml of metho into the petrol thinking it was water in the tank!!!!
This problem is only intermintent but has now been going on for 6 days in a row!!
When driving when the car is not excelerating it jumps about as if it is choking. Idle is rough but does not stall.
At my wits end with this one!! Had enough of mechanics saying its this and that costing me a fortune need help desperately.

Hi everybody....just bought a '94 LS auto which runs well apart from a big jolt between gears sometimes. I read that this may be due to a 'missing or defective air exhaust plug' - I have no idea what this means or where to check it. Can anyone help or suggest any other cause please?

I've got a couple problems:
1)The gas gauge on my 1993 Excel does not go any higher than the 3/4 mark, even when full. Recently it's been intermittent: sometimes it won't even work, but most of the time it does.
2)The temp gauge, even when the car is warm, does not go much higher than the white mark near the "C". We've replaced the temperature sensor (Dad calls it a "sender") that sends information to the temp gauge. Sometimes it works (but rarely does the needle hit the "middle" of the gauge.)
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

1991 Excel - starts fine when cold but after driving and it warms up it may or may not start, depends on what mood it's in. Have had coil pack replaced, etc. It turns over but just won't start, let it sit and come back after it cools, then it usually starts. Acts like it's not getting any spark. Any help is appreciated!

I recently bought an 87 Excel POS for $200. The damn thing keeps blowing the Fusable link on the cahrging system. Apparently it did the same for the prevous owner. First, How many amps is it supposed to be rated at? There was a 30 amp in there, I replaced it with a 40 amp. I know that many charging systems are rated at up to 60 amps and the last owner may have put the 30 amp in by mistake. Second, if the 30 amp IS correct, where can I get a wiring schematic so I can trace down the problem? aside from buying one rember that $200.00 Canadian I paid for it.

Hi all. Very new @ this stuff. Trying to remove heater fan moter from RH drive eXcel and have become stuck & run out of light and come in.
I wish to remove the fan motor as there is a knocking sound when the fan is run @ high speed so I guess some sound deadening material has been draw into the drum housing. Does any body have an efficent way of getting the motor out short of setting fire to the car?
