Hi everybody. My 2000 excel has locked brakes and I need to know how to release them. When in neutral with the handbrake off, the rear wheels will not turn.
I am a total novice and this is my first car. I would love a schematic of the brake system if anyone knows a site where such an image is available.
Or just some advice on how to release the brake manually, so I can get the car to a mechanic.

hi, i hope i'm in the right section, i own a 97 excel sprint and i have recently replaced the battery. but i noticed that the radio isn't working anymore, it just comes up with 'CODE'.. i have the code, but theres nothing in the manual on how to enter it. i have a feeling you have to use the tuning arrows, but i can't work out how to get it to that stage. please help..
P.S. the radio i think is a philips DC 283.. if that helps
cheers,

I have a 1991 Hyundia Excel 4 door. Whenever I start the car and try to go the car lags. It takes 3-5 seconds to go. It will also die at stoplights or when the vehicle slows down. I just replaced the fuel pump and filter but the problem remains. I just can't figure this one out

One day my car just started running iradically now. It'll drive down the road just fine, but when i stop at a stoplight and idle, the oil light with come on and tends to cut out like it wants to die. Ever since this has started, it has gotten really hard to start the car. I am not sure what the problem is.

Whenever I accelerate or slow down the steering pulls to either side, sometimes left, sometimes right. Most of the time I have to have a firm grip on the steering wheel to stop it from pulling either side. The pulling gets more pull when harder acceleration or deacceleration.
I have taken it to a workshop, a wheel & tyre place and a suspension specialist and they all think the car needs a wheel alignment. A full four wheel wheel alignment was done but same results and steering problems still exist.
Still can't figure it out so if anyone know a similar problem, what it is & solution?
Thanks.

Hello to all. My name is Rich and I have a 93 excel that has only 24,000 miles and the car as you can guess is like new. Now, Late last year my daughter was drining it when suddenly it began to shake and knock and shut off. It would still start but would shake and knock wildly. Anyway I had it towed to my local mechanic and found that one of the rocker arm shafts had broken. He said it was common with these engines and that they are considered thrugh away motors. So finally He replaced both shafts and the car ran fine although a little noisy from my guess an inproper valve lash adjustment. I say inproper because just a few weeks later the car broke down again the same way as the first and so I decided to have a go at it myself. I took of the valve cover and what do I see, The rocker shaft for the exhaust side is broken in half. I would like to salvage this little car because of the milage and when it is running it is really great on gas and is good and tight just like a new car. when I took the shaft off I di notice that the shaft he replaced on the intake side seems to have been put in backwards because the bolt holes are off center and the valve adjusting screws are not centered on the valve stems. MY question is , Could this idiot have cased this to happen a second time or is this a problem with these motors?.....................Rich

Hey,
I disconnected everything on my deck in my Hyundai Excel 94 x3 last year to put a new stereo in. However, I didn't connect everything back up like the temperature controller on the fans which is getting really dangerous at the moment as I can't defrost my windows (it's becoming winter here).
Does anyone have a diagram or something that outlines all of the connections I foolishly did not connect back up?

Hi all realy would love some help an advice.
Just about to purchase a 1999 Excel sport, I have noticed that in 2nd and 4th gear the gear stick goes way back, close to the hand brake? All gears engage fine clutch is fine just only in these 2 gears the stick seams to go into gear then down toward the hand brake as if it were close to laying down?
Would this be the Gear box cable? If so would it correct the laying back prob? Any idea of price?
I have been told that this is a common prob but also replacing the cable wont fix the laying back of the gear stick and that it must of come of the production line like that?? (im sure that they are run off cables i.e one to pull into and one to push into gear)
Help me please as being told all sorts of things?
Thanks.

Dear Mechanics.
I need to pick some brain, I just had my 1990 Excel deliverd into my drive way this afternoon, got the car for free, in very very good shape. The only problem is that the existing engine is a second used engine that has a bad rod. I will rebuild the engine, but I think the newer 16 valve 4 banger could also work. I need some brain power directions.
Thanks

G'day all!
Im new to the site. hoping some one can help!
Im wanting tighten up the hand brake on my 1999 Twin Cam Hyundai Excel.
Is the adjuster on the hand brake its self or somewhere else? I've heard some people say just to adjust some nuts on the hand brake lever its self and other refered to a technique where the hand brake is applied and the car is reversed which tightens the cable.
Any idea's?
Thanks for the Help!!

Hey Guys!
I am new to your forum so please be gentle with me!
I have just competed a minor service on my 96 Excel 1.5 EFI 5spd and now the car is running rough. I've changed the engine oil and filter, changed air filter, cleaned and re-gapped the spark plugs.
I had an issue with the plug leads in that they were stuck kinda firm and I needed to use long nosed pliers to help pry them off. I did damage one rubber boot on one lead and pulled out a lead from it’s crimp connection that fits onto the spark plug on another. I re-crimped the connector then checked the impedance of all four leads and they are the all the same.
My problem is the car runs rough from standstill til about 2500rpm (I am guessing as I don’t have a tacho). Idles smoothly but runs rough.
I am a competent ‘home mechanic’ but this problem has stumped me!
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers…..Aussie Boy

Ok now that i figured out where the fuel pump is i have another problem. When the car was hit the radiator smashed the shifting linkage connected to the top of the transmission down. it is now jammed into some gear. Idk which. i tried pullin and hittin it back up with a hammer, but the linkage will not pull up. its a 5 speed incase no one has found out. the shifter moves easily forward and backwards but side to side it is jammed. any ideas? maybe my tranny is shot? Thanx Again, Joey

Hi guys my excel is pissing me off now. The leather boot around the manual shifter keeps slipping down and showing the rusty old selector. If anyone else has the manual tranny with the leather (ahem!) gear boot, has anyone been able to fix it? I tried araldite but it melted and my lever is all sticky. Can anyone keep it up?

I jus got a 1990 hyundai excel that someone hit a tree headon. nothin to major jus ruined the radiator and grill and light. well it cranks but will only start with starting fluid. I pulled the inspection cover behind the seat out and seen a plugin with three wires runnin into the top of the gas tank. is this the fuel pump or jus a sending unit? it has 6 volts comin from one wire but the others nothin. or any other ideas. no blown fuses i could find either. I cant hear the fuel pump kick on when the key is turned also. its a four door car not a hatchback. Any suggestions would be grealty appreciated.

Hey guys i have been reading these forums for about a month and i have finally decided to sign up and tell you about the project that my friend and i have been brewing.
I have decided to do an engine swap on my little Excel
Just wondering if it was possible.
I have been doing some research and looking around at other cars
I found a 2002 lancer gli 1.8 at the wreckers for $1800, they said they just want to get rid of it, it is in in perfect condition.
I also rang my local engineer and he said it is very possible and it would still be street legal
The engine mounts are pretty much exactly the same
Please give your thoughts!
THanks

P.s.
I might do a worklog, and i havent found a topic for it so ill just post it in this thread.

Hi,
I have had a 92 excel 4 door for a few years now and up untill yesterday it has been running perfectly.
Very suddenly, it started running very rough, as if it were only running on a couple of cylinders.
while the motor was running, i pulled the spark plug leads off one at a time and noted what happened when i removed each plug lead.
It seems that the leftmost two cylinders are not running. I removed the plugs, and they are both clean and dry with no evidence of fouling.
Just to be safe, i replaced all 4 plugs, ignition leads, cap and rotor but unfortunatly this made no difference.
someone suggested it could be a failed "crank angle sensor" but would this not cause problems on all 4 cylinders ?
what should i look at next ?
thanks,
Michael

I think the springs in my clutch busted, but i'm not sure. We had a heavy rain fall and flooded the streets on my way home i ended up driving through deep water, and the car drove fine and shifted fine, but the next morning the car wouldn't go into gear and when i put it in reverse it seemed to jump without me pushing the gas. A friend told me that the cold water, and hot clutch may have busted the springs? I've had the car for about 2 yrs now and i haven't had a problem with it, the transmission was re-built and some other work also before i bought the car. So i don't think it's the trans. If it's not the clutch what could it be? If anyone can help me with this or confirm that the clutch is the problem i'd be really grateful. Thanks alot everyone!!!! This car means alot to me.

i'm running at 92 excel sprint and Recently the past 3-4 days the CHECK ENGINE light kept on.. i wasn't 2 sure what i might but as i had to get to work and back, i ignored it and this morning the car suddenly cut off and died. i quickly push it onto the side as i was blocking peak morning traffic so after i check under the hood. Everything looks fine. no leaks, everything all full. i tried starting the car and it struggles but it just wont start. and the starting noise sounds more dull than normal.
iv'e had a full serivice, new spark plugs, timing belt, water pump, new radiator hose, fuel filter and all. it has power and petrol is all good.
Has anyone have any ideas??
atm it's stuck a few suburbs away from my house, hopefully no one will knock it off.
Oh btw, i don't know why but the car has to be clutch started.

Like most here I have a 91 Excel GS 1.5l mpfi. So I to have a car that just stopped. I replaced lots of stuff Coil, Dizzy, ECU, Fuel Pump in the past to try to stop an intermittent problem. I have not looked at the fuel pump relay or ecu relay with this new problem of not starting at all. I read about the gold bolted relay for the ECU in an older post here. I will check that ECU relay. So why I am there, where is the Fuel Pump relay and what does it look like. So I can check it also when I am in there for the ECU.
The trouble I am having is no fuel being pumped. I will over the week end check the power to the pump connector by the tank. I took out the fuel tank today and pulled out the pump and checked it by taking it out of the tank and putting 12V to the electrical connections on the pump it's self. It seem to be stronger then the new pump I just bought for the second time in the past 2 years. At least it is spinning faster then the new one I got for it today.
In the past it would just stop and would not restart for my wife. I would come get her as soon as I could, but some times it would be a few hours before I could get to looking at the car. Any way when I would get to the car it would start right up like nothing was wrong. Like most thing if it isn't broke you can't find out what is wrong. Well it is broke now. I have also replaced the Fuel filter, it seemed to help this old problem of just stopping, but it started up the mistery shut down then start up a little later trouble, a few months later.
Anyway the trouble is that no fuel is being pumped. I cracked the fuel line just before the inlet side of the back filter. There is no gas coming out when I crank the car over. So that is why I dropped the tank. I am going to replace the FP and strainer any way. I took the time to drop it so might as well replace the stuff now instead of later.
Any of you have trouble with the fuel pump not working/ getting power. Could this be ECU related. I seen some ones post about the fuse boxes, is there more then 2? 1 by the battery and 1 by the drivers side kick panel.
Any trouble and solutions you have had would help when I am looking for my trouble. Just post what trouble you have had and the fix.
Thanks,
Tom

I just had the manual transmission rebuilt and a new clutch put in my 93 Hyundai Excel 2 months ago. Since then i have had some problems with the clutch or transmission not feeling right and not properly engaging the gears, but i was told by the trannie repair place guy that it will break in and be ok. Now, all of a sudden, i can not press the clutch pedal down. When I press it it doesn't depress and now i can't get it out of gear, therefore i can't start it. Before the clutch pedal stuck permanently (it stuck yesterday but in 3 presses on the pedal it did finally depress, i drove it, and i told him about that), i talked to the repair place guy and he says it sounds like the "hydraulics" and I asked him if that part was replaced with his clutch job and he says it depends on what he wrote on my paperwork. The paperwork says he rebuilt the trannie and replaced the clutch. I want to know if the "hydraulics" are generally replaced with a clutch job? I would have to tow my car there to him and if he doesn't work on it i would have to tow it back home. Or, should i just tow it to the Hyundai dealer if the hydraulics work is not part of what the other shop did? I would like to have it fixed under the 12 month warranty (paid $2,500 for this trannie and clutch job) if it is covered. Otherwise, i would rather not take it to that guy as he sent my trannie to Oregon to be rebuilt by someone else, claiming he could not get the parts, and he charged me for that and it took him 3 weeks to do this whole thingl. I really don't know much about cars. This Hyundai was in great shape before the trannie job. Thanks for any help in advance.

Hey all - brand new to the board and found some great info so far. Here's my problem:
Just swapped a friend for a 93 Excel which had been sitting for a few years. She said it always bogged out on hills when she drove it. I swapped out the fuel filter and took a run up a long hill and sure enough it dies upon acceleration. First thought is catalytic converter - the car runs fine on normal streets but dies on the hills immediately. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Hi All,
I'm trying to replace the driver's side exterior door handle on my 97 excel sprint. I have found that the left side bolt (looking from inside) is not releasing due to the plastic surrounding the thread having broken away, so using a socket wrench the bolt is spinning but so is the threaded hole so it remains fixed. I am having difficulty purchasing the bolt hole in such a way that I can remove the bolt. Any ideas?
If I need to further explain the issue please let me know. Thanks heaps for any help you are able to give.

Hi there,
I have been offered an old Excel which is in good condition for a bargain price. The current owner has had enough of trying to fix a starting problem..
The problem is, if it stands in the sun, it will not start. Now, if it's left until the evening when the weather is not so hot, it will start without fail. The owner has spent alot of money on a new computer and other parts trying to solve the problem, but how now decided to cut his losses and sell the vehicle.
I'm trying to think of what it could be, but the confusing thing is that once the engine has started, it's fine and will drive anywhere no problem, even when the motor warms up to operating temperature it's fine. Why would the daytime outdoor temperature stop the car from starting when, once running the engine gets hot and all runs perfect????
I'd love someone to shed some light on what could be the cause!!!!
Adam

Hi Guys, i drive a 93 Excel, and i broke down today. i believe the timing belt broke, and i need a question answered. i know that 1995 model and above Excels have a non interferance design engine, that is, if the timing belt breaks the engine is not damaged. i was wondering if 94 models and below also have a non interferance engine. any help appreciated, thanks
