First, let me say that my Hyundai is approaching 110,000 miles. It's been good to me for the last 16 years. Just put in a new alternator and battery recently, but now anytime I go beyond say 40 or 50 for a few miles it seems to flood out when I come to a stop. Will turn over, but won't start up right away unless I really rev it up, which has had bad consequences, too. Another side affect from this recent problem is that when it does start, the accelerator pedal seems stuck and the rpms zoom out of control. If I turn off the engine and it sits a while, it runs perfectly, like nothing ever happened. This ever happen to anybody? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Hi everyone,
I have just purchased a X2 Excel to fix up for my son for his first car. One thing I have noticed is an extremely sloppy gear change mechanism inside the car. What can I do to fix this, or is it possible to adapt one out of another make, like mitsubishi??
Thanks
Michael

I thought this could be useful for anyone else replacing speakers.

These are from a 1996 Excel twin cam 3-door. The front speakers have an angled plastic spacer which will let you use speakers with a 50mm mounting depth. Without it there's just 30mm of space.
Cheers, Todd

Hey guys
New to the forum.
We bought the missus a excel, Its a 95 model 2 door. Done 150 thousand kays and its an auto.
What sort of things should I look out for with these cars? Is there anything I should do every so often in the engine e.g Throttle body or anything like that?
Is there any mods I can do to this car to just give it a little bit more power and economy? Just any tips or tricks about these cars.
Thanks people

So I was just driving my car down the freeway and a piece of someone's tire ripped the lower front bumper off of my car! Out of curiosity will the bumpers for the 92-94 models fit on the 1991 body? The reason I ask is because they seem to be easier to find than the 1991 lower front bumper.

I have been problems for some time with my 94 Hyundai Excel
its a single cam 1.5L, 4 door
at times while driving along it will
- lose power
- then when you try to accelerate it struggles and black smoke comes out the exhaust
- or the car will rev up on idle and then the above will occur
i have read through various threads here and all have pointed toward the crank angle sensor
but even i went to the hyundai dealer ship they advised that my car didnt have a seperate crank angle sensor and would have to buy the whole distrbutor
is this the cause/and solution?
i dont want to shell out $800 for something if it doesnt resolve it
and this problem is random and doesnt show it self when needing to so a mechanic
________________________________________________________________________________

second problem is the hydrulic clutch
the pedal feels soft and would not go into gear
i have just drained it and flushed it throughly
but its still soft
the cap on the resivour doesnt have a tread to secure it it looks like it would be held by vacuum and can someone let me know if i have to do anything out of the ordinary to give it a more solid feel?

Son just brought a 97 Excel from a bloke that has had it sitting in a shed for 6years, He said that he started it every few months,
We put a new fuel pump and filter in it and it seamed to run fine, So we drove it over the other side of town (about 6km) to get a blue slip because its been out of rego for so long,
Ran nice no problems no smoke from the exhaust, it passed the blue slip. On the way home it started to stall when you had to stop at the lights.
Today I when over to have another look at it, I took it for a drive it seamed to be shirging while driving along in second and when I had to slow down for a intersection it would die you could start it straight away and it would Idle very rough, enough that you had to keep your foot on the petal to keep the rev's up. Got it home and now it idles rough just sitting in the driveway and I have notice that it blowing black smoke out of the exhaust now.
At first I was thinking that it must have some water in the fuel tank but now I'm thinking there is some bigger problem.
Any Idea's ? and has anyone got a PDF manual they can send me ?

I have an 1999 Hyundai Excel Sport Sprint, and it seems that there is a slight squealing sound from the engine which is getting louder. I've taken it to a few mechanics, but they said that the car is in good condition, but as it gets colder, the sound seems to get louder. It's also making a fair bit of noise from what seems to be the fuel injection, much louder when it starts. It was really loud last night, and it doesn't sound good to me.
Does anyone have any ideas what it could be, or whether it's just old age?
Thanks in advance,
gabs

Hey,
I need to know where all the things on a 1995 excel that needs servicing can be found. Things like the Gearbox plugs (manual transmission) to change the gearbox oil. The oil filter. Aswell as how to change the differential oil in an excel. Also how often do these kind of things need to be done on an excel.

Hi all, just new to this forum, just bought a hyundai excel 1995 1.5. When first starting up the idle seems to low, even when its been run a bit the idle seems low sometimes and cuts out sometimes. When in low gears the car seems stuttery and when on and off of the throttle pedal, the car is very stuttery. Not sure if this is a common problem, any advice on what to do would be very much appreceated.
Oh one more problem, the radia only works on am, and when i change it to fm the seek button only works once then nothing works until i switch it off and on?
Thanks

Hi,
I've recently bought a 1999 Excel. I had to remove the battery to charge it and now that I've put it back in the engine won't turn over when I try to start it.
There are ticking noises from the alarm unit which I'm guessing mean an immobiliser is switched on, or the alarm needs resetting.
I don't have a manual for the alarm but I gather it's the factory standard one. (The sticker on the window says it's a Philips).
If anyone knows how I can get my car started again I'd appreciate some help.
Cheers, Todd

Gidday, my Excel, a great little car by the way, has a fault.... She won't start on occasion, usually at an awkward time! If left for an hour or so or with a bit of "Start Ya **** " sprayed into the air intake she fires right up.
My mechanic mate came up with fault number 1312. Can anyone tell me what that might be or perhaps direct me to someone or a site where I can find out?
Please

I bought a great little car and it ran fantastic for about a month, got great mileage (6lt per 100Km)on the open road. Now all lights and electrics work , it will crank but it will not start.I can not hear the fuel pump working or any other noises from inside the cab. I am wondering is there an easier way to do a diagnostic check other than putting it on a truck and transporting it 90KMs to city.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
OK I purchased a new ECU
Changed Plugs and Leads
Still will not start

My friend and I are trying to swap out the original deck from his 94 Excel with a Sony CDX GT310 deck. I have the manual for the sony deck so I know what wires go where. The problem is I don't know what wires are which, would there be an adapter out there that could be used, and if so where could I find it? Or does anyone know which wires are which coming from the car?

Hi guys,
I have a 1997 Xcel automatic and the left hand driveshaft seal is leaking oil.
I have a new seal from hyundai and I'm going to replace it. The seal on the left hand side is quite inset, about 2 inches. Does any one have any idea on how to remove this deep inset left hand driveshaft seal and how to put the new one in?
Do you need special tools?

i've had some battery issues in the past, due to me accidentally leaving headlights on etc. but letting it sit for a few hours, or jump-start gets it going again.
this time, driving home, i turned left into a driveway, ready to reverse, and everything suddenly died - engine, headlights, dash lights, power steering, brakes. only the handbrake works now. the car refuses to start now, and even dash lights won't even flicker on. it's like i drove though an EMP wave or something heh
any help would be great, as i need to drive to work tomorrow night, and it was booked in to get new brakes fitted in the morning

thanks!

Hey guys, new to this forum.
My sister has a 1996 excel. it has 207 000km on it. pretty sure it was due for a timing belt. The other day she was driving and the engine stopped. Pretty sure timing belt finally went. question is, when a timing belt goes in these engines, does it put the valve through piston and any other major damage? Just want to no whether its worth fixing or just throw car in bin. cheers.

1990 Excel GL fuel injected, automatic, four-door.. etc..
I bought this new in 1990, and about four years ago a problem began cropping up that mechanics either THINK they have solved or just give up:
-It dies at random times. I can be driving full speed or it can be idling at a stop light and it might die.
-Re-starting it is a shot in the dark; sometimes it will restart in a few moments, and sometimes I have to have it towed home or to a shop.
-Turning the ignition key at the times it has died it sounds like the starter motor is spinning fine and there is no gas at all; not a single chug.
-Mechanics have "fixed" it by replacing the various modules in there, including the computer and a new fuel pump. It runs for a while and then
at about the time I'm confident it's ok, it dies; maybe in three minutes from the time it was worked on, maybe in three days of normal
running, maybe in three weeks and maybe in a year of running fine. I am not exagerating; it is totally unpredictable.
-I have tried disconnecting then reconnecting various relays I can see around the engine and one under the cowl to the left a bit near the fuse bank.
I thought that was working, but now it has no effect (I just had it towed home again after fooling with it in a market lot for three hours).
Any thoughts about this? Any help.. please? I love my old car.. bought it new.. I would like to save it, although my wife says, "GET RID OF IT!"
every time this happens.

My 1994 Hyundai Excel starts , idles about 1 minute then dies. It starts every time. I have tried pressing the gas pedal and it dies instantly. What can cause this!

now it is starting to cut out on me while driving as well no matter what speed i am doing , and same thing wait half to an hour and it will start again,

i was told that it was the coil pack and got one and installed it yesterday, BUT it has not worked stopped twice again today ,
is there any thing that might cut the motor if it gets to hot and needs to cool before it will start again or some thing simple i am not thinking of, what would cut a motor that is running and why ???????????? please help

I have a 1999 Excel which has recently had the timing belt replaced @ 100,000 km. Since the service, there is a 'ticking' noice evident from the engine (CAM ??) for a period from when the car is cold to when it warms up. Not long though, but it will go once the car has been driven for a minute or so.
I am told this is normal for an excel once the belt has been replaced, and it mainly due to engine noise that cannot be muffled, as the top engine cover is plastic, and not metal.
Anyone had this problem before, and any suggestions on how it might be fixed, thicker oil maybe ??

I have a 93 Hyundai Excel ( Carby variant). The vehicle recently underwent a piston rings and seal replacement. The vehicle ran well for a month or so but now, I'm experiencing acceleration problem when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. I can experience a minor jerk when shifting gears and it now takes 4000 rpms as compared to the usual 2500 rpms to shift gears. It's a four speed manual. What could be the problem? I'm in Pakistan.

I am replacing both left and right halfshafts. The drivers side RH practically fell out with a minimum of effort. The passenger side LH won't come out of the transaxle. I'm assuming it is held in place in the transaxle by the circlip. There is mention to place a prybar between the transaxle case and the driveshaft inner joint case and move the bar to the left.
I cant find anywhere to get a purchase on the inner joint case. Mine has totally pulled off leaving the cup shaped cover that has the spline on the end that goes into the transaxle.
Can someone in plain english tell me what to do?

Hi all,
i have an 1999 excel glx X3 automatic which has an intermittent gearstick shift problem of getting stuck in park despite pressing (at the same time) the gearstick release button/lever and pressing on the footbrake to release it.
it works sometimes & not others & doesnt depend on whether the car is started cold or warm. it is virtually impossible to consistently replicate.
the hyundai service folks initially thought it was a (temperature sensitive) sensor in the camshaft so they replaced it, but the problem persisted.
next they replaced a solenoid, again the problem occurred.
next they replaced some brakelight wire as it was twisted, again the problem occurred.
i've just had yet another chat to them & they suggest could be a 'wiring' problem somewhere from the footbrake to the gearstick.
frustrating to say the least but has anyone encountered similar problems?

This is a little bit of a NOOB question but my girlfriend drives a Excel X3 98 and lately there is a very loud ticking noise (lifters im guessing) you can hear it when shes driving day-to-day but the other day we had some really hot weather and the ticking noise was really bad I could hear her car from a mile away as she was coming to my house. Wondering what sort of engine oil is recommended. Also if any one else had this sort of experience and what they have done or oil they have used that has made well of this problem. All replyz appreciated. If anyone could help out soon Ill go out and buy the oil today as its needed urgently.

Anyone know where I can find a replacement latch for the rear vent window (passenger side)?
Also looking for the lower front bumper grill.
Thanks,
