Hi

I'm new to the forum. I'm looking at buying the i40 estate SE 1.7 auto diesel having read some reviews a few are concerned with the low fuel consumption compared to the tech-specifications in the book. It is always about how you drive it and you never get mpg it reads in the book. I'm hoping someone can give me an idea what mpg they are getting compared to what it says in the book.

I have always had diesel but this time I'm also wondering whether to get petrol hearing all the rumors that car manufacturers are considering not making diesel cars but that I'm sure is a long way off although more likely cities will start congestion charging diesels.

Look forward to any replies

I have a 2011 1.7 Diesel i40 estate and am getting average 46-50 mpg on the display although I get around 700 miles on a full tank when the display only reads around 620 miles so I think I'm getting a bit more mpg than is displayed.

I am a careful driver and very rarely speed or accelerate hard.

According to the on board Fuel consumption Display on my 2012 VW TDI i average 4.8 to 5 Liters per every 100 kms on Highway driving or 48 MPG Im happy with that.(y) for the guys that own Diesels i highly recommend running a Diesel fuel Injector additive in the fuel once a year like BG 245 because any slight build up of dirt found on the end of the tiny fuel nozles will

affect the spray patern & afect fuel economy & performance pretty drastic. fuel filters are important as well & especially the 'Air Filter' since Diesels in-hale in alot of Air compared to a non Diesel engine. tire pressure make sure there properly inflated to what it calls for on Your vehicle. So again
  • Clean Air Filter is a MUST on Diesels.
  • Clean Injectores - use a Concentrated Fuel Injector Cleaner.
  • Set the proper Tire pressure to your vehicle it calls for.

We've had our 17-Plate i40 automatic since August 2018 and have only covered 6k miles with not many long trips. The average fuel consumption over that time is almost exactly 40 mpg which is still better than our previous car which was a Toyota RAV4 2.2TD. The best we've got out of it on a decent run down to Devon and around that area was 47mpg.

My new i40 is getting 7l/100kms most of the time but has been down to 6.6. It's a petrol 2 litre GDI tourer. I have been driving carefully to see what sort of economy it gets while I run it in.

Now getting up to 42 mpg on a long run in the steep hilly country, driving normally. This car is phenomenal. The handling is great and it's fast enough with a 6 speed auto.

Best of 43 mpg last tank, or 6.6 l/100 kms or 15.3 kms/l. Gauge is very slightly optimistic. This is a 2.0 GDI with 2 adults and 2 dogs and some kit.

My 2l petrol wagon has settled out at 6.8l/100kms which is lower consumption than the official figures. I don't do a lot of town or traffic driving though. The gauge is .2l optimistic I think. The car drives really well and has no trouble overtaking.

Naah.. Diesel & Gas fuel will still be around for a long, long time. whatever rumors you may hear it's not true I hear all the time we are moving into electric ev's I don't see it happening on a large scale anytime soon and I can prove it where is the infastructure for charging stations? I don't see them on every block like I see a Gas station.? and besides who can afford an EV or a Tesla? I sure can't Tesla is actually one of the better ones but it to has a few draw backs I don't want to go into right now.
