Since I've had my i10 I've noticed what I can only describe as an intermittent whirring, servo kind of noise behind the dashboard. It sounds like it whirrs, makes a correction and whirrs again and carries on doing this. I only really notice it when the car's stationary, at traffic lights and such but it is starting to become an annoyance. Just wondered if this is normal or if I should take the car in.
I had the same thing, strange whirring noise particularly heard when the car was idle with the stereo off! It was the headlamp switch. My dealership had others in with the same problem. A replacement switch was still dodgy, so they ultimately did a non-Hyundai approved fix of stiffening the switch so it didn't move the headlamps of its own accord. It's not so stiff though that I can't adjust it myself manually if need be. That seems to have cured the problem.
Hyundai is aware of the problem. I took mine in to the garage and they are fixing it. No hassle, no question ask. I advise you to take your car to Hyundai and get it fixed. The noise comes from the headlamp adjusting itself.

Apparently Hyundai are aware that they have a fault with the headlight adjustment switch on the i10. It is unstable an intermittently raises or lowers the headlights. This hunting by the motor creates the "Zit-zit" noise that you hear. At the moment there is no fix. Hopefully there will be, as the fault as it stands at the moment, probably means the car might not pass an MOT test.
Has anyone ever needed to adjust the headlights beyond the default in normal use? I've had my headlight switch replaced once, but if it goes again I think I'll just ask the dealer to disconnect the motor, as I cannot imagine ever having a heavy enough load in such a tiny car as to need the beam adjusting away from standard.

We use the adjuster especially when on unlit motorways and when loaded. I tend to find the i10's lights are not particularly good when on dip-beam even though I have changed the bulbs. I use the adjuster to give a reasonable distance to the beam without oncoming dazzle. Often the spacing of cars on the opposite carriageway prevents main beam being used yet you have to spot debris, potholes etc at 70mph.
A work mate has just put his Honda into his dealers after a recall from Honda to fix a headlight adjuster problem.
It sounds like the problem is similar to the one which affects the Hyundai i10.
Honda seem to have taken this fault seriously and have acted to put it right so lets hope we all get a recall from Hyundai soon.
I figure this thread may need to be resurrected as its almost a year sinse last post. Has anyone got a satisfactory fix for this? My first MOT is due in 9 months and a headlight adjusting itself just before the examiner tests H/L alignment will certainly cause it to fail. If there's no Hyundai fix then it may be my warranty will expire before they get their finger out!
Hi EssexBoy,
I have had two of the new design switches fitted recently and still have intermittent whirring headlights, so back to the dealer it will go.
I don't think Hyundai have got a 100% sure fix for this problem yet, probably never will as I suspect the i10 model will be replaced in a couple of years time with a completely new model.
Fingers crossed that the third new switch does the trick, watch this space.
Had the same noise so mentioned it on my 2nd service the other day. Told it was the headlight adjuster switch, Hyundai are well aware of the problem but have not been able to satisfactorarily solve it as for the past year as their new switches still had the same problem.
She says that "hopefully" the switches they are putting in now will solve it!
Thanks Seven. I'm a big fan of your attributes. Perhaps Hyundai need to assimilate a bit of GM or Ford technology. I mean its a switch - how hard can it be! The Borg wouldn't stand for it. They'd all be drones by now. I shall go in and ask for one of their latest switches and if it doesn't work threaten them with a visit from a cube.
I've just had my adjuster switch changed for the second time but while driving last night I noticed that the switch lights up in a bright blue, when all my other dash switches light up green. Its really annoying and catches my eye all the time so going to phone garage again on Monday (they've been useless so far!). Does anyone know if the new switches are blue or have I got the wrong switch fitted?
They have put the wrong switch in, Obviously the storeman ordered a post facelift switch which now has a blue theme. Doesn't excuse the fitter for not noticing when it was tested after fitting though.
Thanks Shedloads, thought that might be the case. Doesn't surprise me as any dealings I've had with this garage have been less than satisfying so far. Almost 5 months for them to decide whether a small rust spot on the boot is to be done under warranty. They've lost the photos they took so had to get them to take more and now keep saying the bodyshop hasn't got back to them. I'm tempted to contact Hyundai but not sure I'll get much joy there either.
I also had a scuffing noise which came from the front nearside wheel and they said that no-one could hear anything when they drove it and couldn't find anything wrong, so I decided to take wheel off myself and straight away I noticed a small back-plate behind the brake disc was rubbing. Bent it back slightly and the noise has disappeared. I am no mechanic (sorry technician!) but it seems that there's no real effort to sort anything out under warranty.
Sorry if I've gone off-topic but its been quite frustrating and I do really like my i10.
Hi All,
Update, just had the headlamp adjuster switch changed for an unbelievable fifth time and still the whirring persists.
Phoned the dealer to give the bad news only to be told that they have no idea how to fix the problem as a new switch has worked for every other customer,so basically, sod off and don't bother us again.
Hyundai dealers, don't you just love um.........NOT!!!!!!!!!!
I had today the headlight adjustment switch replacement.....fingers cross if it works?!
