Just got my new elantra and have been using the key fob to alarm the system when parking/leaving the car. Several times the alarm goes off, honking the horn and flashing lights until I turn it off. So far it's completely random. I'm used to the lights flashing once when you arm the system but in my car the lights only flash when you disarm the system. Seems like something is backwards. I thought maybe someone here would have an idea before I take it back to the dealer?
Thanks for any info!

Your Elantra most likely has a mis-adjusted hood switch. I have had a few of these cases. Middle of the night wind blows against car causing the slightest of movement, engaging the switch and sounding it off. You can probably check this yourself to confirm by trying to get your fingers in between the passenger headlamp and hood. Pull up slightly. BEEP BEEP BEEP...

Thanks for the reply. I had to take it back to the dealer anyway and he said it was the misadjusted hood switch.
Thanks again.

Hey, thanks for that information. Mine wasn't arming either and it turns out that my hood is missing a rubber nub that extends to depressed the hood switch. Also, before I left the hyundai dealership, I noticed that a visor was missing and the cable was exposed for the light. Man, that dealer really dropped the ball.

Quick Question:

I bought the '08 Elantra and the side sticker shows it to be $16,050 or so. It also shows keyless entry with alarm. However, when I went to pay they said that the alarm with all the sensors is $600 more. I obviously told them know. I just need to know what alarm does come with it then? They made a 10 second adjustment under the steering column to disable the alarm. I forgot to add - I tried the regular alarm where you get in the vehicle push the lock button on the remote then manually open the door to see if that would work and nothing happens.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for posting this. I had the exact same problem. I was able to adjust the hood switch and save a trip to the dealer.

I would be interested in any replies as well. I just bought an 08 Elantra and was not told it came with an alarm. They sold me an alarm. Then when I later questioned them about it, they said the one they gave me was a passive alarm whereas the one that came with the care was not. I think they scammed me.
I think they just programmed it differently.
Can anyone tell me?

Thumbs up

I am also interested in replies on this. The new elantra we bought does not seem to have a working alarm either. Is there an indicator light to show it is armed? The owners manual is not very informative. Is there another place I can get more technical info?

I picked up my Elantra on Saturday, and the alarm had already gone off at random a few times by yesterday. I also noticed that a few times, the lights did not flash after pressing the lock button on the remote...which would normally indicate an open door, but they were all closed. I googled and found this post. Made an appointment and took the car in this morning. It was the hood switch/sensor that needed to be replaced as others have said.
