I am getting frustrated with a loud banging noise in the front end of my Elantra. It happens when I hit bumps or dips in the road. I have replaced struts, bearings and mounts, sway bar links, control arm bushings and nothing will fix it. The ball joints and tie rods are tight. If anyone has any suggestions that would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Millstone, I am going to change the sway bar bushings next week, that is the only part I haven't changed yet. I fixed the rear noise by changing the shocks to monroe from OEM.
Yes changing to the Monroe OESpectrum rear shocks completely solved my rear noise issue. I did not change the mounts. All the years of fighting with the dealership was solved by 150 dollar shocks installed. The only noise I get in the rear now is when the sway bar links go bad, they seem to need replacing on a yearly basis. My front end is another story, I have replaced almost every part and cannot get the loud clunking to go away, it is so loud you can hear it over the radio.
Well, I changed the front sway bar bushings and noise is still there. Everything is tight, I guess I will just have to live with it and turn the radio up louder.
Unfortunately I've also changed to OESpectrum shocks and struts all around and it did nothing for the rear noise. You may notice that the OESpectrum parts are exactly like the OEM and even bear the OEM numbers; they're probably the exact same part. I was just out there and took the car off the ground a bit and used a big pry bar to pry against the bottom of the tire. You get that familiar thud, thud, thud noise and it's coming from the shock itself when it bottoms out (fully extended). I tightened the top shock mount... there is a spacer in there, like a collar, is everybody else's on the top of the mount against the nut or does anyone have it on the bottom of the mount??
I also noticed my bushings are starting to go in the knuckle a little bit, developing some cracks.
