Just received the notice a few days ago about inspection and rust proofing of both front lower control arms for my daughters 2007 HD elantra.
Seems like similar problem of the previous gen XD model; which both the arms and subframe were replaced on my 2001. Car had over 200k miles, I appreciated the no whining huge repair job.
I have rust proofed the car at least twice ; they look in mint condition and better designed than the XD arms were. There are lots of drainage holes and large rubber plugs you can pull out to properly spray stuff inside. I will bring it just in case I have missed something.
Some of the car companies seem to be on their toes about recall stuff; which is nice to see.
my mom just got one of those letters the other day too...also a 2007 HD. strange...they just said something about 'undercoating certain areas' and did not elaborate. second hand info here of course!
would like to know more...she was told this is not a recall. which makes little sense...why do it on a car out of warranty if not for recall purposes? maybe trying to avoid one who knows.
Don't have the letter in front of me right now. I believe it like a voluntary campaign that is more or less customer service based. It is not a recall.
Some vehicles have maybe started to show more rust than they antisipated. A failed arm isn't likely yet, but rust prooofing now will most likely push part like beyond time frame that car will be on road. Cheaper to address issue now that swap out two expensive parts IMO. Mine are mint, no sign of any rust; and we are rust belt area for sure.
same, i'm not far from you at all. about 1.5hr drive. its just kinda....odd...to have a car company doing something like this instead of waiting until failures start.
If you ignore the warning letter ; it probably reduces liability cost to some extent if there was a failure causing an accident. Car owner has duty to maintain vehicle.
So if the sub frame rusts out and we get the cover up undercoating scam. Will they replace the sub frame? Or do we ignore it and wait til it gets worse?
Hope there is a major lawsuit loved to get my 2 years back and the next 2 more from my loan.
My 2001 élantra subframe was inspected and sprayed ; then 2 years later it was replaced when it got worse. Without any whining or BS.
Friend had a similar age GM crapfire with major subframe issue; no help from manufacturer, low mileage car ended up in bone yard.
I think the hd 2007+ model is built better. My rust looks more like cosmetic surface rust this time around. Still haven't had it inspected yet.
