We bought two Getz 2005 1.6 Litre vehicles, one four door manualand the other a three door automatic. Everything is wonderful and in a month I have travelled nearly 8,000km (manual vehicle).

The only thing with which we are dissatisfied is the fact that the key design for the central locking system has the switch on the side of the key head. Simply putting the key in a pocket which has a few coins, or having a key ring with other keys will unlock the car. This has happened many times with both cars.

The range of the signal of the key allows the car to unlock accidently from quite a long distance. I have been shopping in a super market, in a doctors surgery, in my studio and the key has been activated without me in sight of the vehicle.

My wife, in the automatic, has had the car unlock with the key merely sitting on her hand.

We often have to carry expensive equipment (computers, musical instruments etc) and this failure of security is really not good. A letter to Hyundai suggested that, as my complaints were the only ones they have had it couldnot be a key design fault.

I am interested if anyone has a similar problem.

there have been similar problems with some remote fobs, while the remote is in ones pocket the buttons keep getting pressed and the battery in the remote wears out rapidly. the only solution l have found is to find a small hard plastic sleeve that will fit over the key fob to protect the buttons, you will need to have a hunt around to find something suitable. l know this may sound a bit of a 'bodge' but it does work

Thanks Montego,
I have thought of your solution before and intend to do so. However, I feel that Hyundai should accept that there is a problem and remake the keys. I wonder at the liability if a can is open when it is assumed that it is locked and something valuable is stolen.

It is good that someone else has the same problem. If I can collect enough Getz owners with this problem perhaps they will recognise that it is a problem and attempt to solve it.

I am also interested in the distance one can travel after the petrol empty light comes on. I managed 130Kms a few days ago when I found myself without the necessary plastic cards on a mountain fishing trip....... sadly no fish but I made it home!

Thanks Lits,
When we bought the Getz the salesman explained that the car would re lock itself if it was unintentionally unlocked and that appears to work, but this does not explain the fact that the cars we have are sometimes unlocked when we return to the car. We always check that the cars are locked when we leave them.

I have just run a test and the vehicle did lock itself three times when unlocked. Don't you just love car problems that seem to solve themselves when you complain!

I still have concerns that I will rely on it l;ocking itself but then when it is important the system will not work.

Regarding the button being on the edge of the key, it really is a pain. However I seem to have solved the problem on mine by taking the key apart and cutting a mm or so off the end of the switch. Now it doesn't protrude but is still easily accessible.

My problem with 06 Sonata is just the opposite. My car will unpredictably lock itself, even with the keys left in the ignition. Hyundai has some kind of an internal electronic problem rather than a fobe problem

the stock models from the philippines do not have central locking mechanisms. you can add $$$ when buying it and they will put it in for you. the alarm/central locking thing they put in comes from a different provider but its one best suited for the getz. its a cobra brand, and it works great on mine. it locks itself if i forget within a few mins and it unlocks once i turn off the engine.

in anycase, when you change your central locking mechanism or want to tweak what you already have, they should have given you a manual which comes with a circuit diagram. if they didnt...maybe go back to your distributor and let them know the problem? i think their obliged to help within their warranty statement.

or you can bring it to an alarm specialist to tweak the settings....hope this helps.

Best Regards,
L

I bought my Getz 1.3 CDX in UK in Nov 04. I too had trouble with the sensitivity of the key. Invariably the car "unlocked" itself as I left it parked. On one occasion, I shut the driver's door with the key lying on the seat and the car locked as I walked away. Fortunately, my wife was still sitting in the car and I was able to get to the key. I reported it to the dealer and to Hyundai UK. Hyundai UK insisted that there were no other reported cases of this problem. Therefor it was not a design fault. The dealer funded an additional two"manual" keys which do not operate the immobiliser. Not a satisfactory solution.

I would be interested in how many other owners have this "isolated" problem
