Getz 1.5 CRTD Intermittant non start

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum today, my name is Richard and we have recently bought a bright red Getz 1.5 GSi CRTD with the 4 cylinder engine, lovely car apart from a problem that has developed a week ago. Hoping someone may be able to help please?

The car will intermittantly not start, the engine turns over fine but it will not fire, it can be hot or cold although not (so far) the first start of the day. Eventually it will go and when it does it fires up instantly.

Have plugged a code reader in and not a single fault stored, no warning lights on dash. I have checked and cleaned the contacts on the main relay, tried the spare key, checked for any loose wires etc but still no good. Has anyone come across this before?

Any help would be gratefully received. Thank you. Richard.

Hello Richard. Welcome to the forum.

Have you read the thread on immobiliser problem : http://www.hyundai-forums.com/getz-forum/115289-immobilizer-fault.html

It says the immob light flashes 5 times when the engine wont start. Did you happen to notice if yours is behaving normally when you engine doesn't fire up?

Another possible cause is a faulty crankshaft position sensor. This is the sensor that tells the engine computer that the engine is cranking. If there is no signal from the sensor the engine computer wont turn on the fuel pump or operate the fuel injectors. Often it can fail and doesn't log a code.

When it doesn't start, it would be an idea to have someone crank the engine over while you touch the fuel pump relay on the engine fusebox to see if you can feel/hear the relay operating once the engine starts to crank. The fuel pump relay is the one right behind the fuses to the outside edge of the fusebox. It'll probably be marked on the fusebox lid which one it is.

Regards.

Scott.

Hi Scott

Thank you for the detailed reply. I'm 90% certain that the immobiliser light doesn't flash when the car doesn't start. Tried it tonight probably 20 times to try to reproduce it again to check the light, took it out on the road too and typically it started every time! I know it will fail again so will keep trying over the next few days. Had a look at the immobiliser thread so will have a good look at the connector at the weekend, it would be nice if I can reproduce it by wiggling the wires.

Already thought of the crankshaft sensor but I have a code reader, this shows no faults but it will also display certain information including engine speed. Had the code reader plugged on a couple of days ago when it wouldn't start and when it was cranking over but not firing it would read an engine speed of 200-230rpm. I think it gets this from the crankshaft sensor so I believe it to be working?

Car doesn't have a fuel pump relay in the fuse box, there's one marked on the diagram on the lid but it's not there. I've looked at the main relay which is the black one in the fuse box, the contacts in the relay were slightly burnt so cleaned them up, left the top off the relay to see what it did when it wouldn't start but the relay seemed to operate ok. I've ordered a new relay anyway but they are on back order. I'll try and attach a picture of the fuse box.

Thanks again, I'll update this thread when it fails again and I confirm what the immobiliser light does.

Cheers

Richard

Hello again.

I had a look at my fusebox today too. And your right about the fuel pump relay. Mine doesn't have one either. It's shown on the engine wiring diagram as well as the "main" relay. They must hide it somewhere else on the diesel models.

Some additional info regarding the immobilizer warning light :
I had some free time today so had a little mess about just to confirm how the warning light works. I've never had a starting problem on my car (touch wood) so I've never paid much attention to the lmmob light. The light on my 4 cyl diesel seems to work different from the one on the other thread.

With a valid ignition key inserted in the ring antenna, my immob light comes on with the other ignition lights. It goes out during crank before the engine actually fires up.

With no key or an invalid key (a key from another Getz), my immob light doesn't come on at all. The engine cranks but obviously doesn't fire up without a valid key in the antenna.

Can you confirm your diesel does the same?

Scottie.

PS...connected my scope to the data link wire between the immob unit and engine PCM just to see what different signals are passed with valid, invalid & no key

Valid key : http://tinyurl.com/py4cncp
No key : http://tinyurl.com/net78vm
Invalid key : http://tinyurl.com/kbquxno
High sample rate capture : http://tinyurl.com/o8d42e5

Interesting to note that having no key or an invalid key in the ring antenna has the same effect on the warning light but the data sent to the engine ECM is totally different. I suppose it would have to be, mind you, to generate a different trouble code for diagnosing the fault. I never though to connect my laptop to see what codes were logged in each case. I'll do that tomorrow. I'll need to erase all the codes anyway.

Hi Scott, thanks again for a detailed reply. Finally got the car to fail again today. When the car will not start the immobiliser light does not come on at all, the same as on your car. I took off the steering column trims and found the connector from the ring antenna. I can reproduce the fault exactly by disconnecting this connector, no immobiliser light on and car will not start so now I'm pretty confident this is where the fault is. I've cut out the connector and soldered the wires together to eliminate any connector problems. All seems ok, only time will tell if it doesn't reoccur!

Thanks again for your help!

Cheers

Richard
