Hyundai Getz (manual) 1.4 screeching noise on slow stops

Hi, the brake shoe on the left rear wheel (only the left rear!) of my Hyundai Getz (2007 model) makes a terrible screeching noise when the car is cold (and also when the weather is cold but the car has been warmed up), only when making a slow stop, and only when at slow speed, when the front/foot brake or handbrake is applied. It definitely seems as if cold weather has something to do with it, but how can this affect the brake shoes?

There's NO noise on reverse (using either foot/front brake or handbrake).

One mechanic has said the problem is with the leading shoe. I have tried cleaning it out (ie the metal dust which accumulates after a while) - still no difference!
The brake shoes themselves have been checked - all fine, and so is the drum!
The handbrake has been adjusted. Still the problem persists!!

When I increase speed up to about 15 or 20 km/h and then come to a sudden stop, there's absolutely NO SOUND!

Only on short, slow stops, for example when leaving a parking bay and coming to a stop 5 metres further. Or pulling out of my driving in the morning - that surely wakes up the neighbours!!

Is there anyone out there who knows why this is happening, and why only on the left side? Is it something to do with the brake compensator? Does the Getz have such a thing?

How does the brake fluid work within a car's system? Could it be something to do with the brake fluid and not the shoes?

Thanks -
