I have a manual gearbox which the gearbox oil should be have been in for life, at 15k miles we drained the oil and refilled with the correct specs oil (fully synthetic) and added an additive. It's still in there and seems okay.
I would say, use the best oil (eg. fully synthetic) that you can get/afford in accordance with the manual's/manufacturer's specifications.
Automatic trans axle: ATF SP-III, Diamond ATF SP-III, SK ATF SP-III...
Fluid capacity 6.1 (automatic)
