Water ingress around passenger light/tailgate

Hello All,

Sorry its going to be a long one.....

The car is a UK spec 2005 Getz

My wife has been complaining to me about a condensation problem in her Getz for a long time now. The other day I got in for the 1st time in a long time and immediately noticed that the car smelt. I looked around and saw white mold spotted around the floor/Rear seat passenger/LH side of the car. Further investigation found the LH hand rear seat squab to be soaked and the spare wheel well to be half full of water. I have cleared up the water and cleaned the mold out.

I stripped out the LH boot lining out as I noticed water was coming in here. I found that the car leaks water ONLY when the tailgate is closed and the water is poured into the channel at the top of the tailgate. Water is coming in to the car at the hole in which the petrol cap release cable goes. I cannot access upwards to see as the panels are very close together.

Things I have observed. In no particular order...

The tail light grommets seem to be OK
The sealing grommet around the cable to the light is not leaking.
The light seems to be looser than the RH side
The panel gap between the LH side of the tailgate and the body is smaller than the RH side.
I will post some pics tomorrow.

Questions
Has anyone seen this problem before?
Has anyone got access to the Service bulletins? If so is there anything in them about light clusters leaking or panel issues around the tailgate?
Can I find out if the car has been repaired by Hyundai?

I am really stumped on this one so ANY help would be gratefully received

The Genesis coupes are bad about leaking behind the tail light from the trunk channel drain. It runs right over the top of the taillight.

Over time there is a build up of organic matter between the taillight and the body. This leads to water into the taillight and trunk.

First take the taillight out and see if this is the problem. If so some tape on foam weather stripping that goes fully around the taillight might work.

What I found to work well is to put some tape over the area between the trunk metal body and plastic piece over the top of the taillight.

My fix

Thank you for the reply. The car is still leaking I think it is letting water in around the top of the tailgate aperture just in front of the LH tailgate hinge. Removing the seal/weatherstrip finds 3 panels joining here. Putting sealant in the weather strip seems to hvae made the problem worse.....
