CRTD Scrape/Rumble/Tap/Rattle From Engine

Hello All,

I have a 2006 Getz CRTD. It is currently on 154k, and runs very well. Starts perfectly everytime. Hot/Cold/Warm

I have heard a little noise from the engine, so I am posting to see if it is a common/known problem (save me changing loads of bits to find out it is something simple and well documented!)

I know it is difficult to describe a noise but I'll do my best...

When the car is idling, every couple of seconds you hear a little (scrape/scratch/rattle) sound. Sounds like a Tap, but isn't as harsh as a Tap. The noise lasts 1/2 second, if that. (Reminds me of the noise a hamster makes in its wheel)

When driving, the noise gets slightly louder when accelerating up to 2000-2500rpm - Other than this slight increase in noise, it doesn't seem to relate to the engine speed/load (if that makes sense)

When cruising, you can hear the noise quietly every couple/few seconds.

It seems to be coming from the Aux belt side of the engine, but I can't pinpoint where it is.

The car is 2000 miles overdue an oil change (which is being done soon as) - I have read that these engines do make noises when the oil is a bit old.
Or possibly the Waterpump failing - How often does the waterpump require changing? I can't find any info regarding this.

Thanks in advance, if you need any more info, please ask away!

Hi again,
I'd just thought I'd update.
I changed the oil yesterday, with hydralic lifter treatment (just in case the noise was a sticky lifter) but no change.
Car is much better for the oil change, loads more power and torque!

I'm leaning towards possibly camchain guides wearing as they are plastic on these. Unless anyone else has any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any ideas/experience. Any is welcome.

my first advice is stop wasting money on 'hydraulic lifter treatment', engine shampoos, injector cleaner or whatever they want to call that snake oil. these additives (with VERY few exception) do no good and there is no evidence that they won't damage your engine in the long run. its a great scam market, 'your engine is dirty! put this in!' did it actually do anything? how are you to know? in almost all cases the answer is no.

anyhow onto your problem. its coming up at idle, so get your head under the hood with the car at idle. get a cheap mechanic's stethoscope and start poking around, you should be able to find the source of the noise pretty quickly with that.

give the belts a good inspection too, it could be as simple as a loose belt causing this. i can pretty much guarantee that it isn't the water pump. look for anything unusual in the pullies, angle of one off indicating a failing bearing. i dobut it would be bad enough to see, but no harm in looking. you can listen to the individual bearings with that stethoscope by the way ;)

if you have a timing chain then yes a tensioner or guide wearing out is very possible.

Thanks for the reply.
I have had another poke around, and I listened over the oil cap with the engine running and the noise does seem to be coming from in there, so I'm hedging my bets on a sticking lifter, or worn lobe, or worn chain guides.
I'm doing a long trip in it tomorrow, so i'll see how it goes!

It hasn't got any worse in my ownership, and I've already done a fair few miles in it!
