So i have a 2006 getz sx manual, whenever i chutch into reverse it doesnt seem to catch it and theres a grinding sound
Should i change the gearbox ?
Would that be ok to put an automatic sxi getz gearbox on it ?
Make sure the clutch pedal is depressed all the way. With the clutch fully depressed, give the accelerator pedal a firm quick rev. This is called "spinning the synchros". Then try the gear shift for reverse. If the transmission is still working, this action can often help with shifting in older transmissions. "Spinning the synchros" sometimes works for other gears in your transmission, too.
Manual & automatic transmissions often have differing gear ratios & changing from one to the other can cause large performance changes in your vehicle.
Generally, the heavier weight, fewer gears & power transfer inefficiencies in automatic trannies cause worse performance. However, a number of small car models, even fairly recent ones, were not given high enough manual transmission gearing, & those cars are very buzzy on high speed freeways. Occasionally, an automatic transmission exchange for a manual one, can give lower rpms at high speeds & the buzziness goes down....... good if you're on the highway a lot. Buying a newer, higher geared & bigger engined car would probably be your best bet, tho.
Best to try "spinning the synchos", tho. I spun the synchos for 45,000 miles in my old Plymouth Champ, without having any repairs.
I think you'd probably be better off getting another car rather than try changing from a manual to an auto, there are a heap of things that would have to replaced/altered for this to work....aside from the fact it would cost you heaps in labour costs etc etc etc! don't take my word for it, go and see a mechanic for some cheap advice unless your pretty handy with the tools, but just by the questions I don't think so. See a mechanic, much safer!
