Sudden conundrum of problems (assumed to be all electrical)

Hello,

I joined these forums and few days after I bought a 2nd hand 2005 Hyundai Getz. 1.5L petrol, 3 door with 5 speed manual.

It has been a good car during the time that I have owned it up until some weird problems that it is showing now.

While stopped giving way at a roundabout somebody rear ended my Getz and did some minor damage to the car. His third party insurance helped fix the car at a panel shop which took 5to6 working days.

I got the car back on a few days ago on Thursday evening. The panel repairs are great but, I now have an odd series of problems that I didn't have before I handed the car into the workshop and didn't have use of it for just over one week.

The car still drives well and has the lights+indicators still working so, it is completely legal from the outside but, it has sudden new issues internally that I list below.

--

: The lock/unlock feature on the key-immobilizer doesn't work so, I have to unlock the doors/boot manually each time. - This is the first thing that I noticed was wrong with the car.

: The central locking is not working. Unlocking/locking the main door has no effect on the other. So, I have to treat it like an older car and remember to check that the doors and the boot are unlocked.

: Sometimes when I turn the car on (idling at a standstill) the speedo needle raises to 100km/h + for a couple of seconds before it quickly settles down but to 0kmph. This doesn't effect the correct readings on the mileage/trip meter.

: When driving the car at night with the headlights on, the dashboard is not lighting up so it is difficult to see the speedo cluster.

: I don't know much about the radio but, it doesn't seem to want to turn on so I can input the given Hyundai security code to make it work again.

: If I set the internal clock to the correct time - when I go to use the car later that clock has not remembered the correct time and is back to 12:00

: The internal light that is supposed to turn on when I open the door no longer works. - The light in the boot also isn't turning on with the boot open.

These are all problems that I have since taking the car back.

I took the car back to the panel beaters to ask them about it. They say that it has nothing to do with them as they were only working on fixing damage at the back of the car. - They say that they needed to disconnect the battery so that they could do some of the work.

I am slightly surprised that they didn't take a note that the car I handed to them with central locking working nicely with the key unlock button no longer worked after they had finished their work and reconnected the battery.

--

Since they claim 0 responsibility I have tried to sort this out myself by doing some basics.

: All of the fuses in the engine bay and under the dashboard are fine.
: I can't tell exactly how old the battery is but, it looks fine and the car still cold starts very easily so I'm assuming that its health is fine.
: Tried to use my second set of keys. This still doesn't unlock the car.

--

Mechanically this car is still driving great. It's at >96,000kms by the way, and I'm getting the cam belt on it replaced at 100K.

Would anybody have any suggestions for what I should consider to solve the sudden list of problems that the car has?

Thanks for your help.

Hi campbell2, it sounds like you might have to try a computer re-set to sort out these gremlins, just remove the negative cable from the battery for 10 minutes or so then re-connect and cross your fingers.
Seems odd that it's all happened AFTER the body repairs.... maybe they didn't disconnect the battery after all ! I would be thinking about taking this to a "Small Claims" tribunal if you have that in WA, good luck :)

Thanks iana, that is a good idea I will do that now.

Minor update: Called the accident makers insurance company and they agree that they will cover it if indeed it can be reported that the faults are due to the repairs. Otherwise it will be at my expense to fix it.

When they assess it (accident maker is with RAC insurance) I guess that it is in their best interests to find out that all of these faults are just a coincidence and I should pay. - Still this is better than nothing.

Going to disconnect the battery for a while now.

Cheers
