Getz won't start in neutral, have to put it in to gear!?

Hey everyone...

I initially thought this was something to do with the immobilizer but I think i am wrong...

My car is a manual 2004 Hyundai Getz and it won't start in neutral. I have to put it in to a gear and then it starts fine. It doesn't make any noise or anything when I try and start it in neutral.

So that's been going on for a while but then tonight I discovered if I put the clutch in around 3/4 of the way to the floor then the car would start in neutral........

Once or twice recently the car has had trouble starting at all... sort of like the battery was low, took ages to turn over and then would suddenly start after a bit of revving...

Any suggestions or has anyone else had similar issues>?!?!?

Thanks x

Do you get a click when starting in Neutral? If so sounds like your starter motor. I imagine with the clutch depressed you are putting less stress on the flywheel to turn. Also by putting it in gear you may be turning the starter slightly so it contacts with the copper contacts. If the copper contacts are worn you will get this issue. Your battery might be on its way out too. Get it tested to eliminate this.

the two issues are not connected, you HAVE to push the clutch pedal down to start the car....this is normal.

If the engine takes a while to fire up while the starter is operating this could be down to all sorts of issues, probably the first thing to check is the spark plugs, change them if they have not been changed for a while

Am I missing something? Since when did you have to engage the clutch on a 2004 Getz to start it? If its in gear then yes but if its in neutral it should start without the clutch depressed. Mine does, plus every other car I have owned bar new stuff like my girlfriends 09 Mini.

You do not state your location (its helpful if you can state it in your profile)..........Depends on the region the vehicle is sold in, in many countries this is a legal requirement (as a safety feature) for example Australia and the U.S. but as you said not so in the U.K.

Hiya, no clicking at all.

It wont start in neutral if I do not have clutch down or if I have it all the way dowb

It will only start if I push the clutch slightly down to a very certain point.

This does not happen on any other gear ...I can push the clutch to any point and it will start

Thanks

Yep, the clutch must be "in" (depressed) for the engine to start. In other words you can't stick the gear shift into neutral and start it by reaching in the window and turning the key.
edit:
Just went and tested on car... would only "turn over" when clutch was at least 75% depressed, otherwise "no turning over" at all !
