sump plug torque

Hi I recently changed the oil on my Getz. I put in 5w30 synthetic oil and a new sump plug washer that I got from a Hyundai dealer. I tightened up the sump plug to what I thought was tight but noted an oil leak at the plug. The manual advises that the torgue for tightening the plug should be between 25-33 ib.ft. I then tightened the plug using my torque wrench to 25 ib.ft. I noticed that there was still a oil leak at the plug so tightened it to 30 ib.ft. There was still a slight leak so tightened the plug to the maximum advised in the manual to 33 ib.ft. The plug seems tight but there is still a slight leak. Any advice on what I should do now as I am worried about stripping the thread. Thanks. Laurence

I torque mine to 25 foot pounds also and never have any leaks. Sometimes the old sealing washer gets stuck on the pan. Check that you don't have 2 washers on the plug. That's all I can think would create a leak. Sounds like you did a proper job. good luck. cheers.

Hyundai not been problem for oil leak at drain plug, but make sure to have new ring, inspect seal surfaces on pan and drain plug for damage, and only 1 ring on the plug, seen them come in with 2, no leak there either... torque 32 lb-ft.

Hi thanks for your help. I drained the oil and checked as advised. There was only one washer on the plug and nothing stuck to the pan. I refilled with oil and put on a new washer and torqued to 25 ib.ft but there was still a slight leak so I tightened again to 32 il.ft. There was still a leak. I drained again and put on a "dowty" or bonded washer which is made up of rubber on the inside and metal on the outside. 14mm size. I set the torque wrench to 25 ib.ft but the plug appeared tight before I reached this torque so I stopped. The leak appears to have stopped. On inspecting both crush washers both had the same indentation so I presume that this must be an unevenness on the pan and this was where the oil was leaking. Hopefully that is it fixed now.
