Gates Cam/Timing Belt Kits - For Getz?

Hi All,:)

More Cam-Belt kit questions/comments:eek::D

I have been viewing/looking at the Workshop manual (finally got hold of one:)) for the Cam-Belt change procedure and it appears that the Water Pump is not driven by the Cam-Belt, which means that in theory the Water Pump doesn't need changing at the same time. However at 10 years plus old I think that it would be prudent to change the Water Pump at the same time (along with Tensioner and Idlers), please read on....

When looking at the Water Pump change procedure Hyundai confuse the issue a little, in that they mention removing the Timing Belt Idler (to get at the Water Pump etc.) and in the reassembly procedure they then state to replace the Timing Belt and Idler....therefore to replace a Water Pump, it does involve extra labour in and around the Cam Belt housing/area....

Whilst a Water Pump failure shouldn't damage the Cylinder Head/other parts etc. etc. (as the Water Pump isn't 'driven' by the Cam/Timing-Belt), whilst working in the area - and draining down the Coolant - replacing the Water Pump seems to be a wise precaution to me:).

I have priced up the HMUK parts and they seem fairly priced and I am also aware that Gates have a good reputation for price and performance of their Cam Belt kits (Belt, Idler, Tensioner) etc etc. and thus more cost effective. They also manufacture OEM parts. I dont, however, want 'cheap and cheeful' as such, when it comes to Timing/Cam Belts, is folly to my mind, yet I am also working to a budget (isnt everyone these days?) and if Gates are as good/better than Hyundai (which Gates state that they are the same as/better than OEM parts), then I may be better off purchasing Gates' parts...

I am also aware - though - that some manufacturers who supply OEM and after-market parts don't always make the two to the same (high) standards as the OEM parts (ie Tyres, Brake Pads etc. etc.), even if they are for the same vehicle/make/model as their OEM originals (and look identical!:rolleyes:).

Has anyone here fitted a Gates Cam-Belt and Water Pump (or BGA Water Pump) to their Hyundai and/or Getz?
Or any other make besides Hyundai parts?

Ideally, as this is now a low mileage car, I would like the Water Pump to last another 10 years, along with the Idler and Tensioner and just replace all of the belts next time/in five years time (if I havnt won the Lottery and upgraded to a newer Hyundai - or Ferrari:D) as I did at the year 5 service (as the Water Pump and Idler/Tensioner were still new and low miles....B)).

Any thoughts or comments gratefully received;):)

Regards,

Being the skinflint ******* that I am, I don't recommend changing the water pump until it's needed. Usually, if you took the time to change the antifreeze every two years, the water pump will last as long as the rest of the motor and never need changing, as the antifreeze is actually the lubricant and needs changing to retain the lubricating properties. In addition, when a water pump fails, it usually gives you a lot of warning before it actually stops pumping water... i.e it dribbles and/or makes noise for a very long time. The last time I change a water pump was on a Volvo and it had 15 years and 200k miles. It was dribbling a little water around the seal. It's actually a very simple device and will continue pumping water even whilst leaking. My last timing belt I bought was 99 cents from eBay and it was a left over from a Tiburon some guy sold, so he was getting rid of parts. It was made by Gates and worked fine. Hard for me to imagine any timing belt made these days which will not last to at least the recommended amount of miles.

Hi, Thanks for your reply.:)B)

I have, as you have hinted at, replaced the coolant every two years, a little over due this year by a few weeks and I will change such when the Cam-belt is fitted - I am considering a well known manufacturer's long life (5 year) coolant.:)

I, by and large, agree with your comments on water-pumps and I have only every had to remove/clean one up - the gasket was leaking - in the past 35 years. That was in the 'good old days' though, when all metal/cast parts were used and water-pumps weren't driven by cam-belts.

The unknown for me is, are there any plastic parts in the Getz water-pump? I have seen Toyota - metal - castings fail recently too when Toyota chose to outsource manufacture further afield than Japan and were hoodwinked by such......so I guess for me a Getz water-pump is a complete unknown. In more recent times - and since the advent of the recession - I am much less trusting in the quality of items, even relative to price etc., as manufacturers dont always play with a straight bat these days (as with the Toyota casting - which was on a brand new vehicle - yet Toyota fought tooth and nail to defend their 'honour' rather than owning up!).

This time around - and possible the next cam-belt change - I will probably have someone else do it/help me, having a water-pump changed now is a better option - for another 5-10 years use (also in terms of labour costs if it did go wrong eg in year 12).

I suppose that the $64million question is - how long do Getz water-pumps normally last (time and mileage)?

I am glad to hear that the Gates belt was okay for you, as they have come highly recommended, I have the feeling though that you were very lucky though, because all such belts are susceptible to 'aging' (rubber/synthetic rubber compounds) whether or not it has been used/contaminated.:)

Cam-belts do vary in quality and sadly too, there are lots of 'fake' copy parts coming in from abroad and the boxing/packaging is so clever it has even fooled some of the industry experts....brake parts and a major motor-factors spring to mind as they were duped (even K&N has been copied/ripped off):rolleyes:;)

All I want is low risk and value for moneyB)B);):)

Thanks again.

I have just spent 35 mins typing up help and advice on our Cambelt/WP change and the system didnt Post it then threw me out!

Anyway suffice to say that we fitted Gates Belts, Idler and Tensioner (Cam-Belt, Tensioner and Idler look to be the same as the OEM parts/the same part numbers too - yet without the HMC logo and all are made in Korea, so one must presume that Gates have a factory there). The three other Gates belts are made in the EU.

The Water-Pump was replaced using a Blueprint (Japanese) WP, this required an extra spacer/washer on one of the mounts (PM me for more details if required).

Comma X-Stream Red 5 year anti-freeze was also used.

Gates products come with 2 yr (20k miles) warranty and Blueprint 3yr (30k miles) warranty, all are better than HMUK's 1 year warranty, yet all a little slippery/stingy as the Cam-Belt has to last 5 years (50k miles) in use. Suffice to say that many manufacturers use Gates (as OEM parts) as do many recognised car clubs.

Buyer beware though, there used to be only 5-6 manufacturers of Cam (Timing) Belts, yet now there seems to be some really cheap ones on EBay et al - one pays their money and makes their choice!

If anyone needs to know more - then please PM me and I will do my best to help.

Kind regards
