UK MOT Changes for 2012

I'm sure plenty of people know this already but, if your MOT is due in January but you can get it done in December, it may save you some hassle as additional checks are being added from 1st Jan 2012.

Your current MOT cert will show you the earliest date you can present your car for test - if you want to preserve the anniversary date.

absolutely right, but remember these new rules to not come into effect until the 1st. April 2012. for the first three months of the year any defect found on an MOT test that come under the new legislation will only be an advisory and not a reason for failure
take particular note for those of you that have fitted aftermarket HID's unless you have a levelling and auto. wash system fitted to the headlights you are going to have major problems

Do you happen to know of the reasoning behind theses apparently stricter rules?

But it should be noted that all advisories are logged on the DVLA database and available to all prospective buyers in the future.

In essence, to apply the same rules in annual testing as the car had to meet when new.
