Hatchback Wing Bows Up In Heat?

Maybe this is just a Desert Rat problem, but I recently got my GT over Memorial day weekend. Just a couple days after I noticed the hatchback wasn't opening properly. To my surprise, it was bowed up and rubbing the roof! Pressing down allowed my to open it without issue though. I immediately knew this was due to it being around 105 or something and sitting in direct sunlight.

I immediately took it in to the dealership to repair, and they replaced it completely after ordering and painting it.

A week later, in 110 degree temps, to my dismay it did it again! I am wondering if this is a general design flaw due to extreme heat and sun exposure. I notice as soon as I begin driving it, it works fine. Most likely the surface temp gets lower as the wind and random shade hit it.

I know I have heard of many convenience features in other cars that use external sensors act up out here and wonder if its just another downfall of living in the blast furnace.

I too live in phoenix, and while I don't park outside for long periods of time regularly(i'm one of those lucky Arizonians that has a garage at home and a parking garage at work!), whenever I do, I have never had the problem you are describing now. I don't understand what you mean by bowed, and rubbing. What part of the hatchback is doing this, at what part of it opening does it rub? etc.

The wing/spoiler at the top of the 5th door, where the brake light sits. it bows up, just a bit, toward the front of it where the gap between the hatchback door and the roof meet. I will try to get a picture. It's odd then. Maybe the dealership didn;t identify the proper issue then. I just hate this will be the second time taking it in for the same issue and I haven't even had it a month. I have been working with the guys at ChapmanScottsdale and their service dept has a pretty good rep.

Does it bow up right in the center, like mine does?

My dealership will fix it as I am A still inside the first 30 days I bought it and B I have the bumper to bumper (they suckered me in to it during the closing but it wasn't a terrible amount extra as they took off an extra grand off the total, but its covered).

I emailed my service guy and am hoping to hear back. If not I will just take it in, considering it wasn't properly fixed the first time.

I am really wondering if this is a design flaw as a whole or I just have something that needs proper attention. Thankfully I don't use it much, for now.

Yeah mine was from the same Dealership that sold it to the original owner. I was almost wondering if it may have something to do with the adhesive used as well. Hard to say as I don;t know enough about these babies yet, but I will let you all know what I find out. Glad to see it's just not something with my car.

I mean, could be. Like out of 11,000 people that buy a product, 1 or 2 are faulty kind of thing. But still...

Are you sure it's the spoiler or the actual frame of the 5th door that's doing the bowing? There's two places IMO that could cause this. A) the door to car frame connection or B) The spoiler to door connection. There are screws that mount the metal 5th door to the frame of the car (4 screws total that mount to two separate hinges), then 7 "mounting nuts" (As the manual states) that mount the spoiler to the door.

When it comes to temperature swings for parts like that you have two options:
1) pick a time of day (early in the morning, or in the middle of the summer phx day heat), and just loosen then tighten the mounting screws all at the same time. (thus allowing the parts to settle in to a new fixed location)
2) Loosen some of the screws. If it's the door to frame connection, you could just permanently leave a little loose the screws to one of the hinges and not the other. Or, if it's the spoiler to door connection, there's really no need for 7 mounting points, you could probably loosen all of them but the middle and one each of the left/right side.

I guess there's a third option too, if you notice the parts don't play much, you might need to bore out a slightly bigger hole for screws/bolts to mount into.
