Switchback turnsignals installed !

This forum has everything but one thing: a tutorial on how to install switchbacks on our gt, so I took the liberty of doing it myself and showing it off. This is all done on a 2013 GT.

First picture shows the passenger side. I used a couple quick splices and spliced the positive side of the resistor to the red wire and the negative to the middle black wire.

Second picture is the driver side harness. The postive wire from the resistor is spliced to the top right blue wire with orange stripe and the negative is spliced to the middle black wire.

Process was simple enough after i knew which wires that I needed to splice, but I'm very jappy with how these turned out.

I would have only connected the signal wire at the harness and grounded the other side of the resistor to a ground under the hood somewhere. Makes for a cleaner install. Also personal preference, but I absolutely hate those T splice connectors. I would tap into the wire the old fashion way, buy pulling back the insulation and threading the new wire into the existing wire then taping everything back up. This makes for a much cleaner install and is less bulky. But good on you for getting it working. The switchback LED bulbs are on my to do list, but right now I have much bigger fish to fry. I have an LED switchback eyeline strip to install in my headlights and to do so I need to open the lights right up, during the install I will be also painting the chrome white to match the car and install special lens on my projectors. I will post my results once done, before that comes my new Compass Nav system :)

I considered wiring it all up with seperate wire but the t-splice is faster. As for the resistors, I just 3M them to the underside of the metal piece where the headlights connect to the car so they are out of sight and not touching anything important.

I used an Amazon gift card that I had laying around and ordered a set of Morimoto 1157 switchback LEDs for the front. I did not order the resistors yet, I wanted to make sure I am ok with the color and brightness first. I need the white to be a close match for my i30 DRL otherwise it will be a deal beaker.

I went with these Morimotos mainly because of how they will look, they look so different than your typical LED bulb.

The Morimotos are superior to others. They are the ones I will most likely purchase. Also Morimoto resistors are very very good. They do not get nearly as hot as the gold style ones which tend to melt plastic under your hood if not installed properly, and for the price it is a no brainer.

Part of me wanted to get the VLED v3 Tritons but I couldnt justify a $150 blinker purchase to the wife haha!!

The Morimoto seemed to be the second highest reviewed as an LED bulb, yet the highest rated for a drop in bulb so to speak..

I plan on ordering the Morimoto or VLED resistors to when I am ready for that to happen. The VLED look really nice because they are so low profile plus they are black.

Okay.. so i have an issue with my leds...

First off, keep in mind that I dont have auto headlights.

Whenever I turn on my parking lights my turnsignal LEDs will come on but then when I turn on my headlights my turnsignal bulbs go out... What could be the problem ?

It's the Headlight. I spliced directly into the wiring harness that connects to the headlight.

I had previously looked into the VLEDs but decided that they will not work with our car due to the adapter that the light housing uses to hold the bulb in place, it is not the typical 2357 holder that most cars use. Because of the way that the VLEDS are designed they would not fit unless you did some hacking, and rigging.

For that reason the Morimotos are probably next on my list. Only thing is they are not as bright as some other due to the fact that they use 3 LED for white, and 3 for amber, so when the white is on it is not as bright as they could be. The all amber or all white should be brighter, but then no switchback.

What I was really considering since I will be opening my headlights anyway is installing this turn signal module used by shark racing. I already have the LED eyeline that I will be installing soon.

I installed my Morimoto 1157 switchback bulbs just now and here are the pics. I took a daytime picture only because I do not have a camera that takes decent pics in the dark. As for the pictures...

A Close up of the bulb installed.

The turn signal light is a very bright orange, and does not match the factory turn signal mirror LEDs at all, the mirrors are much more dim and a lighter shade of orange. Which is funny because I used to think the led mirrors were really bright when I incandescent turn signals, keep in mind I was using the lower powered 1157 incandescent vs the factory 2357 (I think)

And the parking switchback white is a very very bright white, and to answer the million dollar question I had, no the white does not match the i30 fog light DRL, these bulbs are somewhat whiter than the DRL. Not by alot but it is noticeable in person, but it will be close enough for my taste.

As for my thoughts on them, I really cant say much as I have not seen them at night yet, but if their night time performance is as good as their daytime performance I am sure I will be sold. If that happens I will be ordering replacements for my rear turn signals and and reverse bulbs.

@cbzdel how did they look at night? I think the Morimoto are a great option for LED bulbs. Also I wanted to mention about the colour not matching perfect, with LEDs it is hard to get them to match. Even if they both claim to be the same Kelvin colour rating you can see a difference in day light. Normally the difference is much harder to tell at night. Even 5000K and 6000K look the very close from a distance at night.

The other thing I wanted to know is when you have the turn signal on does the white running light turn off until the blinking stops or does it go white, amber, white, amer,.....?

I am very impressed by these bulbs, I will be ordering rear turn on Friday when I get paid for sure!

At night the amber turn signal matches the turn signal mirror much better and the white parking matches the i30 fog light much better and the differences that were noticeable in the day where virtually gone, as you mentioned could happen.

When the bulbs are lit with the white parking leds and then you hit a turn signal, the white parking bulb shuts off and the amber signal starts flashing. When you shut off the turn signal it actually it takes almost a full second for the white parking bulb to switch back on which is strange but no big deal as it seems common for most switch back bulbs after watching a couple videos on YouTube.

The more I see these switchaback bulbs, the more I am starting to question them. At first I really liked the look, but now I am starting to think that it looks just more odd than anything else. Probably because no American car has ever been designed to have a white LED there, I think the amber LED turn signal looks amazing but the white am getting more and more on the fence about.

I am going back and forth in my head between 3 options.
Get the i30 headlights because it will have the clear reflector and that would help the white bulb look better.
Get the amber LED turn signals.
Do nothing and leave it as is.

I will probably decide here in the next week or so, tonight I am installing my rear 1156 signals and resistors.

Keep us posted. I thought about getting the full Amber morimoto bulbs. After what you said I think I may.

I installed my rear Morimoto 1156 amber bulbs this morning. I have to be honest, I am not very impressed by them. Up front they were clearly brighter than my original bulbs, but in the back the incandescent were clearly brighter. Which is odd becasue the front switchback only have 3 amber LEDs and these rear 1156 bulbs have 6 amber LEDs so I really had expected them to be twice as bright, but maybe they used a LED that has a 50% brightness due to having double the number of them? Reguardless for a $40 bulb I am not impressed with the rear bulbs at all. But due to spending $40 on them I will be keeping them or my will be angry haha

So the front wire hardness has 3 solid black wires and each of them are working as a ground, and the rear wire harness has 2 solid black wires and both of those work as a ground. What in the world is going on inside our bulb housings? Does each lamp have its own dedicated ground rather than just a single ground?

I have all my resistors spliced into the turn signal wires but I am not sure which ground to use....

#25 ·
Look at my pics on the beginning of this forum. I used the middle blsck wire to ground both turn signsl bulbs.

#26 ·
You don't have to use the wires to ground. You can just ground to the frame. It makes for a cleaner install.

That is the way I will be doing it.

#28 ·
I might order the same. thanks for the update. I am going to have the DRL eyelines with switchback so the bulbs would probably be overdoing it.
