This question is for high mileage commuters. How many miles (or km) do you have on your Elantra GT? Have you had any problems with your car? Any helpful maintenance tips? I have a new 2015 Elantra GT 2.0l engine, automatic transmission. I love it! Runs great, nice and quiet, so far it's perfect!

2013 Owned for 10 months. Purchased off dealer as a head office demo with 13000 km now I have 43000 km.

2013 bought back in 2012 when they first came out (Dealership tells me I was the first GT owner from their dealership).

Bought with < 100 kms on it (most I put on test driving); just a bit over 138,000 kms now.

no issues - following the maintanance schedules very rigorously; have changed the shocks in the back and will change the struts soon. Brakes also going in to be changed (hopefully pads only and not the rotors too).

Have both winter and all-season tires. Expect next year to change tires.

Under warranty changes: radio, windshield, and an ignition switch.

Sorry - have to add - the following repairs need to be done:

1) Front Driver side - just above the wheel well; paint chip
2) Driver Door - paint scratch
3) Rear Driver side door - dinged by another car's door opening
4) Rear Driver Taillight - repair hairline crack in taillight from changing bulb (those things are tough to get out!)

"Lil Red" was two years old yesterday and has 49,000 miles on her. Those terrible Nexen tires are less than half worn. She is ready for her first Cabin filter and a new set of wiper blades all around. Aside from routine maintenance she hasn't been home to visit family for anything and that suits me fine. In fact it suits me to the point that I got her a big brother. A 2015 Sonata Sport 2.0T so she can take a vacation while the "Phantom" shoulders the load for awhile.

2013 w/ manual trans. - purchased October 2013 with 5 miles. The car now has 29900. I usually do 22k per year, but the car was in the shop for 21 days for a minor accident in Jan. 2014. Only problems to date are a TPMS issue I'm still dealing with (it goes back in tomorow) and the steering column is being replaced (bad bearing)

Owned 16 months now, put 24k miles on it so far. Great car, i love the design and features.

Had a few relatively super minor problems quickly fixed by the dealer.

Got new tires at 16k miles because of a giant nail.
Replaced the headlight bulbs with H9's, and raised the beam.
Regular oil changes on the 7,500 mile interval.

I wash the exterior monthly, and clay/wax every 6 months, plus I vacuum regularly and use 303 on the interior. I still get comments from people who think my car is brand new.

not really high mileage...

50,500 kms (31,500 miles) - 29 months ownership (Oct 2012)
  1. so far, corrected rear alignment (by shimming - not replacement of axle) as uneven tire wear was evident
  2. rattle in exhaust heat shield clamped down.

the rest is self inflicted or daily driving cosmetic issues
no rattles or squeaks.

I am watching my hatch door shocks.... they seem to be weakening and don't open the hatch fully without pushing it up. They do hold it up okay. Honestly, I don't remember if they pushed it up all the way before. But knocked my head on the edge once recently... ouch

Owned my 2013 GT GLS since July 2012 (33 months ownership)

Current km: 46500 km

Issues:

*Peeling steering wheel - replaced by dealer last year.
*The radio (over 33 months) has had the minor issue (not powering up...weird gibberish text)....but it's not regular..and I haven't bothered taking it in. I haven't seen the problem for about 9 months.
*Crappy accessory....all weather floor mat...my shoe dug a hole in the driver's side one last year (after only 2 years)....never buy again this accessory.
*Rear Disc Brake - 1 Caliper bolt rusted...cleaned it off and reinstalled (with Silicone Paste).

Maintenance:

*Oil and filter changes at 5000 km intervals, hyundai oem filter...Quaker State Full Synthetic 5W20 (yes,..overkill, I know..but I plan on driving this into the ground...hopefully at least 350,000 km++)
*MT Transmission fluid changed 2X, once at 20000 km and 2nd time at 40000 km..the last time with Redline MT-85!)
*Coolant DRAINED once from radiator @ 40000 km and refilled with hyundai coolant
*Brakes 'serviced' Eric-the-Car-Guy style - 2X already...1X at 20000km, 1X at 40000km.
*Plan on Bleeding the brakes at 48,000 km and changing the brake fluid.
*2X Cabin Filters changed
*1X Air filter changed.

WARPDRIV - hatch door shocks. I have the same problem! Although I can't remember if the door went all the way to the top by itself?!?!! I've hit my head on that **** door almost 8-10 X already!!! What a pain!!!! Are the shocks busted? Or bad design!?

I've had Elaina for 10 months, and we just rolled to 20,000 miles on Monday. It's been all routine maintenance so far and I am happy with the car. I did have to get two new tires (Michelin Premeirs) due to a bubble from Staten Island's lovely potholes. Also changed the MT fluid at 10,000 for Redline MT-85. I plan to keep this car for a long time, so gotta take care of it. My dealer likes to recommend services I don't need, but I just politely decline and follow the schedule in the manual - sort of, because I go every 5,000 instead of every 7,500.

I'm definitely going to put Michelin's on mine once they are due.

We bought both our 2013 GT's used 1 year ago.

1. Redline manual transmission oil
2. OEM filter & synthetic oil changes every 6K (QuickValve helps)
3. KYB rear shocks (Ivory only)
4. auto dim, compas Homelink mirror added
5. Vogue tires and General Altimax winters

Ebony 60,800km's and has been good but a rattle has developed so it will go in shortly for a checkup. Guessing sway bar bushing or link loose. Will be bringing to mechanic for service #4 in coming weeks.

Ivory 47,600km's had radio replaced as well as clutch bearing. Also going for a service#4 next week.

I love these cars.

I used Redline on my 06 Tiburon to solve a synchro issue I had with 3rd gear. I was skeptical at first but other Tib owners praised this stuff for fixing minor issue in the tranny so I took the dive and did it. It made an amazing difference. Not only did it fix the synchro problem but it made the shifting all around smoother and more precise if that makes any sense.

I was just wondering have you noticed any major advantages of adding it to your GT??

original owner from july 2012 when they first came out...i have just shy of 69,000 miles on it. No real problems to speak of other than crappy gas milage.

Breaks are due to be replaced any time now, and have been noisy since i first bought the car. I am hoping new pads and rotors eliminates that problem.

36K, no issues

I've had mine 24 months now, just over 36K miles. Absolutely no issues (knock wood), have changed the tires with Michelin Premiers, and the wiper blades. Lots of oil changes, strictly synthetic, along with the typical air & cabin filters.

I bought the KYB's, but haven't installed them yet as the ride isn't TOO bad.

It's my first time using RedLine so my reasoning for the switch was based on what I read online and anecdotal "evidence". I would say the gearbox feels a little smoother when I shift. Compared to other MT's I've had (Honda & Mazda) I find these more clunky and the new fluid did remove some of the clunk. Overall, I figure there has to be some metal floating around the tranny from the first 20K km's so a fresh drain and fill would help longterm. There was in fact a slight metallic sheen to the OEM oil when I drained it so I was happy to replace it anyway. I bought a 6 pack on eBay and did both GT's same day.

Am I positive it's better? No. Would I recommend it to others? Absolutely. I imagine you would notice a greater improvement in the cold as well. You only need 2 bottles for the job so it wasn't a big investment and it only took 30 minutes. Based on your experience with your Tib, I'm surprised you haven't done it already.

My Tib had a lot of kilometers so the difference was very noticeable. I was not the original owner so I was not sure if it was ever done before at all. When we cracked the drain, a very bad smell came out. The original oil was rancid. For me it was night and day difference. Not sure if I would do it before the recommended change but I am not even sure what that is.

I purchased my 2014 last August. A few months later the dealer was already calling me for my first service appointment. I had barely reached 3,000km by that point so I told them I would call them in a few months.

I did the 6,000km service last month, even though I wasn't quite at 6,000. Now I'm just over that.

tomorrow i'll take her to her first service. Question here.
The inspection and oil change is complementary but i have to buy the fuel additive. Do you recommend any special one?

#27 ·
Why do you have to buy additive? It's my understanding that you don't need to add any if you use "top tier" gas, which should include almost any fuel supplier these days. Even Kirkland gas (Costco) boasts it has 5x the required additives required to meet Top Tier standards. I used to add Lucas fuel conditioner thinking it made some difference and kept the fuel system clean, but I don't think it's necessary on a regular basis, especially with our newer cars. Maybe a couple times per year, preferably when you plan a longer freeway trip.

My '14 Elantra GT has the 2.0/ MT with style and tech package with Blue metallic flake paint and Black leather. I picked it up with 3 miles on the gauge in Oct. 2014. I just turned 22,000 on the odo, and will be switching over to Mobil 1 Synthetic and Bosch Oil filter by next weekend.

I set the steering to sport before I left the lot, and never tried the other settings. Steering weight and response is perfect for performance driving. I did find the engine would choke out some at higher RPM, and found a thread on here that recommended to turn off the eco system. Once that was done, I can run straight to redline without a hiccup.

I fill up with predominantly Shell 93 octane, throw in a tank of 87 or 89 now and then to shake it up. I have gotten as much as 35mpg and as low as 28 mpg tank average, and considering every stop light is a new adventure i am not complaining at all :) The service advisor said I have no need for performance fuel, but then one sentence later told me that the reason the rear end felt soft to me was because I was driving the car beyond its suspensions performance capabilities. I'll stick with the 93.
Would really love some better shocks in the back. Car feels bulky with the panoramic roof and throws up and down to the point it's hitting the bump stops. Skips over rough roads especially when turning.
Will be planning on changing the gear lube in the MT soon, getting K&N and some Nokian Tyres. Will switch to slotted rotors and performance pads when the time comes.

Looking at 24k+ miles a year if I keep this pace, have one dent/chip from a semi truck flipping a chunk of board at my hood (Motherf*****!). Washed regularly with Turtle wax zip wash, waxed with Once a Year polish every 4 months as I am an overachiever :), rain x windows as needed and underbody washed every 2 months at the Laserwash. Chevron Fuel system cleaner ever 6k or so. Car will have aprox 150k miles when I pay it off, unless I trade or for a Santa Cruz!

My 13' GT GLS has ~52000 km on it..bought in July 2012.

Only issues:

1) All weather mat on the driver's side that developed a hole (they didn't warranty it ...after 12 months)....
2) Radio on occasion...goes wonky...display konks out...but comes back after re-starting the car ....haven't bothered getting it looked at. IT works 99% of the time..and I'd rather not risk the dealer tech 'gimping' it more than fixing it.
3) on about 8 occassions since I've had the car......I had starting problems...this only happened when it just rained..or I just washed the car.....again, haven't gotten this looked for the same reason as point #2 above...
4) the fan, at speed #2 ...one can hear a bit of a 'whir....' at a weird frequency....I didn't notice this until a friend did while sitting in the car....it's not noticeable.

Maybe I should have gotten item 2 and 3 looked at...oh well. Car drives fine, and the issues 2, 3, and 4 aren't currently occurring.

Interesting about the ECO mode. I turned it on right after I got the car and was still getting used to the 6 speed gearing vs. my old 5 speed car. I notice that sometimes it doesn't seem as responsive as I expect when I shift and a bit sluggish - maybe I should try turning the eco mode off to see if I can tell a difference? Anyone else have any info regarding the effect of the eco mode on performance? To be honest, I thought it was just shifting reminder to tell you to shift up early to save gas rather than a setting that adjusts the internal workings of the car.

By the way, I have around 3500 miles on my 2014 GT. Headed in for first service this weekend (or as soon as I can get an appt.) I need to go to dealer this time because I need to have all the bluelink stuff transferred to me since the car was previously titled for a month before I purchased. Debating on whether to go to other places that are more convenient with my schedule after that for the routine oil changes.

To date, in the forums, there is only poor evidence and poor theory in regards to ECO mode on the MT influencing performance. Myself, among others have tried testing the difference, and if there is one, it would be in noise range. I have yet to hear of anyone hooking a dyno up to the car and testing it though. So until otherwise, it's just a shift indicator... :)
