Does our GT share suspension capabilities with the sedan? Also, I have the tech package with the 17in wheels which might have suspension tuned differently?
As I recall, the GT's rear suspension is a upgraded a bit from the sedan's torsion bar setup. Hyundai calls is a v-beam suspension. I would gather from this that suspension upgrades from the sedan probably wouldn't work for the GT and/or wouldn't be much, if any, improvement.
The GT's rear suspension is still basically a solid-axle setup and not as good as the multilink rear suspension setups found on some of the GT's competitors and the Euro version of the GT (the i30). Whether shock upgrades would improve things further is hard to say - the stock setup may be pretty much at the limit of what is possible the basic design.
Agreed. You're likely to notice a bigger improvement by changing to better tires and/or checking/changing alignment specs. I've pushed the car pretty hard and all I notice can attributed to the design and tires. The dampers do a decent job of keeping the tires planted, but the taller sidewalls of the stock tires have significant flex.
I'd be willing to bet the rear shocks are the same in the sedan and GT. The swing arm may differ slightly but I believe the shocks and springs are all in the same place and can be swapped out just the same.
Those KYB's should bolt right in as they do on the sedan.
Checking part numbers and looking at the rear suspension assemblies should reveal this easily enough.
Even if the part numbers are different, I bet they bolt in just the same.
Installed some new tires (Cooper Zeon RS3-A) which have seemed to improve the traction and corner handling (waiting a few days before I really push it) but I can still say that the car's rear end jumps when hitting bumps in a manner similar to the Hankooks. Driving over manhole covers and such is just as unsettling as before.
If I were the handy type I would try to verify if those KYB shocks would work for sure. On the fence as to if I should try them. Since I would have to have them shipped its not like I can easily return them.
I would think that the shocks are the same pattern as the shocks on the Elantra sedan; I really want to get this car from hopping around the corners! I'm very close to being the lab rat on this one....

I put KYB shocks in my old nissan, and I think I took them for granted...I'll probably do shocks (and maybe a sway bar) in the summer, since I just picked it up.
Has anyone found any additional info about using the sedans suspension on our GTs. There are a handful of companies making coilovers for the sedan , but the only coilover solution I can source is from SMA suspension ,which would be a part straight from the motherland. Id prefer getting a setup I can rebuild if they should blow , and well, for that I would like something I can source from North america.
The rear shocks are the the same PN between the sedan and the GT. The KYB aftermarket shocks are getting rave reviews on the MD sedan forum - everyone who makes the switch are very happy with them.
I do think the sedan in stock form has worse issues with rear tires hopping sideways on bumps than the GT... but that said I am considering the shock swap to KYB on my GT... hopefully to tune out some of the rough pavement harshness that is transmitted into the GT.
Having the rear tires better planted can't be bad feel either.
Better tires won't hurt either.... but that is a upgrade for another day.
The Cooper Zeons have been a great upgrade on the GT: more confidence on the highway, and much better grip in the wet. Cornering is much better as well.
But as I mentioned earlier, the rear end of the car is still not very settled; I am looking to get these shocks as well once a reliable supplier is found. Would like to do this before June.
Also, in the linked thread the poster said they got them from Tire Rack. I found KYB shocks, but there is very little info on them. And they're cheap. Makes me a little suspicious honestly.
I'm curious about the specs. Often OEM replacements have good compression valving but poor rebound valving. Even the KYB website give very little technical info. Are they rebuild-able? Can they be revalved? Are they specifically valved for our GT?
I'm looking at this as part of an overall upgrade. Changing only one piece (IE: dampers) seems like a waste to me. Combine dampers (front and rear), sways (stiff up front, softer rear), good tires (the SINGLE most important part of this equation) and changing camber and toe, then we have a party.
I've hit this car pretty hard on numerous occasions and it seems the stock tires are one of, if not the, largest factor in poor handling in stock form.
Again, if anyone has a link to more technical info on these shocks I'd be grateful.
Just ordered mine off Amazon.com ($164 delivered) When you link thru it says that it doesn't fit the GT, but it's the shock (554384) that everyone is getting, and installing successfully.
I'll report back once they're on (a couple weeks I think -- 5-10 days delivery)

Yes, that's the same info I found. Vague. At least it's listed as a mono-tube design. Now if it can be revalved.......
Anyone know if our cars have external bump-stops or are they built into the shock?
Yes, I read that thread, thanks! I think I'll wait until more manufacturers jump in and someone makes an adjustable model-specific shock and upgraded sways/bushings. In the meantime I'll keep taking my other car to the track/auto-x.
Sedan owner, here. Jumped over to let you know one of our forum members owns both: Sedan MD & GT. He purchased 2 sets of the same shock: KYB # 554384. Not wanting to steal his thunder, his assessment on both cars follows:

The GT got it first, the shocks I ordered were the same for both cars. They fit just as well on the GT as the sedan. Easy install on both, no issues. they fit right in without forcing or making them fit.
The GT results:
Wife says GT was a noticable difference in ride quality, she said " I didn't realise thre was an issue until now, I just drove slower to keep in control. It rides over bumps much better and corners like its on train rails". "it's much better then before".
Ordered from canadapartsonline.com for my GT
Shows as in stock, but we shall see. Were not cheap ($235 shipped, taxes in and no duties). But its worth it IMO.
Thanks for being the guinea pig on this and to silvergls for starting this thread. Have been following this for a long time.
Yes, the other boards will be looking and buying too!!!!
Ordered these for my GT. Paid $174 CDN delivered to NS, Canada from RockAuto.com.
Can't wait to get them and put them on to get rid of the wiggle... Is there an install thread anywhere?
I was looking and couldn't find one. Post up if you know where it is.

It's pretty straight forward. Loosen the lug nuts, jack up the car, continue loosening the lugs and remove the wheel.
Block the front wheel and exercise EXTREME caution while under there. I don't want anyone injured doing this mod.
You'll need a 17mm & 19mm socket or wrench (wrench will take you longer), a ratchet, extension and torque wrench. Inside the wheel well is the bolt to the upper strut mount. Loosen it and pull out enough to loosen the strut at the top. Next, remove the nut on the bottom of the strut mount. Take out the old strut and guide the new one in its place.
Installation is reverse. Put a couple of drops of oil on the threads to achieve a truer torque when you're tightening everything back together. Torque that strut mount upper bolt and lower nut to 85-87 foot pounds of torque.
Bolt on the wheels. While you've got that torque wrench handy go ahead and torque the lug nuts to 75-80 foot pounds to prevent the possibility of warping your rotors. I even put a few drops of oil on those threads, as well. Sure helps if you have to take off a wheel in the future.
Last step: ENJOY your "new" ride. And I do mean, NEW!!!!
My pleasure. This is, easily, one of the more simple mods one can do and achieve maximum satisfaction. While it's not as easy as changing engine or cabin filters, it will give the novice mechanic a taste of being a true wrench head. LOL It's good to get to know your car on a more personal basis. For the older forum member's, they will remember this statement from a former car commercial: "It's not your father's Oldsmobile!"
Shocks arrived today....**** that was fast i only ordered them sunday night!! Will have to wait till the weekend to put them on. I'll leave a full report after a good road test. I cant wait to "feel" the difference!!!!
When I looked at the tracking info, it was really fast out of their warehouse..plus they're just east of NYC, so close to NJ.
Wow...mine are already in Dorval QC, so only a hop, skip, and a jump to Ottawa! Prolly have 'em by the weekend too...though tracking info still estimates delivery by May 7th...
You guys and gals are going to love this mod. It's the best gift you can give yourselves AND your ride. I just wish I had done it sooner. But, no matter...done now! And LOVIN' IT!!!
FedEx says mine will be here this Thursday. Hopefully I'll get em on that day or Friday ....I have a road trip planned for this weekend too.
Edit..don't let Andrew in the MD forum see these quick deliveries.....
Amazon's tracking report says mine are waiting for me at my front door! That's insanely fast considering it was cross-border. No signature required...hopefully that means no brokerage fees either (not bloodly likely)
I wish! Already all booked up, plus there's plenty of rain forecast :'(
Probably tomorrow tho!
