What did you do to your Elantra today?

This could be a long running fun thread for Elantra owners.

I participate regularly in various motorcycle/car forums and this type of thread is usually a fun one. It gives us a lot of ideas of what each of us does from one day to another on our cars and also gives us ideas of what to do to our own Elantra's...

Please post here if you drove it to work, dusted it or washed it, took the engine out, pumped up the tires, turned on the lights & looked at it... etc etc, you get the idea. Nothing is too trivial to post here... Anything goes as long as it was to your Elantra GT, Sedan or Coupe... or a fun comment on someone elses activity.

So??

I swapped out my donut spare for one of my winter tires from storage into the trunk.... so I have a temporary spare that is full sized.

I also loosened and re torqued all the wheel lugs nuts after my oil change shop inspected my brakes last week and just used an impact (no torque wrench) to tighten the lug nuts.

There are a few products designed specifically for bug removal. The one I use is Poorboy's Bug Squash, it gets diluted with water (I mix at 3:1 water to product) and it's still very effective while leaving your wax or sealant intact. The key is to get them before they are dried for days and start etching the paint with the acidic bug guts.

If it has dried, you can use a wet towel and lay it there for 10 mins or so until the bugs soften then come off easily. Another alternative I've heard but never used is a dampened dryer sheet supposedly will wipe the bugs away and is safe for the paint. Maybe try that until you get a product dedicated/designed for the job.

39 MPG?!?!?! How in the world did you do that? PLEASE HELP ME!! I am only getting 26-28 in my new 2014 Elantra Spirt. Its only been on three tanks but I am terribly disappointed. I traded in a Nissan Pathfinder SUV I totally loved that got 21 MPG hoping for 35. ( I needed 35 to make it financially logical to trade in...) PLEASE tell me what I am doing wrong. PS - my commute is 45 miles each way on highway, and then another 20 miles on city streets and 20 more on highway each day -- 110 per day on Highway and 20 on streets. I should get at least 34 right? Please help.

Detailed yesterday, so she hit the garage after work this afternoon and looks awesome. Giving her the evening off. I dunno...maybe go spray some stuff on the tires in a bit. Tomorrow, however? Hmm...weather's supposed to be nice, she's full of fuel from stopping on the way home, looking good, and I have an itch to go somewhere.

I put a coat of Turtle Wax Ice on just before a trip and the bugs washed off pretty quick when I took a long rad trip last summer.

I finally installed my HeadLight Armor yellow fog light lens covers.... had them in the box for awhile...

Pretty smooth install, but they needed trimming per the instructions which was unexpected. X-acto knife was handy for that. No reason I can see that they can't make them exact size.

made an appointment for a 4 wheel alignment check/ adjustment.... tires are not wearing evenly across the width. They have about 28,000 kms on them.
there is only 1 shop in my area (that I know of) that can actually the rear with shims... and the tires most worn wrong were rear tires recently rotated to the front in April.
That shop (1 man business) is busy.... the appointment is 19 days away (June 23).

DOH.... backed into my garage door while it was going up .... :(
A PDR guy has been called - appointment set .... hopefully he will make the hatch dent vanish... for sure taking along with him the contents of my wallet.

What was I thinking?

This car has attracted more minor dents, scrapes and other contacts in 19 months than my last vehicle did in 13 years. It has 2 drivers, some (most) self inflicted :wallbash: a couple other drivers have got me in parking lots. Disappointing array as well, all 4 sides.. twice on each side.

Sorry about the rear hatch, I have a habit of hopping in the car, starting it, then pushing the button to open the door as well. It may be a matter of time before I perform this "DOH" as well.

And I'm with you on the self inflicted minor damages. I've only owned my 14' GT for 3 months, and it also seems to be attracting more minor dings, dents and scratches than any vehicle I've owned in the past, most of which have been self inflicted (Most recently I managed to chip the paint on the door edge when the door ever so slightly tapped the exhaust of my motorbike).

While it irks me every time a minor infliction occurs, I've decided that for a car I paid less than $16k for, and even though I'm the first owner, it's just not worth stressing over. Not to mention it's easier on my wallet if I touch up minor flaws myself, and only get body repair technicians involved if there is indeed a MAJOR event. In the future when I finally pay over $20k for a car, maybe I'll stress it a little more.

Good luck with your repairs!

Yesterday, I installed some HIDs and LEDs in various locations with more to come later. The whiter lights TOTALLY make this car look better, and nicely compliment the stock LED tails. I'm loving this car more and more every day, and so far it's very easy to work on (mod). :D

Are the license plate bulbs pretty easy to swap out? The manual says that the light housing needs to be squeezed inwards and it should drop out. I tried for a while but couldn't quite get it to work. I'm going to try to use two flat head screwdrivers next to see if I can get more leverage.

I just noticed that in the pics the headlights look like they're on, but they aren't...weird light refraction through the projectors I suppose.

Because of the letters? I doubt many people would even notice...? Only people stopped behind me at traffic lights etc... Even then theyll probably just think its the name of the sub model or something. i30s are only just starting to get popular in the town I live in which is rural, so people woud be none the wiser. Anyway, would the reaction be much different then seeing a T badge and i30 badge on your Hyundai Elanta GT? Or is it a T i30 now?

Wrap those flat blade tips with some electrical tape BEFORE you go digging around trying to remove those lenses. There's a plastic clip on one side. Pusih in, and gently pull downward. Then pull the other side away and out to get the two hold down tabs away from the sheet metal. One slip on a bare metal blade is all you need and you'll be singing the blues for a long time.

Best bet is to use some plastic trim tools, available as a set of 5 or 6 at Harbor Freight, or most auto parts stores for $10 or less. They're multi-purpose. Good for lots of things. Once you get them, you'll discover a ton of uses.

License plate LED's enhance the total overall view of the car's rear end. It's almost as if it's a totally different vehicle.
