On Wednesday I wrote an email to autotrader alarming them to the fact that Genesis is in fact available for retail sale, and they hadn't listed it. Perhaps coincidentally, on Thursday the model became available under 'Hyundai'. And now:
http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/searchresult...dsfyc=&systime=216 vehicles for sale. Enjoy the car pr0n

I was bored and browsing around on hmaservice and ran across the PDF on how you check transmission fluid on this thing. Did anybody else see that? Holy crap! No dipstick from what it looks like. Plug in the scan tool, make sure you get the fluid to the proper temperature, run it through the gears, put the car up on a hoist, remove a drain plug, if stuff comes out then it has fluid in it. Then you need special tools to put fluid in the thing, it doesn't have an ordinary filler tube. Good thing it's lifetime fluid.

But I guess if you've got enough money to buy a Genesis, you can pay the Hyundai dealer hundreds of dollars to tell you whether there's any fluid in there.

It says the fluid is available at Toyota and Lexus dealers, this isn't another one of those Toyota transmissions is it? (ahem, VeraCruz...)

Just finished reading an article about the Genesis in the August '08 Automobile magazine. Straight forward, some photographs - similar to their earlier website review of the car.

The story of what's underneath -- and inside -- the Hyundai Genesis is central to the story of the car and what Hyundai's trying to do with it. The body-in-white of the Genesis has a larger total body area than the Lexus LS460 and Mercedes S-Class. Yet ten years ago, if we had asked you which carmaker would create a rear-wheel-drive V8 sedan with a body structure that is larger, yet stiffer and lighter than the 5-Series or E-Class, would you have guessed it would be Hyundai?
Of course, you probably wouldn't have guessed that BMW would be selling all the MINIs it could make, or that Alfa Romeo would sell out a run of $200K supercars. The lesson: the games -- plural -- have changed for everyone. Follow the jump to find out how the Genesis is the spearhead of change for Hyundai and, if Hyundai gets its wish, the entire luxury segment. And be sure to check out the gallery of hi-res images below.
Before we dive inside, we'll start outside with the Genesis' design. We remember seeing the HCD-1 in 1992, and thinking, "Wow, a Hyundai..." The stream of HCDs that followed have had us thinking the same thing -- meanwhile, we saw almost none of their daring on dealer floors. We were showed slides of Genesis concepts during a presentation in Korea, and some were genuinely stunning. When we got the chance to speak briefly to the designer of the HCD-1, our question was why isn't the Genesis a little bit... bolder?
The various answers we got from him and several other designers were that, essentially, the Genesis should be considered a test of the Hyundai Luxury System. They wanted a mainstream design that wasn't extravagant and emphasized proportion, stability and dynamism. Success on all counts. It's a good looking car -- it's simply not memorable. We were, though, told that a more distinct design vocabulary will come. For now, they don't want to crash the party with something that will make people wonder, "Um, who invited that?"
A discussion of design led naturally to the issue of badging. We really like the winged Genesis badges, and couldn't understand why Hyundai didn't call the thing a Genesis instead of a Hyundai. A few readers have asked the same question, with one commenter nailing it when he wrote, "This is one of the best arguments for a separate brand. I think Hyundai really dropped the ball on this one. A Genesis line (Coupe, Sedan, Veracruz SUV) would make a killing." Hyundai had considered that exact proposition.
There are a number of reasons why they didn't follow through. Hyundai hired an outside consultant to estimate the cost of launching a standalone brand, and the number they quoted was $250 million, with a break-even point 13 years hence. For a company focused on delivering a lot for a little, and not selling cars at a loss, that's a large number to spend in the unscientific arena of penetrating brand consciousness, which is what this would come down to. And we assume that is the necessary number only if the brand succeeds as intended; other standalone brands have spent much more than that to launch in the U.S. and, arguably, still haven't met their objectives.
Beyond hard cash is the softer, marketing-driven reason: Hyundai of America's marketing honcho said "We want to use the Genesis to sell 30,000 more Azeras." When looking for the kind of association that will lead to that kind of sales impact, not creating a separate brand makes sense. A Nissan GT-R can be expected to help shift more 350Zs -- certainly far more than the supposed Infiniti version of the GT-R would.
Hyundai wants you to think of the Genesis as a Hyundai, not a Genesis. Initially, in light of the branding, we didn't realize that -- the banners in Korea all read "Genesis by Hyundai," not "Hyundai Genesis." Once we understood the sales aspect, it made sense. The Genesis will be sold in a special area of a dealer's showroom, described at one point as a "well decorated corner." So it won't be quite like the Maybach, but looking in that direction. Dealers are installing touch-screen kiosks called iTubes that will mirror information onto laptops, and getting copious tours and training on the car.
They'll be rehearsing their lines to talk about some of the 20 new technologies that Hyundai created for the Genesis -- things about which the typical Hyundai buyer isn't used to hearing. They'll also be talking up the segment advantages a buyer would get from what is supposedly a non-premium car. Among Hyundai firsts and segment advantages are:
HID headlights with auto-leveling depending on the load, and Active Front Lighting that swivels with the steering wheel.
Navigation with a multimedia controller and MOST fiber optic wiring.
Parking sensors in front and back.
Rear back-up camera.
Brake assist and electronic brake distribution.
Cooled driver's seat.
ZF 6-speed transmission in the V8.
Sachs Amplitude Selective Damping (ASD) suspension.
Acoustic laminated glass (windshield and front side windows).
Auto windshield defogger with humidity sensor and rain-sensing wipers.
Highest specific output (HP/liter) V8.
Iridium double-tipped spark plugs good for the life of the engine.
5-link suspension with aluminum knuckles, lateral arms, tension arms, and carriers front and rear.
Electronic active head restraints.
Proximity entry with electronic pushbutton start.
Aluminum hood.
Replaceable "crash box" structures to absorb low-speed impacts and reduce repair costs.
Roof and side outer panels fused with a continuous laser weld, not spot welding.
HD radio.
500-watt Lexicon LOGIC7 audio system with 17 speakers, a 12-channel digital amplifier, and available 40GB hard drive.
Three-stage Smart Cruise Control available after a year.
Speaking of that ZF 6-speed, sixth is geared to run laughably low RPMs -- on the test track, the V8 was doing 3,500 RPM at 130 mph.
Otherwise, on the tech front, Hyundai has teamed with Microsoft to work on future car entertainment systems. According to Hyundai, things like voice-controlled connectivity between mobile devices will be available in the U.S. from 2010. The Genesis also has a "cluster ionizer" -- but we didn't press that button for fear it would zap us back to the scene of our parents' courtship.
That's a lot of gadgetry for a Hyundai. Or, Hyundai would probably like you to think that used to be a lot of gadgetry for a Hyundai. Some readers have made much of the troubles Hyundai had with the Excel. Yet if things had really been that thoroughly awful, Hyundai wouldn't be here anymore. Forget about Yugo -- anyone remember Renault, Peugeot, and Fiat?
During our time in Korea, we got a kick out of the story of Chung Mong-koo, Hyundai's chairman. He headed Hyundai Motors' after-sales service division for 20 years when the company was focused on volume more than quality. When he took over the company, he had long experience with the company's quality problems and knew just what needed to change in order to make better cars.
Are there going to be issues? It's certainly possible, as with any new car. But Hyundai was hitting the top three in J. D. Powers' Initial Quality Survey back in 2006, and you get that five years of bumper-to-bumper protection with 24-hour roadside assistance, and that 10-year / 100,000-mile warranty... and $33,000 for the V6, come on -- it's a great deal on paper and continues Hyundai's tradition of offering more car for less money. In this case, the Genesis is a lot more car.
Other tidbits from our time in K-town:
The Hyundai Corporation comprises 42 companies, including rolling stock, parts, steel, construction, logistics, finance, R&D, and IT.
The Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group (HKAG) is the world's #6 automaker.
Hyundai made its first car, the Pony, in 1967. Before that it built Ford Cortina and Granada kits imported from Europe.
Hyundai motors has 6 R&D centers. It also has a proving ground that it "cribbed" from another automaker by looking at Google maps.
Hyundai's Ulsan, Korea factory is the world's biggest by volume, putting out 1.2 million units annually.
Last year Hyundai sold 1.7 million cars in Korea, 911,000 internationally.
Iran and Egypt are the largest importers of Hyundais (build kits).
In 2009 Hyundai will sell an Elantra that runs on LPG in Korea.
Hyundai plans on having a fuel cell vehicle in production by 2010.
On creating the Genesis: Hyundai got the idea for it five years ago; designing the body took three years; it cost $500 million to develop and included 23 months of development work; reliability testing ran for 800,000 miles.
The Tau engine took 100 engineers four years and $260 million to develop.
Technologies such as direct injection and air suspension were nixed for cost/benefit reasons.
The Genesis is ULEV II compliant.
There is no plan for a diesel Genesis in the near future, nor will the Genesis be going to Europe. The car will go to North America, China, and Russia.
Hyundai is developing paddle shifters, but don't expect them on the sedan any time soon.
There is no 4-wheel-drive version planned.
The guide lines on the reversing camera screen don't turn when you turn the steering wheel.
All workers in the paint, body, assembly, and quality departments of the Genesis factory have at least 19 years of experience.
HKAG has 7 new vehicles planned for the US by 2010.
Now that Hyundai and Kia each have their own designers, Hyundai is planned to be modern and refined, Kia will be sport and dynamic.
In spite of the economic climate, Hyundai plans on adding forty new dealers to its U.S. network.

It is an old adage to never buy a car in the first or second year of initial production. This would be especially true for the Gensis is new in so many ways.
I am very intriqued by the news so far and it really looks like a great car.
But, based on the suspension issues with my 2007 Azera, I'll wait to see what shows up when the professionals review it and do long term tests on it.
Azera is still a very good car and others more than most $50,000 luxury cars in the way of bells and whistles.

Let me preface this by saying I am VERY excited to see/drive the new Genesis. It looks/sounds to be a great vehicle.
With that said, I have a few disappointments, at least in reference to the V6 model.
-No power folding exterior mirrors (Azera has this)
-No power rear sunshade (Azera has this)
-No adjustable pedals (again, the less expensive Azera has this)
-Interior door handles switched from chrome to black and silver plastic (based on the pics at www.hyundaigenesis.com)
-Pricing approx. $3k more than initially expected (understandable given the weak U.S. dollar)
I guess I really shouldn't complain too much. You can't everything in this price range afterall.
Anyone else a tiny bit disappointed or am I just too picky?

If you visit hyundaigenesis.com, get past the intro, then click "specs" on the bottom - do the links on the right side of the screen work for you? "Chassis", "Warranty", etc.? They're all dead for me, tried on IE and Firefox. Looks like this one might have slipped past QA.

Half of our sales team is going on the 7th (I being one of them) and the other half on the 8th. It will be at the Marriott in St. Louis. They're going to have a road course and everything setup where we can drive the Genesis and compare to the BMW, Lexus, and Infiniti vehicles. At the Veracruz launch event the Hyundai executives told us to "have a blast, and try to flip it!"--so this should be fun! Also, I don't know if anyone has confirmed it in another post, but we just got a letter "down the wire" that says the Genesis sales date has been made official and confirmed for July (exact day depends on location).

I was out back in the yard today and my friend calls me as he's coming over. "Get up front and see the black car about to go by." Knowing I couldn't get up there in time, I asked him what it was. "It's a Genesis." I sprinted up the side yard and jumped into his car. I know the guy who has it as he works for Hyundai and always gets the newest and the best.
We pulled up right as he was getting out and we struck up conversation. I was wearing my Hyundai hat...
So we got to talking about the Genesis and he let me sit in it, start it up, and toy with the car. He had the 4.6 Tau V8 in black with the espresso brown leather.
I must say, Hyundai did an A+ job on this car as it looks even better in person and everything about it amazing!! If this is what they've got now, I can't wait to see us in 10 years! Shame I can't afford one or I'd buy it.

For those of you that know Jersey I was coming home from Wildwood on the AC expressway and I see a Lexus LS coming up the left lane. I take a look and see Genesis wheels and a Hyundai emblem, my mouth opened and I said that's a Genesis! Everyone looked at me
I knew they aren't out yet so I got behind it and saw it had Manufacturer plates from Jersey. It seemed to be a V8 with Xenon's and Nav from what I could tell and it was silver with black interior. I followed the guy for a mile or so and got along side and honked the horn and he gave me a thumbs up. That car looks so amazing cruising down the road.

Like I said in the previous post I will likely get anxious and buy another Lux car when I get back to the states rather than wait for the Genesis. I have seen the Genesis on the roads here in Korea, and I must admit it is a handsome car. However, all I see here in Korea is primarily Hyundais so its hard for me to imagine anything else. That being said, I have done quite a bit of research on the net because my wife is pregnant and I need a four door car. We have traditionally been a Hyundai family thus far with an 06 Tiburon and an 07 Santa Fe. With a child on the way I need four doors now and have a sizeable amount of money put away because I have lived off of $400 a month for the last year and received additional pay for being overseas (Army, and I make $4000 a month and got $700 more per month for the time I spent away from home. do the math). It looks like to me Hyundai continues its tradition of trying to carbon copy the competition. I have included two photos in this post, one of the lexus GS and one of the Genesis. I am really thinking of going for another car. Is the Genesis worth waiting for? You decide and lets talk about it here.

This is long. It's me again. My last post was supposed to be a comparison of the Genesis, versus my interest.
Well here is some background. I am in the Army stationed in Korea. I had to go to Seoul today (Yongsan) and as I was leaving the unit I was visiting, I had to go off post, turned a corner, and there in a display window of a Hyundai dealer was a brand new black Genesis. I went in, talked to the sales person (Korean sales person with broken english) and he let me sit in it, start it, play around in it (feel materials, try out functions) and gave me literature on it.
Impressions:
First off, it's a very nice car. Mind you this is the Korean model. It had the wood adourned dash. I'll get the negative out of the way early. I am 6ft and it seemed very cramped to me for such a large car. Even after adjusting the seat I had to conciously refrain from allowing my knees to touch the dash when messing around with the pedals. This could be because there really isn't any Koreans as big as me. I was here also in '95 and have never met a Korean of my stature so it could be seat placement or seat build for this market. It could be different for the North American model. As far as interior materials are concerned, IMHO fit and finish was among the best I've seen and the materials were mostly top notch. The only exception to this is the climate control buttons near the clock. They are plastic painted silver and the best way I can describe them is they are very similar to the silver painted bands in my 2005 F150 on it's dash surrounding the center stack and the dashboard "wings" near the door hinges. My F150's "band's" paint started rubbing off due to the contact they had with the doors as they were opened and closed. They developed black spots. Well this post is about the Genesis, not my F150 so I'll digress. The climate control buttons being painted silver is unfortunate in my opinion, because the climate control is a "high traffic area" in any car and with heavy use I would worry that paint would rub off exposing the plastics true color beneath. Aside from that and the headliner, which is such a very small thing, I felt as if I was sitting in a very substantial automobile. I mean really, who ever looks up? Anyway, as I left the showroom the salesman gave me some literature, to include a Korean pricing guide. The top of the line BH 380 Royal Genesis which is comparable to the fully loaded V8 Genesis for the US is $56,547 or 58,300,000 Korean WON. I hope that price doesn't translate to US dollars as we get the Genesis. I also got the Korean Brochure for the Genesis and it is not much more than a comparison between it and Lexus and BMW.
Bonus:
The Genesis is big, I mean big. As I was riding the bus back to Pyongtaek I saw a Genesis at a stoplight next to the Lexus GS. The Genesis is bigger but not by much and looks more substantial. Anyway that is my 2 cents. Have a good weekend everyone.
*EDIT* Sorry I was using a computer lab to type that and they were closing so I got kicked out before I fully finished. I am using a different computer now so I want to add some things.
In pictures the Genesis is comparable to a lot of automobiles. I my self compared it to the Lexus GS offering similar shots of the two cars in similar colors on my last post. However, I am glad I got to see them side by side at a stop light. I wish I had a camera. The Lexus, for a lack of a better way to describe it, looked hollow next to the Genesis. The Genesis had seals and "filler" where on the Lexus there was none except for exposed bodywork. For example, the Genesis has a guard type plate under it's bumper making the dual exhaust tips look more like an integral part of the car where as the Lexus doesn't. They just kind of hang under indentions the bumper. Does my description make sense? And the Lexus, even here in this market, is a far pricier car. From 50 feet away, out of a bus window, the Genesis looks like a better built, more substantial, car. For me that is saying alot. Did I already mention the Genesis is bigger? Because it is. Now also on my travels I saw the Nissan Maxima clone, the infinity. It looks more brittle in its bodywork but it looks much more detailed and upscale compared to the Genesis. Like I said above. This is just my two cents and just my opinion.
- Chris

News wire services are reporting that 700 Genesis sedans bound for the U.S. have already been pre-sold and Hyundai has received over 20,000 inquiries since the vehicle's unveiling in Detroit.

Hyundai has already presold 700 Genesis sedans in U.S.
Posted on: May 26th, 2008
The Hyundai Genesissedan won’t launch in the U.S. until later this summer but Hyundai says that dealers have already presold 700 units of its luxury car along with more than 20,000 customers who have expressed interest in the car.
Hyundai will spend more than $80 million on a marketing campaign for the new Genesis - the most it has spent to launch any vehicle in the U.S. The Korean automaker plans to sell only 30,000 in the first year with pricing to be between $30,000 and $40,000.
“Genesis will help sell all Hyundai vehicles,” said Joel Ewanick, vice president of marketing for Hyundai Motor America. “This car will allow us to reach new customers and talk up quality like we never have.”
Hyundai will offer the Genesis in a variety of powertrains choices including a 3.3L V6 that produces 268 horsepower and a 3.8L V6 that produces 290 horsepower and a peak torque of 264 lb-ft. The range topper Tau 4.6L V8 produces 375 horsepower giving the Genesis the ability to do 0-60 in less than six seconds.

Hyundai has finally updated the Genesis website, which was nothing more than a patchwork of unimaginative images of low res quality to something much better looking, with new details, and looking far more upscale to match the luxury like ambiance of the soon to be released Genesis sedan. For those of us who have been critical of the previously released site, I think this is a major improvement.

As I stated, take it with a grain of salt - they could very well be full of it. With that said, the GM at our Hyundai dealer said that for the initial roll out of the sedan each dealership will get ONE. He didn't say what model, color, etc., he just said ONE per dealership.
If I hear any more about the truthfulness of this I'll post back. This would really suck as I'm sure it would start a bidding war of some sort.

SoCal Euro's eagle-eyed forum fan-boy by the name of "dub*man" caught some shots of the new 2009 Hyundai Genesis at rest in a local SoCal parking lot. We're assuming it wasn't just stopping for a quick bite at a local Korean BBQ joint. Whatever it was doing there without manny plates affixed to the back end, we're happy he caught some clearer shots of the new four-door with the ever-changin' grille from the boys n' girls at Hyundai. Yes, Hyundai.
