There seems to be a single clunk noise when pulling the e-brake this happens one every time you pull on the handle.. so for example if I where to pull it 6 times once every time it would make a clunking noise.. I can hear in the cab and seems to be coming from the rear drivers side.. and ideas?

A few ignition questions for those in the know please.....
1. I'm planning on replacing the spark plugs soon. I notice in the Owner's Manual it recommends the NKG or Champion Platinum ones...neither of which I can readily find. I have found the Bosch Platinum +4 ones that are apparently the right ones, but these have 4 "points of ignition" leading up to the end of the spark plug...suppose to be better...but should I just stick with the recommended ones in the manual?
2. I also want to replace the spark plug wires...however can someone correct me if I'm wrong, but am I right in assuning there are only TWO spark plug wires to replace here as the other two are actually the ignition coils on top of the other two spark plugs? In other words, the way I'm viewing it is there appears to only be two actual spark plug "plugs" that have normal spark plug wires coming from them. The other ends of these attach to each of the two ignition coils, and the two ignition coils seem to have an integrated "plug" that goes into the spark plug well and replaces what would normally be a spark plug "plug" on two of the spark plugs. Is this correct? So when I go to buy spark plug wires should I expect to find just to wires in the box for the kit??
3. And as for the ignition coils...I recently had one replaced. I never even knew what or where they were until I went looking to replace the spark plugs. So am I correct in assuming there are TWO igintion coils in the Santa Fe, and they take the place of two of the spark plug "plugs" that go into the spark plug well and attach to the top of the spark plug?? If so, is there any difference between the left and right one when it comes to replacement? Are they literally a unplug and re-plug in replacement when it comes to replacing an iginiton coil? Nothing elese to do but hook the wires back up?
Thanks!!!

Hi,
I have 2005 Santa Fe. For third time now my air filter is soaked. The first time I recall going through puddle and then learned from dealer air intake in driver's side wheel well.
So we've been careful around puddles now which is sort of ridiculous living in Pacific NW but...
The car stalled again on me the other day, I popped open the air filter box, and sure enough there was wet bubbley (and clean?) water in air box and my air filter was soaked.
I feel like I bought a lemon! The last dealer I took it to was just local and not where I purchased it so I'm going back to where I bought to see if they can repair.
I've only found a few references to this problem online. Anyone else come across this? Any solutions??
Basically I like the car but cannot have something that may die at any time.
Thanks for any info.
Chris

Hi - changed my timing belt and spark plugs with wires recently. I found my car's overall noise levels (engine) reduced however the RPM jumps high (beyond 3000) whenever I am attempting to accelerate, even from full stop. Just wondering if this is normal? Someone told me to do a complete reset of the system , i.e. remove battery terminals, wait for 5 min and connect them back again. Basically, it would reset the adaptive shift transmission system and then vehicle will learn again. I am wondering if this will help. Please help as it's un-necessarily eating up +$4 gas costs, these days.

We own a 2001 2wd Santa Fe. Recently replaced the harmonic balancer, due to an interstate emergency!!

Thats another topic all together!
Anyway, yesterday, we were at road speed of 65mph, using cruise control, when all of a sudden, it downshifted into 3rd gear! Talk about scaring the ---- out of you!
So, got it home, checked trans fluid, all was well, and we let it sit.
Later, we got in it again, and it drove fine.
After it had warmed up, it did the same thing AGAIN!
Now, it will not shift from 3rd gear! It will obviously go into park, but will stay in 3rd not go into 1st, 2nd or overdrive.
What is going on with our LEMON??
We have had ALOT of problems with this vehicle, and this is just another one to add to the list...Is this going to be a big bucks $$$ fix???

I own a 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe AWD with a 2.7L V6. The car has approximately 91,300 miles. (The warranty is no longer valid since I am not the original owner.) I just had the timing belt and timing belt tensioner replaced. When I picked the car up, there was a new metallic-sounding clocking noise present that was not there before. It is proportional to engine speed (i.e. - it is more rapid at high RPMs) and does NOT go away once the engine has warmed up to normal operating temperature. I drove the car for several days and a few hundred miles, and it seems to operate normally (oil pressure and engine temperature are OK, and gas mileage is the same as normal). It just has this annoying metallic-sounding clocking noise.
I took the car back to find out what this noise was, and the service shop (which is part of a Hyundai dealer) claimed that the noise was due to a faulty sepertine belt tensioner. This sounded suspicious, but since they do have to pull off the serpentine belt to replace the timing belt, I agreed. (They only charged me for the sepertine belt tensioner itself, not the labor.)
When I picked up the car, the noise was still there! I told them that they hadn't fixed the problem, so they looked at it again and now they say that the lifters are bad and it will cost about $600 to replace them. (Oh, and they say the noise is different now and they will not refund the money for the serpentine belt tensioner.)
Clearly, this dealer did something wrong to cause this noise, and now they are jerking me around to a.) cover their butts, and b.) see how much money they can get out of me.
Any idea on what this metallic-sounding clocking noise could be? And is it possible (and even probable) that it was caused by faulty work in replacing the timing belt and timing belt tensioner?

I see that those with the new Santa Fe have started a thread on mileage and to see how theirs are holding up. I figure we 'originals'

should have the same thing.
Give us your date of purchase, whether you bought it new or used, the current mileage (in miles or km), and any problems you have or have had.
Bought New: 10.30.2004 with 26 miles on the odo
Currently: 97,680 miles
Current Problems: Rattling heat shield, parking brake cable needs to be tightened.
Other than that...I've got nothing wrong with her. My friends and family think this engine could make it to 300,000 miles no problem. They said it as a statement. I took it as a challenge!

I went to the dealership because my airbag light was coming on and they told me that my front passengers side seat belt buckle needs to be replaced as the seat belt is not properly latching and there is an issue with the wiring. So they said I need to replace the buckle - and it will cost something to the tune of $250 just for the part. Does anyone know where I can order this part online where it will be cheaper? I have a very reliable mechanic who can replace the buckle I just need the part. I have looked at different websites - and either there isn't a detailed description of the part or it says it doesn't come with an airbag sensor in the buckle. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I had CEL on and Autozone said it's something with the accident sensor. Unfortunately, after taking it to Hyundai they said it's nothing and reset the CEL, I forgot the number. The CEL has again re-appeared and I am sure it's the same cause. Digging forums, I realize there are TWO accident sensors connected to the air-intake (FRONT) of the engine. Question: (a) Is this a normal phenomenon for Hyundai SF 2004 (under 60k) to occur? Why i ask is because the rep was telling me it's very unusual error code and kept "harping" on the fact that I might have "hit" something, did something, etc. etc. (

They were also telling me, since I recently changed my timing belt, etc. this is because of that and they need to re-do the whole timing belt ($850) and I should pay for it. Alternatively, I can take the car back to the same rep. where I changed the timing belt. Unfortunately, that's very, very difficult since it's a 4 hr. drive for me. Any help - appreciated.

Hi,
I have a problem with a bad smell (like a sick smell) when I first switch the Air Conditioning on. This lasts for about 5 minutes. I have a late 2002 UK 2.0 litre Turbo Diesel model (right hand drive). Is there a filter that needs replacing? If so where is the filter and how easy is it to access/change on my car ? Would appreciate any help on this matter.
Thanks, Dave.

My blower quit at 68k miles (just 8k over the warranty) and I must wring out the problem and get my blower back. Checked the blower motor with a 9v battery, it works. Checked the resistor and it is in the parameters of "Hmaservice.com", relay and fuses are good because one is shared with the moon roof and the other one is visible. Sooooo it must be the switch, right? Switch is $19 at Hyundai dealership but I cannot get any one to tell me how to remove it! I'm very close to sledge hammer stage. Have removed to screws form the ashtray, but that's as far as I have gotten. Who knows the magic trick to get to that 'three knob control panel' in my center crash pad?

Just had my wife's sante fe out of town in indiana and it broke down. the mechanic shop that they towed it to said the timing belt had broken and they later found that the cam-positioning sensor went bad also. well we had that fixed. about 2 days later after only driving the car for about 2hrs. straight it lost just about all power. it would idle fine but not go easily at all. we had it towed again. This mechanic shop said we had a stopped up cat-converter and also found the 2 O2 sensors to be bad. After replacing those he said he test drove the car and said the more he drove it the worse it run. All the debris from the front converter flowed to the rear converter and stopped it up. Well I told the guy just to cut a slit in the exhaust line between the 2 converters so we could get home and then I would let my muffler guy look at it. Well it drove fine all the way home (bout 600miles). I took it to my muffler guy this morning to get a new rear converter put on and when he was done he said something is causing the front converter to get really hot because he says it is more discolored than it should be. So i am taking to my mechanic tomorrow to have him check it again. Any ideas what could be causing the exhaust to be so hot that i'm taking a chance on melting this new converter as well? fuel consumpsion seems to be bout normal and car runs fine. I'm at my wits end with this crap.

Basically I'm importing my 2001 Santa Fe GLS from the UK to Australia and it will need to comply with their odometer requirements.
I need to know if there is a way to change the Odometer display from miles to km's without having to change the complete assembly unit? Also need to know if you can get replacement dial covers in km's too!
thanks

Thank you to all the experts that share their wisdom here. It's been some good reading so far.
So I have a simple question.
I have a 2004 Santa Fe - 4 cylinder manual transmission.
To keep up to date with the maintenance schedule I will need to replace the spark plugs and engine coolant soon.
I'd like to do as much of this on my own, as I really have a hard time accepting the ridiculous prices the Hyundai dealerships charge. For example I'm looking at their latest service brochure and they want $78.15 to replace the Cabin Air Filter! I just bought one today at Cambodian Tire for $16.00 and it took me less than 3 minutes to remove the old one and replace it!! $78.15 plus taxes!!! ARE YOU JACKIN' ME OR WHAT!!!!??? Geez!
Anyway, I digress...
So what I'm wanting to know from one of the experts is for the Engine Coolant, is it as simple as opening the valve at the bottom of the radiator, draining the old coolant and then refilling it with some new Prestone or similar? Is that all there is too it, because when I see that Hyundai wants me to pay them almost $100 for this I'm wondering what the heck else they do that I can't do myself? Comments from anyone who maybe works in the service department of a Hyundai Dealership?
And as for the spark plugs. I can easily take the old ones out, buy the same ones and replace them. What I don't know is if the new ones need to be "gapped" or if I get the exact same make and model of the ones I remove if they will already be "gapped" to the right measurment or not? Again, Hyundai wants $101.68 to replace 4 of them for me. Sigh... Is there something else they do that I'm not aware of when they replace them, other than obvioulsy inspect the wires etc?
And finally, can someone who works at Hyundai or some other expert advise me of what they actually do if I want a "tune up" other than replace the spark plugs? Do they actualy adjust the valves or adjust the timing or what???
Oh...and sorry...one more question. I've always replaced the oil and filter myeself, and to it more frequently than is even required (every 5,000km). Am I right in assuming there are no grease nipples under the vehicle? I've never been able to find them and I've assumed they are all sealed units? Am I correct? In otherwords, there is nothing to "lube" with a grease gun under there is there??
Thanks...and looking forward to any replies!!

Hey guys, I'm looking to change the bulbs in the overhead lights in my santa fe, the two by the clock and glasses holder, the main overhead lights, and then the small light over the trunk area. I'm mainly interested in doing this because I want to change the bulb color to give a little bit of a unique twist to the cabin. I can't seem to figure out how to access the lights though, am I going to have to remove the top paneling/material to be able to access them? I don't even have any idea of how to begin going at the lights by the clock.
Also I am interested in installing a short ram air intake in my truck, but im not familiar with any brands that will fit it. I don't really trust looking online because ive had a poor experience ordering a short ram before that didnt fit my last last vehicle. Has anyone done a similar mod in yours? And if you have could you tell me what you used and how its working out for ya? Im only 18 and its kinda hard for me to afford this thing as it is cause of the escalating gas prices, but i love it so i dont want to give it up.

2006 Sante Fe with about 20,000 miles. CEL light is on for P0130-O2 Sensor Circuit Malfunction (Bank 1 Sensor 1).
Thats the 02 sensor before the cat right? Its the one that you see when the hood is open and you look at the exhaust mainfold.
Would this be covered under warranty? Thanks

My SF is white with the standard grey lower trim- I believe it is grey on most two-tone models. I picked up touch-up paint from the dealer based on the vehicle paint codes. The white matches perfectly, however the grey touch-up is much darker than the existing grey. I also notice that no matter how long you let it dry, when you go over it with the clear coat is rubs off on the clear coat touch-up applicator tip. Any one use any other color or have any suggestions?

When I purchased this Santa Fe new, the clutch did not engage until it was almost completely depressed. The mechanic said he would adjust it. He did that and it then engaged about a quarter way up, which I was happy with. Its three years later and now when the clutch is fully pressed while in gear the auto keeps moving. Is there something that needs to be readjusted or is this a major problem?

Oh where do I start. 2003 Santa Fe, V6 Auto, FWD.
The engine has been making a loud ticking noise lately, starting right after an oil change it seemed. It actually sounded a lot like a stuck lifter, so I had an engine flush done, but this did not remedy the problem. Popping the hood one day it was particularly noisy, I noticed that it sounded like it was coming from the serpentine belt tensioner (or there abouts).
Anyway, tonight, *something* finally gave. All of a sudden I heard a squealing noise, then smelled burning rubber, and my battery light came on, and I lost my power steering. I figured that the tensioner finally gave out.
I turned off the vehicle to see what I could see. A bit of melted S-belt was it. I restarted it, and the belt was turning fine again, but while it was idling, I noticed that the crank pulley was shifting in and out now and then. When it moved inward, the S-belt shifted in as well, and started to rub on the timing cover, wearing a hole right through it! Have a look at the attached photo, showing the grove worn right through.

So I'm assuming that my tensioner was fine, and it was my crank pulley all a long. I'm figuring that 3 thing will need replacing:
1. Crank Pulley (the source of the problem)
2. Serpentine Belt (since it's probably half melted)
3. Timing Cover (can't see that water getting in there would be good)
Does this sound accurate?
This is my first post, so I thank all of you experts for chiming in with your 2 cents.
Cheers,
Ray

Thought I needed an alignment but found out the lower-control bolt was rusted out of the subframe. The 2001 SanteFE has only 39,000 miles on it. I'm paying for it we need the car. $2400.00 bucks! But I'm going to proceed to go through Hyundai and attempt to get reimbursed. I'm starting with their 800 number upon the advice of a Kia dealership owner. Anyone else have any similar experience? With the rust, reimbursement? Thank you.

I bought my 2003 SF back at the end of Feb. Love the way it handled in the winter here in the New York. Problem was though, I have a steep driveway, no issues going up, but when backing down the driveway, all four tires locked, and I was still sliding down the driveway. These are the original tires (Goodyear) with great tread left on them. What kind of tires do you find to be a great all-season option for winter, and or, what winter tires do you use/recommend?

I have read a few posts from people asking for advice on how to replace the front wheel studs.
My 03 AWD Santa Fe is apart at the moment and there is no way that the studs can be knocked out with the hub in place.
I have removed the caliper assembly, rotor and hub nut and fabricated a slide hammer to try and remove the hub assembly. It will not budge and I don't want to hit it any harder if I am missing something.
Does the retaining snap ring behind the hub stop it pulling off or are they just very, very tight?
The snap ring can't be removed without removing the driveshaft so it just keeps getting harder.
Any advice from anyone that has removed the front hubs would be appreciated.
I am trying to fit longer 'NICE S3400' studs so that I can run 8mm spacers and give me clearance to fit my snowchains on my 245/70x16 Bridgestone D694 All Terrain tyres.
Cheers Bruce
