Hello all. I have an '03 sonata with 52000 miles, and there is a new noise, which I suspect is a brake pad warning noise ( a slight whining sound when the brakes are NOT being applied), my question is, do I need to rush to get new pads, or do I have a little time before it's metal to metal? Thanks for any help.

I have run into what many others have-either my input/output sensor or my throttle sensor,or both according to one response, have blown.
If you've had this problem and taken it to the dealer to fix,how much did it cost you?
One poster said their dealer asked 600,is that pretty much what Im lookin at?
I also saw one poster fixed it himself for 200,parts included, but i havent seen them on ebay,so Im probably gonna hafta use the dealer
thanks for any help

Hi All,
I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. I recently took it to a car repair center due to a loss in power. They informed me that the catalytic converters were bad and would need to be replaced. The total cost would be approx. $3000, with 120,000 miles on the car I was not interested. So I have decided to try and make it a DIY project. I have a couple questions….
1. Are there really 3 catalytic converters on this model? (one of the front three cylinders, one on the rear three cylinders, and one in the back)?
2. The bolts are rusted together and I cannot get them to turn. I have tried hammering on smaller sockets and using WD-40……what is next?
3. Any other suggestions or thoughts?

My 2000 Sonata V6 is having a lot of problems. Shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear seems to be a large problem, most of the time it will simply not do it, and I have to let off the gas, and let back on and it will correct itself and keep going. I get very random kickbacks from the car when shifting into other gears, and sometimes it will simply start and then die right away, or just not start, and I have to pump the gas to get it to go.
Also, when I'm idling in drive while brakeing or in park, it will die and give me a lot of trouble starting again.
Any advice?

Hi there! My dashboard trunk-open indicator light in my 2000 Sonata started staying on a few weeks ago and won't turn off. An independent repair shop, and then the dealer checked and had trouble finding the problem. Even with the trunk switch disconnected, the light stays on. It flickers while driving, and will go on and off depending on whether the car is moving from accellerating or braking, etc. When stopped (even with engine off) or cruising, the light stays on. Something is shorting out, but even the dealer is not 100% sure where. He says he wants to replace the "fuse block" and the "EATC" alarm and clock module (even though car has no alarm) to the tune of about $1500.
Has anyone else had this problem? I had the engine and clutch and some other parts replaced last month and I'm wondering if something happened to the wiring when the dealer did all this major surgery. It's insane to have to spend $1500 for something like this so I want to avoid it if all possible. That may be 'new hybrid' time for me. I'm wondering if the dealer is just guesstimating where the problem may lie and wants to start replacing parts.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also, does anyone know a good auo electrical diagnosis shop in the Chicago area?
Thanks!!!!!

I have a 2000 Sonota . Approximately 4 years ago the paint on my hood (near the front) started to bubble and rust. And it was not due to any exterior paint surface chipping. It turned out that the seams along the bottom side of the hood allowed water to enter and be captured. The rusting is more prominent Snow Belt / New England regions where salt is used to melt the ice/snow during the winter months. I had my local Hyundai service manager take a look at the rusting and asked him to communicate with the District Parts and Service Manager (D.P.S.M) requesting Hyundai to replace my hood regardless of my expired warranty. I also took some close up digital photos and sent to the Service manager who in turn sent them to the DPSM. As a result, I received a new hood free of charge. It’s now 4 years later and I have the same problem. Here I go again… Wish me luck trying to get a second replacement hood.
Has anyone else had this problem? What did you do about it?
Regards,
Carl

About a month ago i worked on my 98 sonata and afterwards i had to take it to inspection and it failed because the struts were bad and the emissions was not in ready mode.i fixed the struts and drive the car for 200 miles and took it back but it still failed. i put in on my scanner and it said it was still pending. so confused i called the dealer and they told me there weren't sure it could be any where from 200 to 600 miles. i said ok weird they don't know but whatever. so now it has over 1200 miles on the car. it failed twice and come Monday if it fails again i got big issues cuz i prolly can't drive the car. i was hoping someone here could tell me what or how to get the car into ready mode by Monday.

I got this 1998 sonata this past April and first the dash custer gauge light stop working but that OK cause I don't drive at night and now today the tail light are messing up. I get no voltage reading on left rear wiring, I have no fuse for the tails lights under dash driver side, found one under the hood but if the right side works that fuse must be OK? Is there another one that seperates the left from the right?

Hi,
I bought a 2000 Hyundai Sonata a couple weeks ago it has about 87k on it.
There's been a problem with it stalling out especially when breaking or idling.
I don't think it's a serious problem like transmission, it may be something with the wiring.
Because when i turn on the cd player is when the check engine light comes on.
The cd player reads an error 2 and then the check engine light turns on.
I really have no car experience so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.

Hey guys i am a noob and i am on here to trying to get some questions answered because my girlfriend owns a 2000 sonata and he hates it but im trying to fix it up so she can keep it. I went to the junkyard and basically got a whole car for 100 . anyways, she has a automatic 2.4 liter 4 cylinder and when you go wot the car wont switch gears unless you let go of the gas and step on it again, is this the transmission or is the computers on the car just restricting it?

Hey Guys!
I am from India. I will be getting a pre-owned 2.7L V6 (GLS EF2) Sonata soon. My main aim of buying this vehicle is that it is one of the most powerful here in India. We do not have the tiburon.
Now, i want to do a transmission swap, as only the auto trans is offered here with this engine spec. However the 2.0L (EF2) Sonata is also offered with a manual trans. I was wondering if the trans from this car will fit?
Also, i can import the 2.7L Tiburon 6 speed manual trans. Again, will it fit?
Any other options?
Thanks so much!

Hi
I just returned from a trip and before i left i put my car in a parking lot where i payed for it to be waxed and washed and full sirvice and all that. I have a Sonata 2002 and when i got back i pop the trunk open put all my stuff in open the drivers door get in close the door and the driver side window falls in to the door. Well i try to close it but all i hear is some sound in the door and the window doesnt move at all so i had to stick a screwdriver in the door to hold it. Opened the door took the whole thing apart just to see that the wire that pulls the window up and down is cut in to half but the mechanisam that holds the window is still ok i think and i hear the motor turning when i try to close or open.
I would just like to know if replacing that wire is possible or do i have to replace the whole mechanisam for the window and if possible does anyone have any instructions how to do this.I guess i will spend my day off tomorrow going to securitas and trying to charge them for the repair since when i left the car was in good condition and it all worked fine. Any help would be good thanks in advance

Hi
I know this is a strange question but how hard would it be to install an AC in to a 2002 sonata with a 2l engine? Also if its possible to get all the parts that i would need to buy to do this would be a lot of help. My car doesnt have AC and its only at 90k KM and runs really good so i am thinking why not install the AC and keep the car four a couple of years more.

I have a 2001 Hyundai Sonata with 88K, new tires, new tranny, everything good so far until a month ago when i started my car and let it heat up for like 2 minutes then began driving i got to a yellow light and i picked up speed a bit to make the light then the car lagged trying to change gears and made a hard jerky movement and it felt as if i was losing the gas pedal. Also that same jerky movent happened on the HWY i picked up speed from 65 to 80 while doing that i got the same jerky movement. It feels bad, it feels as if i were to be pressing the brakes hard and letting it go really fast. Any ideas what this might be? thanx.

Recently, my 2004 Sonata has been hard to start after getting gas. I am not filling the tank when I go to the gas station. Put in about 6 gallons last time I went. I verify that the cap is being put on correctly. When I try to start, it runs very rough and then stalls. Eventually I get it started. It will start fine everytime after that until I go to the gas station again and put a few gallons in the tank.

Hi,
I have a 2003 Sonata GLS w/ 2.7L V6.
The last three times I have refeuled, it was hard to get it restarted.
It would start and idle very rough then die. This happened several times. I had to keep the RPMs up so it wouldn't die out on me.
After this initial problem, the car will start and run fine until I have to get gas again.
It only occurs when I refuel...If I'm at home or work, she'll fire up fine. Any thoughts?
TIA
Bob

It doesnt do it when I am parked only when driving say more than 10 miles per hour. Before it would do it on and off but now it makes the noise all the time. Could anyone please help me tell me what may be the problem.

Hello All-
I have a 2001 Sonata that has the same TPS sensor issue everyone is talking about. Need to replace that soon. The real issue right now is the A/C.
It blows hot air. This happened a year ago and I recharged the a/c and all was fine. Today, I went to recharge and the PSI was 150+. There was a warning on the bottle that states there is an issue up in that range.
Any idea what the issue could be and how to fix? When I did recharge the system last year, the PSI was in normal limits and fine when I was done.
Any help would be appreciated as we are moving in 2 weeks and really dont have the cash to take it to the dealer. and.........it has been 90-100 degrees lately. oh and btw - its the wifes car - its all I hear about.

Hello, all. My first post.
EDIT> That's supposed to say "Odd vibration" in the subheading.
I’ve got a 2001 Sonata 2.4L with 155K miles. A couple of weeks ago, the car started doing something new. At all speeds there was a slight growling sound, and at high rpms, just before the AT shifts, I can feel the vibration in the steering wheel *and* the gas pedal. Then the rpms kick down and the vibration diminishes.
I took it in to a mechanic, found out that fully ¼ of the teeth on my timing belt were gone! Ach! Dear God! I should’ve pushed it to his shop!
Luckily no more that six in a row, and it hadn’t broken, so that disaster was narrowly avoided. The belt, by the way, had 48K miles on it and the problem seems to be that the plastic cover had warped inward and was rubbing the edge of the belt. Stacked washers up now hold the cover out.
I got the car back, and while the noise from the timing belt has diminished, that vibration is still there at the shifts. While driving it seems to come from right in front of me.
When I stand outside the idling car, looking under the hood, I can hear the sound but can’t seems to figure out where it’s coming from. Revving the engine in park doesn’t cause it, which sorta makes me think it might be transmission related. It is *not* the power steering pump.
Anybody have any similar experience? The timing belt experience has me a bit skittish about letting my wife drive it while it’s making this noise, but we don’t have much of a choice.
Odd thing I noticed last night that is probably unrelated: The catalytic converter was ticking when I shut the car off, like it was really hot. I've not noticed this before.
Thanks in advance.
Moore. Matt Moore.

I removed the 4 axil hub mounting bolts from the backing plate but I cannot remove the hub and bearing assembly from the brake assembly housing. There is a lagre nut with a small crimp in it on the back side of the housing, does that need to be removed or is the assembly just stuck? Thanks.

Hey,Im looking to pick up a TPS and was wondering if anyone has found a relatively cheap one.I got my one input sensor for a few bucks from a junkyard, but none in the area have sonatas,so I figured Id order online.Dont really care if its Hyundai certified or not(Im selling the car, figured Id give the repair one last shot since the old problem is back)
The cheapest Ive seen is around 50bucks.
Anybody know a good parts site or does anyone on the forums have one they want to sell?

Hi there! I have some strange problems with my 92,000 mi 2000 GL 2.4 4-cyl manual Sonata -- a few weeks ago I had the engine block replaced & valve job done under warranty (car burned oil from day 1). Soon after getting the car back, it started having major problems with hesitation. You would be cruising along and then all of a sudden, the engine power would drop significantly, then if you pressed the gas or you did nothing and a few seconds went by, the power would kick back up. No warning lights went on. The problem disappeared in a few days. When I took the car back to the dealer, they said there were no problems found and no codes. They said no TSBs they knew of. A week or so after that, the battery died. It was several years old. I had the car jump started and I left it at my parents before I left to go out of town. AAA came and diagnosed a bad cell in the Hyundai Interstate battery. So I picked up a new battery at Sams Club before coming home when I then installed it. The same thing started -- you would get hit with these hesitation "events." over and over while driving. Then, a few days later, it stopped and the car ran fine. THEN.... I took the temporary battery back once I was able to get a new battery of the proper size (Hyundais take an odd size battery model that has a lip for a retaining bracket....). The people who put in that new battery said the alternator was giving normal output readings. Lo and behold, after I left the shop and for a few days after, the same thing happened with the hesitation. It has since gone away. The engine now runs beautifully, better than it ever has, and the idle is finally glass-smooth.
Does anyone have a clue as to what may be going on with this problem? I'm not even going to speculate.
Also, one more little thing -- a few days ago the dashboard "trunk open" light started flickering on and is now stuck on -- unless when I'm accelerating, then it goes off. Any ideas?

I have a 2003, 2.0 Sonata GLS.
Im interested to install a NGV conversion.
I do have some questions :
1. Will it be compatible and suitable for the car?
2. Any potential issues?
3. any special areas that need to be looked at?
4. any issues with engine sensors effecting drivability and performance (other than the reduced performance of NGV itself)
5. Any other advise?
Thanks

long story short my car died and when i got it all apart i found the crank sensor was ruined and the balance belt was just a belt, no teeth. timing belt was fine and new though. does a broken balance have the same effects as a broken timing belt or is it just a matter of getting a new one and thats all. im not replacing my motor for the 3rd time.

I have a SOnata GLS 2.0 AUTO, 4 cyl yr 2003 with 84000km.
I have recently come across a weird issue with the engine. The Symptons are as such :
On start - everything is fine
After travelling a short while - engine looses power
multiple symptons :
1. Increase Rev fast to 4000 - 4500RPM RPM whilst cruising at 2000RPM
> gear drops, but there is little driving power
2. Step on paddle at 1000RPM> Engine struggles to reach 2000RPM. Step on paddle further, Engine flutters and RPM Drops to approx 1500.
No ENgine Check Lights
Sent to Hyundai Service and hookep up with Diag Computer - No Error code
The above happens intermittently
When the above occurs, i would switch off the engine and turn back on after 10 secs, and everything returns to normal for a short while till it acts up again.
Notice this has just started after I removed my fuel tank and repaired a crack on the tank. Checked all connections to Fuel pump and everything is ok. All hoses fitted in properly. No more fuel leaks.
Please advise.

I want to upgrade my website, which is especially for the Elantra J1, but I want to invite the Sonata EF drivers as well (until 1993).
Would it be possible to send mir informations, pictures aso. about the car? Maybe, you know which parts from the Elantra and Sonata are the same?
Don't hesitate to contact me, you'll find my mail address at www.lantraj1.de

NO: It's Sonata Y2, not EF. My fault, sorry

hey, i just got a 2002 sonata and i want to make the handling better. it seems too soft while cornering. i was thinking about getting some lowering springs. will that help to firm up that soft feel a little? can you use them with your existing shock absorbers?
im assuming these ones would work with my car but they're so expensive compared to some of the others around:
http://www.kspec.com/list.php?ac_id=17&ai_id=1984can anyone recommend anything cheaper that would work with my car? or anything else i can do to improve the handling? thanks.

I just bought a 2003 Sonata and the only real problem with it is the trunk won't lock. It closes all the way but then you can just pull up and it opens right up. Doesn't seem like anything is bent, and I can't see where the former owner messed with it by adjusting screws or anything like that. That lever with the spring on it seems pretty stiff but it looks like its supposed to be that way.
Any ideas?
