I'm looking to buy either a 2005 Honda Accord or a 2005 Hyundai Sonata GLS V6. It seems like the Hyundai Sonata gives more features for less and that it is not as bad as I thought it would be. I would like to get some opinions about the safety, fuel economy and reliability of the vehicle. I have a honda Accord right now and it does not have many problems and has been pretty reliable for the 12 years I've had this vehicle, I would like to know if a Hyundai can last as long or at least a decent amount of time. Also which model should I get a Sonata GLS V6 or a LX?

I am the owner of a 1998 Sonata GL, with week windows and doors.
Never had an engine problem. Never had a transmission problem.
Each power window has went at least twice.
Since I'll be doing all reasonable futur repairs, I hope tomake friends with all the mechanical GENIUSES in the neighborhood.

I have a 2001 Sonata with 121K on it. Tonight, (my wife was driving it so this is second hand) the car seemed to slip into nuetral. Although In Drive the RPM's raced while the car went no where, then, as she was limping it off the highway the engine completly died and would not restart.
The engine turns over with the starter but it has lost fire. I had it into the dealer last month, (while I still had warranty on it) for shifting problems. They determined that the speed sensor was bad. I replaced it and some of the problems did stop but not all and now, this.
I am wondering if it could be another tranny sensor gone bad and would the Computer shut the engine down to avoid further damage?
I can attest to the wonderful response of the Hyundai Roadside Assistance. They were polite, helpful and considerate. I wish I were as impressed with the Sonata.

I recently purchase a 1996 Sonata 2.0GLS with 90000km's on the clock. The car is in EXCELLENT condition and has a full service History. One minor problem that I have is that when I put the car in D and depress the brake, the steering shakes badly. I have this problem when stopping at the traffic lights and it doesn't matter whether the car is warm or cold. When the car is in P there is no shaking. What is the problem?

OK, one more complaint about my otherwise perfect 2004 Sonata - Every time I get out of the car, when I put my hand on the top of the door to close it, I get a really nasty static electric shock. Sometimes I wait a second or two before touching and sometimes that helps, but not always.
I am sure it is from rubbing across the seat as I exited the car because it happens even if the care hasn't moved.
Anyone else have a similar experience? Any solutions? Seat covers? insulated gloves? Copper soles for my shoes?

does anyone know where i can download a manual for 2000 sonata?
i've been searching thru hyundai's main site, as well as google,
and the only thing i can find is random spots to order the hard copy.
my car is nearing 100k miles, so at this point i'd like to review any
items the manual suggests repairing/replacing, which i havn't
already.
my car has had very few problems, but i feel like the
moment that dial hits 100k, the whole thing might blow up.
i'd be happy to hear any suggestions anyone might have.

I am having difficulty finding the fuel filter on my 2002 Sonata LX. The dealer says that there is one in the tank only, and it doesn't need to be changed until 100k miles. However, my owner's manual states that it needs replaced at 52,500 miles. I want to replace it, so I don't run into warranty issues. The shop manual shows a picture of an inline filter (not an in tank one), but doesn't specifically state where it is located.
Any help is appreciated.

My friend hase a 97 sonata automatic with a 2 l engine. He started having problems wih the transmition. The car shifts only to first and second gear. You can go as fast as you want in the second but if you go too fast around 70 and you let go of the gas you get a huge hit form the tansmition. He wnt to hyundai and they did a computer test. There are two codes. The first is 86.GEAR SYSTEM-FAIL and the second is 53.THIRD GEAR SYSTEM-MALFUNCTION.
Does this mean that he needs to get a new unit or is a repair possible. Can it be a sensor or some electrical problem. Please help.

ok just recently my 97 hyundai sonota has been having problems. soemtimes when you stop it shakes and when your driving it dosent want to pick up speed unless you force the petal down. 3 people have drove it and they said it sounds like a plug or spark plug wire has gone bad or shorted. i took it to the dealer and they said plugs are fine and they sprayed the cables down. and it does it at the weirdest times. today its in the shop for the second tiem. they pouneded out the catacyl convertor and put a new fuel filter in. oil is changed every 3k and new battery in in. after i got it back ran fine, till i hit the michigan border then ran like one plug gooing bad or something. This is the second time its been in shop please someone help me find out whats wrong. car has worked like a dream with reguaral maintenece done to it. had 137k miles on it. i dont really trust the people at the shop.
Thanks

My Sonata V6 has had some problems accelerating (Maxxing out at 55MPH, no joke). I scanned for codes and got nothing... took it to a mechanic who told me my ecm is probably done. It is using fixed values and ignoring all the (reportedly working) sensors in the engine compartment. It had recently been reprogrammed for the MAF Recall by the dealer.
First, is there something specific that if fixed will allow my computer to opperate normally (e.g. Crank Angle Sensor, Fuel Filter/Pump)? Is there any way to force the computer into open loop?
If my desktop computer at work were to fail we would have the IT guy come format the hard-drive and reinstall the software. Is there an equivalent with my ECM?
And my mechanic (a real stand up guy) says that its possible that when the dealership reflashed my ecm for the recall that is what caused the ecm to go to closed loop. How does this argument hold water?

It was 11:30 at night and i was driving my new sonata home and i nailed a deer on the passenger side.

So i skid to a stop and i franticly run out of the the car only to see a dead deer under the bumper. I'm in the middle of nowhere and i called the cops and it took over 45 minutes for them to get there only to tell me it was safe for me to drive home.
I did not keep the deer, they asked me if i wanted to...it was killed instantly, i feel so bad
Here are the results:

it shattered the headlight

notice the hair....

the hood is very bent (its closed right now) the passenger door will not open

Hello:
I have a 2004 Sonata V6 which gets me compliments daily! It has 4700 miles on it and twice since buying new it did the following. Today while on the highway, the car jerked for about 2-3 seconds when it felt as though the car simply shut down! It felt as though someone had pulled the battery cable off for just a second. The car was fine after the occurance. This has happened twice over the past few months. Anyone have the same problem?
Thank you, your help is appreciated.

We just purchased a 2004 Sonata with an automatic tranny. I know on some cars there's a button for engaging and disengaging the overdrive - is there one on mine, and if so, where is it ? I thought there would be a light or something on the dash that would light-up showing what the status of it is.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,
I'm having problems with paint peeling from my rear door handles on my 2002 Sonata LX. I placed an order for (4) new door handles from kspec.com. The door handles are chrome, and the bases come pre-painted in the factory OEM colors. The problem I am having is that KSpec emailed me and said they do not have my color code available in Korea.
My color code is 'BX', which is Brilliant Silver (or Bright Silver). Does anybody know what color is the same or similiar in Korea? I would really like to get these handles for my car, but if the paint doesn't match, it will look very tacky.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I just bought a 2000 Sonata last week and started having problems a few days later. Getting on the freeway, trying to accelerate, won't go past 40 mph, rpm running high, didn't stop, pulled to the side and kept going, further down, I put it in Nuetral and then back into drive and no more problems. It seemed to me as it wasn't shifting. Didn't happen again. I wanted it looked at before my 15 days were up and the dealer said they got it to duplicate the problem, it even died on them they say it's the crank sensor, how are the tranny and sensor related?
Thanks Amanda

Hi everyone,
My 2001 Sonata needs a fusible link and cable for the battery. Is it possible to get this through auto parts stores? Do I have to go through the dealership? Is anyone familiar with the pricing of the part and labor for this type of job?
I was told our fusible link (the box connected to the battery on the alternator wire) was destroyed (melted, actually) because the wire was bad and burnt it out.
I appreciate any advice.
Thank you,
Bonnie

First I'd like to say hello to all.
Second, I just recently bought a '00 Sonata GLS although I am finding that over time it has had major problems merging on the highway since sometimes I cant get it to accelerate past 60 until I am going down hill
I have done some research into possible problems, and it has had its computer reprogrammed for the MAF sensor Recall. I am down to 2 possible problems Fuel Filter or Crank Angle Sensor.
My question is:
Are there any other glaringly obvious problems that I have overlooked???

Being in New England, it handles OK in snow and rain. I don't feel as connected to the road as I have with my past vehicles, when it comes to heavy in-climate weather.

I bought my Sonata just over a year ago and it has been absolutely perfect. I have not had to take it back at all for repair work.
My only complaint is that the steering seems to pull ever so slightly to the right, even if I am driving in the left lane.
Since it so minor, I haven't felt the need to take it in just for that, figuring I'd wait until something else went wrong, but I'm still waiting for something else to go wrong.
Any similar experiences with steering "problems?"

1998 Sonata Gl
2.0L 4Cyl
I recently had a problem with the car, When I was Reversing the Sonata shut off on me. And I was able to restart the car and then once again when I put it in reverse it shut off. Then it did not restart after that. I changed the Battery Terminals. Nothing. Then changed the Battery (new), nothing. Pulled the starter all ok five different checks on it compared to a new one(remanufactured). Changed the Starter Relay located on the Eng Relay Comp Box. Still nothing.
Now this morning I hooked up voltmeter for the battery and it was drained again. Now I am thinking it is a short from the Relay box in the engine compartment to the Ign switch? Or I am I just overlooking the Transaxle Range Switch? any Ideas or any available techs to help out - greatly appreaciated!

We have a brand new 2005 Sonata GL (4 cyl) on which the wiper motor/drive mechanism is noisy - the faster it goes the noisier it gets. The next part is really interesting... when the radio is on (AM band - I didn't check the FM yet) the radio picks up the noise and amplifies it!
Suggests to me that its something about the wiper motor thats wrong.
Or is the motor noise normal, and there's something wrong with the radio that it picks up interference?
Does anyone else find the wiper motor noisy on their Sonata?
Thanx

I was given the wrong plugs at a parts house.
I just removed the wrong spark plugs from my wife's car. It is a V6. The front 3 sparks all hit the piston, it bent the prong almost all the way down, but there is still a small gap. You can shine a light into the hole and see shinney spot on the top of the piston. The 3 in the back did not hit. I knew it felt like something was wrong when I screwed the front spark plugs in. They tightened up and then seem loose again so I screwed them till they were tight.
The wrong plugs were .100 longer than the correct ones and they have a taper shank instead of the washer seal.
Do you think any damaged accured from this. I only drove my car approx. 50 or 60 miles.
What would you suggest I say when I show the plugs to the Auto Parts tomorrow?
I'm sorry for making all my post so long. I have learnt many lessons with this problem.

I bought a 2005 Sonata GL 4 cylinder in November 2004. It had a chirping/whining noise when I test drove it. Thinking it was just a belt whine, I bought the car anyway. I have since had the car in for service 6 times to repair this noise. Today was the last time and I was told the noise is normal. This is after having had the cam shaft gear replaced twice and also the belts that were wearing due to the gear being bent and out of alignment. Does anyone else have this same noise? It is driving me crazy. The only time it can't be heard is when I am driving at highway speed (70+).

Hello everyone,
My name is Rick and I am a newbie to the board.
My 2001 Hyundai Sonata recently went down for the count after the timing belt broke (but somehow stayed superficially intact). The engine valves broke and it was recommended that I get a new engine.
<b>Cost :$2000 </b>
Since I am likely to keep the car, I wanted an aftermarket manual to help me do my own repairs. Yet the only 01 Sonata manual I can find is $75 for a "shop service repair manual" by Hyundai themselves. I question how readable such a manual will be for an inexperienced at-home mechanic.
On the other hand, I found a 96-2001 Elantra "Shop Service Repair Manual" by Haynes for $18.
Does anyone know if the Elantra manual will suffice for my car? Thank you mucho.

I wish I had know about your message board earlier...
I was kind of proud of myself today... I was able to change the spark plugs & Wires on my 2000 Hyundai Sonata 6 cyl. without to much problem. I did everything correct... but I still have a slight miss/surge when stopped in drive. The only thing I did wrong was not use recommended plugs. I used "Autolite Double Platinum APP5364" plugs. Was all my work done in vain? Do you see any problem using these or do I need to redo everything?
Thanks for your input...

Sorry for this dumb question, but for some reason I'm not able to find answers anywhere else. I know this is trivial, and won't weigh into my decision to purchase the car...
Owners of the 2000 Sonata - What color are the instruments at night? I've only test driven the car during the daytime, and I can tell the needle is either red or orange, but what color(s) do the rest of the gauge faces use (MPH numbers, etc.)? I know it's silly but I'm a sucker for cool colors, and quite bored with the plain white light that my 92 Civic features.
Anybody that wastes their time answering this, I'm extremely grateful.
