For the past few weeks I have been trialling a tuning box manufactured by a German company ASA Autotechnik Saretz and I have compiled the attached report giving details of my findings. Should you want more info from me contact via a personal email and I will try to answer those questions posed.
A really special price to forum members has been negotiated with ASA Autotechnik Saretz who can offer a Tuning box, plus appropriate connecting cable complete and delivered to your door for an all-inclusive Special price of € 99 plus shipping costs of €10 to the UK. (A total of €109)
Members in other Countries should check shipping costs prior to purchasing but I have been advised that they will be as reasonable as is possible)
Please Note: -
This is a considerable saving on the regular ASA Autotechnik Saretz Internet price of €148 plus postage.
This is the best available offer on the Internet. Contact them by Email to order at
shop@autotechnik-saretz.de ENGLISH is spoken and understood.
When ordering please quote reference Itza/ASA ECO CR/Special Offer
If you have another vehicle that has any other type of diesel engine, ASA Autotechnik Saretz possibly manufacture a tuning device for that as well so contact them to see what they can offer you.

I have 91K on my '03 Sonata 2.7 and I'm thinking about changing plugs. My manual gives part numbers for NGK and Champion plugs but the local AutoZone has neither. Their database suggests other numbers of Platinum plugs. Have numbers changed since 03 or what. I looked online and found the listed plugs for 12.99 ea at parts Geek? I was planning on paying maybe 3 bucks per plug instead of 13 bucks.
Question #2.
My fuel mileage is usually around 27 mpg hiway EXCEPT when I have the opportunity to drive a lot faster and then at speeds of 80+ mph it's usually over 30 - one time it was 34. This defies all scientific data but it has actually happened many times on long trips between Dallas and Detroit. Any ideas? No this is not a Joke!! Yes, I am an older citizen, a biker and still have the need for speed but the mileage just does not add up.
Thanks,
Lee

Hey all,
I have an error code that indicates that my Shift Solenoid is bad. It's also saying that the speed sensor is bad. But as I've replaced the speed sensor 2 times already I'm finding that hard to believe. The guy at Auto Zone said that the it may be throwing the speed sensor error because of the Shift Solenoid.
I put the car in Reverse and step on the gas and it doesn't move, also the shifting isn't right. It shifts really hard after starting out. It feels like it starts out in second gear and then shifts to third but doesn't seem to get past that. So if I try to get up to say 55 the RPM's are really high.
Does anyone know if this is something that is really involved to change? I'm no great auto mechanic but I can do some stuff. Also any ideas on the price for a new Shift Solenoid? I tried to call the local Hyundai Dealer and they would only tell me that they really couldn't give me a price until I brought it in and had them run diagnostics. That's dealer lingo for "we want to charge you $80 to tell you that you need a new Shift Solenoid..." Something I already know. Just wondering how much I might be investing into getting this fixed. I mean it's a 2001 with 147K Miles on it. I don't want to put to much into it.
If anyone has any info on how much and how involved this is please let me know.
Thanks,
Josh

Hey all,
I know the sonata uses only the sp3 type fluid by mitsubishi/hyundai but I noticed that Castrol makes a import atf. I read the back of the bottle and it says recommended for mitsubishi.
Anyone use this? or does anyone have any opinions on this.

I went to change my spark plugs for the first time today (has 70K miles total, a little overdue). Low and behold I only found (and replaced) 2 spark plugs. I called a neighbor over to check (my owners manual doesn't mention a specific number), and he also could find no more than 2.
Did we mess up?
It's a 2.4L, 2003 Hyundai Sonata (not a V6 version).

I am considering purchasing a 2004 V6 Sonata. The dealer is asking for $7300; I am hopeful to get him down to closer to $6500. It currently has 45K miles on it. The Carfax indicates one owner and no wrecks, salvage, etc. I checked it out today, and it did well on test drive and looks about as good as you can expect a ~5 year-old car to look. I'm going to have my mechanic check it out tomorrow morning.
I have a couple of questions for forum-dwellers. (Just by browsing these forums I've learned so much.)
(1) Would you try to buy an 06-09 model instead? Obviously, they are about $4K to $5K more. Though I can't afford to pay cash for them, I might be able to get my parents to loan me the $, so I can pay them back rather than the bank, if it seems really different.
(2) We currently have a 2002 Kia Optima, 5 speed. It's got 106,000 miles on it, and I've had it since it had 16,000 miles on it. It's been an incredible money pit. I know that Sonatas and Optimas are the same car, but I'm not sure to what extent. Any help on this would be much appreciated. From what I've read Sonata owners are much more pleased with their cars than Optima owners. Still, I'm nervous about buying a car that is only 2 years newer than my current car.
(3) This is an automatic transmission car, and I am a manual devotee, mainly because of cost of maintenance. Have there been particular problems with the Sonata's auto tranny? I am very nervous about going back to automatics.
(4) If you respond before tomorrow morning, is there anything particular you would suggest the mechanic check out? After owning the Optima, I know to have him check the timing belt, but would appreciate any other suggestions.
I could care less about aesthetics. I just want a reliable car that I don't have to put in about $2500/year in maintenance, which is what I have been putting into the Kia. (Don't get me started.)
Thanks for any help you can offer!!!!!!

Hi All
I really like older Hondas and am only helping a freind out here ............
My freind is looking at a very nice 05 Sonata with 40K on, it had all required maintenence service done on it and the lady is asking only $7000 for it and he hopes to get it for 6500 or so. It supposedly is in excellent shape inside and out.
This seems a very good deal (judging from others I looked at) to me BUT they don't seem to hold their value like a Honda and I'm not sure a car like this will go 200-300K like a Honda would?
I had lots of Honda's and my 94 Accord wagon, with a 156K on still rides (no rattles at all) and runs like new, does the 05 Sonata seem like it will hold up in the same manner 14 years from now ?
I am very open minded and would appeciate your knowledge on the 05 Sonata and what things to look out for in the future that they are known to have problems with.
The Hyundai's are getting much nicer as the years go on but I'd still rather have a older Honda with double the mileage since the Hyundai's are not proven (at least to my knowledge) to last that long.
If you didn't own a Accord, still free to reply, all comments welcomed !

Hello, Hyundai family I own a 2000 sonata v6 and I'm having water problems when it rains and the car is parked.
Underneath is about 5 or 6 gallons of water, I can hear it slushing around when I take off or brake going 20-30 mph.
I have no idea how the water is getting in, but once in it takes about 1-1/2 - 2 weeks to find a way out.
This is just on the passenger side of the car, and just the floor of the front and back, no door panels is wet,
no seats are wet, the header around the sunroof is not wet, the foot rest under the dash board is not wet, and even the walls along the side of the seats aren't wet.
1)any ideas on how the water is getting in the car
2)how do I get the out from undeneath the floor, is their a drain plug or something to open up to let the water out
Anyone else have this problem, if so ((PLEASEEEEE HELPPPPP)) all help is greatly welcomed and valued
THANKS in ADVANCE

Hi, hope someone can help me solve this.
Once the engine is warm the idle speed begins to slowly increase to over 1000rpm. It does this until it reaches about 1500rpm where it then begins to cycle between 1500 to 2500rpm.
Needless to say this is rather disconcerting when driving.
If I disconnect the idle air valve located next to the throttle sensor the surging stops but the idle remains quite high at over 1000rpm. Reconnecting the IAC the surging resumes.
I've removed and cleaned the IAC but to no avail. From the sounds of things it may be the signal to the valve and not the valve itself. However it could be that the IAC is opening too far (it is a stepper motor I assume) and the engine then turns it off when the idle speed goes too high, thus causing the surges.
I've also done the battery disconnect/reset thing and that hasn't worked either.
Strangely no check engine light comes on at this time either, which is what I would have expected if thee was faulty sensor somewhere.
Any ideas?

I have a 2002 Sonata V6. I have a Pinhole leak in one of the hoses. It is under the car on the frame rail. It is in the metal part of a line at the lowest part of the bend. There is a piece of rubber that slides over this area for protection...
Anyway, Do you think I can cut out a couple of inches and replace with rubber?
I don't think this is a high pressure is it? It seems to go to the front of the radiator area and then towards the resevoir.
Could I try a compression fitting?? I have 200,000 miles on it and don't want to dump much $$$ into it...

My 01 Sonata v-6 when it upshifts it will attempt to make the shift pause then stay in its current gear for another 3-500 rpm then make the shift. It pauses long enough the first time it did it I thought it died. And it doesnt matter what gear its shifting into. But it never throws a code. The car just turned 60k and had the Tranny flushed at the dealership @ 46K

I have a 2008 Sonata GLS and have had virtually no problems with it. This latest is vexing, though. For the first time since I've had it, I inadvertently ran the battery down recently. Since then, 2 strange things have happened. The first is that now the car automatically locks itself as soon as I turn the key on; I realize this is a safety feature and was told it was supposed to do that - but in the 8 years and 90K miles I've had the car, it never did it once - until now.
The second is more annoying: both my key fobs immediately stopped working. As it's both of them and it was instant, I don't think it's the key fob batteries but related to the car's computer and the dead battery. The dealer can reprogram BUT it might cost as much as $100 if they insist on running a system check.
Does anyone know a way to do this on your own? Such as having the car running or just turned to accessories and pushing the buttons on the fob in a certain way?

I know that the newer Tiburon shares the same engine with my '02 2.7L Sonata, but I have a question. Does anybody know how big a deal it would be to swap over the manual transmission, 5 lug hubs, and brakes over? I want a 5 or 6 speed manual, the big brake upgrade option, and the broader range of rims that would result in these swaps. I also would like to know if the exhaust headers are interchangeable between the cars. Thanks.

We have a 2004 Hyundai Sonata that we purchased in 2004. For the past three years we have had to have the Canister Close Valve and Canister Filter replaced 7 times. We were told that it is because we live on a gravel road and the filter gets filled with dirt. To me, it's rather stupid to place a part like that behind a rear wheel where dust can easily get in it. Is there any way to keep this from happening so often? The warranty pays for having the valve and filter replaced, but it's really a hassle to have to drive an hour each way to the dealership to get it done. In my opinion, this is a design flaw.

Hello all, I am having an issue with my 02 Sonata V6 GLS. The check engine light is on and when I scan for the the codes I receive the following:
P0447
P0031
P0051
P0037
I receive each code twice. I have the details on what each code is, but I was wondering if anyone has encountered this before. It seems to me that there must be a single cause for all of these codes, considering I am getting 8 codes each one twice.
Any ideas for a cause or solution?
Thankls,

My 2000 Sonata (2.5l) idles smooth when in P or N. In gear it seems like it has a miss (though it never stalls). If I apply the gas slowly, it will accelerate just fine. Too much gas though and it sputters and shakes up to a certain RPM. Around 1500 RPM when cold and about 2200 RPM when warm everything smooths out and it runs fine again. No problems at all at highway speeds. The MIL is not on and there are no codes. Can anyone point me in a good starting direction?

I have a 2001 Hyundai Sonata 2.5L V6 DOHC with quite a few performance mods. I just lowered it 1.75 inches with a set of Springtech springs & Gabriel struts. The camber is out quite a bit on the rear and I can't seem to find a rear camber kit anywhere. Can someone please help me? I know that the motor is the same as the 2.7L, just with a smaller bore. Will the suspension setup be the same? Please let me know ASAP, these tires aren't cheap. Thank you for you help. I'll be here.

I have a 2003 V6 Sonata. Been having an issue for awhile now and cant figure it out. First started a few months ago when i started up the car and the engine was idling very rough. The car was drivable but lacked any horsepower and could feel the misfirings. I got the car to my mechanic (not the dealer) and they diagnosed an engine code back to the spark plugs and wires on the 3 and 5 cylindars (i think these are both located on the back cylindars under the manifold?) They were about to change the plugs and wires when the car all of a sudden started running good and the error code went away. They tested the plugs and wires and said all tested fine. They told me there was nothing they could do until the code reappeared. SO i took the car home and drove it for about 2 months. Only issue at this point was while idling at stop light or somewhere you could feel one cylindar miss everyso often, kind of like a small sputter. but while accelerating or driving everything seems fine (no acceleration or other issues).
Then about 3 days ago i drove the car and parked it. Got back in the car about 1 hour later and the same issue was happening again this time worse though. The car would idle real rough and then stall. I had the car towed back to the mechanic but when we got the car off the truck it started right up and was running fine. Still has the slight miss when idling though.
Anyone have any ideas? I dont think its the plugs or wires cause the problem wouldnt just go away. Could it be a computer issue or some sensor issue?
Thanks for you help in advance.

Thanks to the help of this forum, some time ago I started collecting reliability data and posting results for the 2006- Hyundai Sonata (it's repair rate has been better than average so far).
I'd like to also include previous generations in the research, but haven't had enough owners sign up to participate.
Participants simply report repairs the month after they occur on a one-page survey. When there are no repairs, they simply report an approximate odometer reading four times a year, at the end of each quarter.
To encourage participation, panel members receive full access to the results for free.
For the details, and to sign up to help out:

I have a 2002 Sonata w/2.5 liter 4 cyl engine, auto trans, appx 80,000 miles. I have no trouble fault light showing. The car starts very weakly and then runs very roughly for about 30 to 45 seconds then stalls. During that time, I cannot accelerate the engine. I can not restart the car for several hours. I can not get the car on the road due to the lack of power and short running interval. I have replaced the fuel pump, cam position sensor and spark plugs. I have also drained all of the fuel from the tank and put fresh fuel back in.
Prior to the current problem, the car would run fairly well but had very poor acceleration from a standing start. 0-60 took almost 15 seconds! If the air cleaner and cover were removed and I tried to accelerate, the car would bog down and almost stall. Most cars will have stronger acceleration when the air cleaner is removed.
I am very desperate to find a solution or at least a few options I can check for. At this time we cannot afford $ to take it to a dealer for diagnostics or repair. Please Help! Thanks!

Having problems with my Sonata. 2000, GLS, V6, Auto, 76K. Started having problems with hesitation only when climbing hills. Would resolve by downshifting and problem would stop, shift back and would start up with hesitation. Had already ran fuel injector cleaner through the tank twice, changed air filter, pcv and it's hose, cleaned throttle body. No improvement. Today started car up and it ran rough, went about 1 mile and engine coded. Checked code and it was PO305 Cylinder 5 Misfire Detected. Spark plugs are Bosh Platinum and were replaced about 25K ago. Pulled plug 5 (not sure of order but assumed it is the center plug towards front of car) and it looked fine, neither white nor black and sooty. Checked plug wires and at coil for damage - appears fine no burnt or cracked sections. Also, oxygen sensor was replaced within the last 2K, and speed sensors were replaced at 50K.
Any mechanic wiz know what's up with this?? Thanks.

Hello everybody, first time on this forum, so be resonable with me . my Ac went down on me, I took it to a mechanic to see what's the problem with it, after he looked at it he said that the compressor is seriously damaged, so i have to buy a new one, after a few calls he said that he found one, for the price of 1100$ and something else that goes with the compressor can't remember what it was...I told him that is too expensive. At that time i didn't know if it's a trick or anything like that...I said that i'm gonna think about it and I'll get back to him on that. He said that his fee to put it on the car is 350-400 $ cause he has to clean the ventilation as well. Then I looked over the internet for a compressor I found a new one for 450 $, I thought that I don't need a new one cause the car isn't that new...i looked further I i found several used ones between 99-150 $. What I wanna know is how much would it cost to put it on the car, cause obviously he lied to me. Does anyone know aprox. how much would it cost? Thank's in advance....
