I want to replace the existing knob on my '08 Elantra with something a little more substantial, possibly a T-handle type. It looks like it is just screwed on but I wanted to check first with forum members. I can't see any kind of set screw but wanted to make sure before I start turning anything. Also, anyone know the metric pitch/diameter size of the knob?
Again, thanks much for any info!

I want to put an aftermarket auto-dimming mirror in my '08 elantra and am wondering if anyone knows how to remove the existing mirror? It doesn't appear obvious to me and I don't want to start cranking and tugging on anything until I know what is the proper way.
Thanks for any info!

How come no one has commented on the Elanta selected as #1 small sedan and Santa Fe selected #1 mid-size SUV. Hyundai took 2 of the 10 categories. How's that for progress?

My 2007 model Hyundai Elantra has an intemittent starting problem. The engine cranks but refuses to fire. I'm 100k's from the nearest dealer and need to get it started to take it to him. I've checked relay connections and fuses as suggested by the dealer, but still no go, atm. Any suggestions appreciated.

I have an extra set of Korean emblems for the Elantra; "Avante" and "S20" respectively. I also have an interior chrome kit with included 3M tape. Altogether it's worth about $100 but I am willing to take half of that, as I am just trying to get rid of them.
I have an excellent ebay rating (see iborg5) and use paypal for all of my transactions. If anyone is interested, please PM or email me. It's packaged and ready to be shipped

If you are interested in seeing them, here is a link to the product page.

I have a small utility trailer that I'd like to tow behind a 2008 Elantra SE. My concern is mounting a hitch on a car with such low clearance and no rear bumper. Any advice?

I just noticed that right after I start the car (when cold), I hear a humming noise coming from the rear of the car. It lasts about 2 seconds and then stops. I don't here it any other time. Is it just the fuel pump? The car has about 1,000 miles and I don't recall hearing this noise before. Thanks.
Also, I asked the question before but wanted to see if I could get some more input. When I come up to a stop light and apply the brakes, as soon as I come to a stop, I feel a vibration in the brake pedal and steering wheel (when stopped, the car idles fine). Is this the result of a 4 cylinder engine and its tendency to have more vibration then say a 6 cylinder?

This might sound like a stupid question, but as I just arrived in the US, I was wondering how are new cars serviced here.
1. For the car to still be under warranty, do I have to take the car to the dealership for service and oil change?
2. What type of engine oil does the dealership provide and how are the pricing?
3. Can I buy my own engine oil and take to dealship to change? Will I void my warranty and about how much will I be spending for labor?

I've been with my '06 Sonata (I-4 GLS) for just over 2 years now and I LOVE her dearly.
My daughter drives a leased '06 Civic LX. We both DON'T LIKE it. It's underpowered, noisy, and I don't think it's very well built car.
We chose the Civic over the Mazda 3 because the Civic was so much more spacious inside.
This morning I was notified I may be able to end the lease sooner than planned, and am wondering about the new Elantra, a car that got some good reviews, and it's from the family...
I admit, I don't have the time to go back and read the threads of this forum, sorry.... I may have to make a quick decision, and I/we haven't even gone to our local Hyundai dealer to test drive the Elantra...
SO I AM ASKING, what are the "issues" with the 4G Elantra that I should take in consideration? What are her strong points and what are her weak ones?...And if someone here is familair with the new Civic, or if there was a comparison posted here, or elsewhere, I'd like to read that comparison.....
Thanks!

With the purchase of a new Elantra, what's the cost of the Hyundau Roadside Assistance policy? Is it better than what's offered by AAA? Thanks,

I bought a 2007 Elantra brand new not long ago. The car is not even a year old and has less then 9,000 miles. One night when I was driving home from work we were having some heavy rain all day. I was driving slower then normal to be safe, I was doing about 35Mph on a 45Mph road. On the way home I went through a large water puddle about 2 inches deep that I could not see coming immediately after this I heard a scraping noise. I pulled over and looked under the front driver side tire, the front fender splash guard was almost completely off hanging only by a single screw, I removed it and placed it in my back seat. After I got home i checked my car the next morning for any additional damages, I found that the front right fender splash guard was cracked but not as badly damaged. I brought my car to my dealership and they looked at the car and said it was my fault and I would be paying to fix it. I said that a vehicle should be able to handle going through some water at 35 mph and not have pieces of it fall off. The service manager said "Hyundai would go broke if we had to fix every piece of plastic on the vehicles" They refused to fix it and insisted it was my own fault that it happened. They gave me the 1-800 number for Hyundai who told me that i was not covered under there bumper to bumper warranty. I'am waiting for a call back from a higher up. Do you think this is fair, shouldn't the splash guard be built to handle some water hitting it? This is my first Hyundai, but not my first new car. I have a GMC Envoy and the customer care is much better, anything went wrong they fixed it no questions asked, the even have fixed some things since the vehicle has been out of warranty. I love my Elantra but I must say iam very dissapointed with the customer service I have received. I was considering getting my wife a new santa fe but after this I highly doubt it.

I just got an 08 Elantra and when I purchased it, they indicated that all new Elantras had timing chains just like the Sonatas. They also said that they pretty much lasted the life of the car, and don't need to be replaced along with the 60k mile maintenance. Is this true?

Ok. I would like to know if anybody else has had similiar experiences. I currently have a 2007 Elantra SE, and already has about 23k on it. I couldn't ask for a better vehicle and haven't had any maintence or mechanical problems.
On the other hand, about tthree weeks ago, I noticed the car alarm for the car would every once in a blue moon go off for no apparent reason. I read other accounts of this problem in previous generations as well as other car models (not necessarily Hyundai). The car alarm is factory installed. I really couldn't see any contact problems with any of the sensors, although I am wondering if the hood sensor got a little wet from a previous downpour.
Right now, it really isn't much of a problem and only goes off every so often but is sort of an embarassment at times. I was going to just take out the fuse to the car alarm, but it seems that Hyundai has tied that to the ignition and won't start unless it is in.
I was wondering if anybody had an insight on other things I might be able to look into until I get into the dealer.
Does anybody else have similiar or related problems with their alarm system?

Hello,
I just moved to NYC (from NJ) in December. Before I moved I got a oil change at about 5500 miles. I barely drive my car now. I mainly cut it on every three days to move it to the opposite side of the street (parking rules), to run errands locally, or to drive back to Jersey. I only put about 1500 miles on it since my last oil change (back in Nov).
My question is....When exactly should i get an oil change?

Just got my new elantra and have been using the key fob to alarm the system when parking/leaving the car. Several times the alarm goes off, honking the horn and flashing lights until I turn it off. So far it's completely random. I'm used to the lights flashing once when you arm the system but in my car the lights only flash when you disarm the system. Seems like something is backwards. I thought maybe someone here would have an idea before I take it back to the dealer?
Thanks for any info!

the dealership charged me over $300 for a Silencer alarm. They never told me the Elantra already had an alarm system. When I later questioned them, they said this was a passive alarm system rather than the factory installed one. yet the work order says "program silencer security" not install it.
can anyone tell me if the Elantra already has the "Silencer" alarm on it from the factory?
sorry, it's a 2008 Elantra SE bought new.

I use my stock stereo to play MP3 CDs regularly. Many times, I leave the music playing when I turn my car off. Sometimes when I turn the music back on it doesn't always play. I mean the screen on the stereo is illuminated but the time isn't moving and there is no audio. When I turn the stereo off and then on again it usually kicks back on. This happens about 50% of the time. What could be the problem?

This is so confusing, is this correct?:
NA models generally better feature-wise
NA: Elantra BETTER THAN Korea: Avante (Both made in Korea)
NA: Accent BETTER THAN Korea: Verna (Both Made in Korea)
NA: Sonata EQUALS Korea: Sonata (NA made in Alabama Korea made in Korea so KOREAN Version May be better)
NA: Azera BETTER THAN Korea: Grandeur (Both made in Korea)
NA: Genesis BETTER THAN Korea: Genesis (Bith made in Korea, but NA has better suspension, engine, and a better grill. Only downfall is the "H" logo instead of wings)

I am looking at buying a 2008 Elantra SE but want to know what the difference is between these two, besides the horsepower and torque output:
hp @ rpm ULEV = 138 @ 6000
hp @ rpm PZEV = 132 @ 6000
Torque @ rpm ULEV = 136 @ 4600
Torque @ rpm PZEV = 133 @ 4600
What is different on the cars themselves that makes one a ULEV and another a PZEV?
Is it just a different catalytic converter on them?
Will this affect how it drives in a high altitude state or while going over mountains?
I seems to me in order for each car to reach the same speed, the PZEV will burn more gas and therefore, maybe pollute more than an ULEV?

I am looking at buying a 2008 Elantra SE and want a PZEV one for lower emissions. Unfortunately, they don't seem easy to find in Colorado or the neighboring states (Kansas and Wyoming). In fact, every dealer I contacted in the Denver metro area says they don't have one.
There is a rumor of an inside service memo about the PZEV Hyundia Elantra having issues in the high altitude. I've done a lot of research on the internet and can not find anything related to this.
Any truth to this rumor?
Has anyone personally had any experience with their PZEV Elantra not working well at high altitude?

I have a 2008 Elantra and just got an aux male to male cable to plug my iPod into my stereo. The volume is impossibly low! If I max out the stereo and the iPod, it's still too quiet for my preference.
I've heard there's some sort of max volume set. Is there any way to get around this?
Thanks!

Hi all,
Picked up my wife's Elantra today.
But I'm puzzled about something.....
Under the lid of the centre console storage box I noticed a small compartment that has a large "U" shape recess as if it was ment for tissue retreival or something.
Does anyone know what this area was designed for?
Thanks.

I've had my 08 elantra for about 2 months now and I"ve noticed some scratches developing on the plastics on the door closes to the window glass. I've tried scratching this area with my nail and a light run of my nail leaves a big white mark. I can't seem to rub them off and I've also tried using armor all and rubbing the heck out of them with a microfiber cloth. Not sure what to do, I'm used to my tiburon that I had before. It had really high quality plastics and these are too soft. :-( How do I keep my car looking new on the inside? It's carbon gray with the gray interior.

Bought a 2007 Sonata in Nov 2006, have 32k miles on it now and love it.
Only issue is the wife drives it most of the time

Im looking at getting rid of my ranger because of mpg's and inheriting a 82 mile round trip commute to work.
Kinda interested in everyones comments on the Elantra. Looks like the build price is very comparable to a scion(other car im looking at). Also appears the interior is very sharp, not unlike the sonata.
Is the $1000 of permanent, or just a deal right now. I wont be buying until early May.
Thanks for any input you guys can give me.

Before I bought the Sonata I was able to find some good info on what Hyundai expected out of the 2.4, and the high mileage it was built for was awesome. I've been running Penn Plat 5w-20 and the oil analysis results are excellent.
I have not found much on the Beta 2.0, is it a very durable motor also?
Thanks

I want to change out the stock caps for something a little flashier. I bought some TK wheel covers and they don't fit because the stock steel wheel sticks out just enough to keep the new wheel cover from fitting up to the edge of the wheel. I don't want to go with new wheels at this point so I was hoping someone might have a recommendation??

Welcome every body , this is my 1st post here, hope to find answer to my Qustion. I have Elantra 2007 Manual with 3700 Km on the Odometer, the problem is with the Accelerator Pedal , it is Hard to push at first, but then its easy after that,
So that i can not drive smothly at Low Speeds, due to that Hard push, in which
I can not maintain the RPM between 1000 & 1400 , it jumps to 1500 RPM due to
this hard pedel !!!!! SO, what is the Problem here ??? is it the Carburetor ??
This is a New Car, Why Hyundai makes this problem ??? & Also I had another
problem, it is with the Unadjusted Speedometer Reading, But I do not Care about
this Now, the Pedal is importent to be Fixed . THANKS IN ADVANCE for any HELP.

A freind's looking to replace her aging Infiniti. Small family, 1 kid, the car is used extensively for work - mostly urban. She's looking for an automatic this time due to a shoulder situation.
I think there's about a $4K difference or so.
If anyone was looking at both - what are the pros and cons to either choice?

I have a 2007 Elantra with 1300 miles. A rattle or buzz comes from the glove box when driving over roads that are the least bit rough. If I open the glove box, the sound disappears. I took to the dealer for another issue at 500 miles and they couldn't detect any noise. Since then, it has gotten worse. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all, before I get started I just want to say I don't know much about cars as you can probably tell already but here's the deal, I recently bought a new 07 elantra and my problem is, between all the issues I've been dealing with in my life, I've neglected the maintenance of my new car and I haven't changed the oil in over 11k miles since I first bought it. I noticed one day it was not accelerating like it normally does so I check the oil and remembered that I haven’t gone and changed it at all since I first bought it, so I added some oil right away and I called the dealership, they are telling me how I might have voided my warranty and I am really worried about this hoping I didn't do any serious damage, if there is anything seriously wrong with the engine I can certainly kiss my warranty goodbye and rebuilding an engine is not in my price range at the moment. I really screwed this up big time and I am really sweating bullets. Anyone have any feedback? I have my appointment today and I just know I'm going to just get yelled at the whole time.
Oh an for the accelerating issue, it takes a lot of pressure down on the gas pedal to accelerate and it seems like when I hit 40+ it starts to feel like the more I press down the harder it is to accelerate, feels like the gears are spinning fast but with low RPM's if that makes any sense to you. Also I don't have a check engine light.
Please no flaming, I already have plenty of moroseness as it is.
