I just recently bought a 2010 Elantra equipped with the iPod/USB jack. For the first time today, I tried to plug in my iPod Touch (with the newest software upgrade) into the USB port using the standard cable provided with the iPod that is used for charging and computer interface, etc. After plugging it in and the stereo trying to read it for a minute, it says something like a "read error" and will not play. Now i know that there is a cable to purchase through Hyundai, with the USB and aux jack in one, and I am currently waiting on recieving one from them, but I was told that I can use my standard iPod cable in the meantime and it should work, just without control of the iPod from the stereo controls. Is there any settings I need to fix on my iPod or stereo? Please help. Thanks.

Yeah, so I had posted about this a long while back where my trunk will randomly pop open, and of course, it springs up totally open to the elements. I can only assume it is somehow getting wedged in my pocket, hitting another key, and popping the lid. The aggrevating thing is that this can happen from over a football field length away! I have like 3 keys and the fob in my pocket, and this still happens.
So I tried to just mod the button for the trunk in the fob but not break it, and the simple mod I tried didn't work. So I took that back out, and simply removed the plastic trunk button. There's a little bit of space from the ouside of the fob to the rubber over the internal button. Hopefully this will work. It's not the best solution I'm sure, but hopefully will work for now. This is the main thing that ticks me off about this car. Other than that, I'm happy with it. Just crappy fob design!

After leaving my ignition on with my lights for 1 hour or more my 2007 Elantra was jumped. However the jumper cables were reversed. I heard a horn sound and removed them. After some time it was started but all the dash warning lights stayed lit while running. It did not hold a charge and stalled when the other battery was disconnected. I will start with the battery - remove it and have it checked - then the alternator. Has anyone experienced this problem and what is the problem? Thanks,
Ralph
I first checked the fuses in the engine compartment and found the Alternator fuse blown - a 125 amp buss-bar style. When I replaced it and then jumped it again all was well. the "ABS and "Brake " warning lights didn't go off until my initial press of the pedal. The only other fuse blown was the "audio" one.
It seems Hyundai had this situation covered in the electronic design!
Note to self - Double check booster cables connections before jumping a weak battery!
Thanks,
Ralph

Has anyone replaced their brake and turn signals using LEDs? I've a hard time finding ones that are as bright(preferably brighter:)) as the OEM incandescent lamps.
Right now I've already LED-ed all interior lights and I'm moving on to see what can be done for the brake lights which seem to suck up quite a lot of juice.
Those 60M-SMT at V-leds.com look like they might do the job, but they are horribly expensive and I wonder if anyone has tried them?
http://www.v-leds.com/Shop/Control/Product...232247244247242Also, I've some difficulty removing the cover to access the reversing lights. Is there any trick to it?

It has 91,000 miles. I have some extra money to spend, so I am thinking about buying a new Hyundai. But if my current Elantra will last 60K miles are so, I may stick with it. Anyone have any input?

Does everyone have Speed sensing auto door locks with their Elantra? I noticed mine don't seem to lock automatically. On the website it says it is a dealer enabled. Why would the dealer need to enable them and they wouldn't be enabled from the factory?

Hello,
I am considering bringing my 2009 Hyundai Elantra to the dealer to have the speed sensing door lock system enabled! With the system enabled do both the driver and passenger doors unlock when you put the car back in park?
Thanks in advance

Trailer size and weight Recommendations?
Hi,
My 2008 Hyundai Elantra SX Sedan (2.0ltr) has served us well and now we are avid Hyundia fans, always full of praise when talking to friends.
I am now going to start a stall at the local flea markets. I am curious as to all the inns and out’s one must consider when contemplating towing a trailer.
I rang a trailer dealer who was very helpful, but unfortunately the service dept where I bought my car from did not want to talk and simply told me to ring the trailer place back up and get information off them. I was very angry about that and being the way I am, almost decided then and there I would never purchase another Hyundai again! Ironically now I find myself in a Hyundai forum?
Sorry, had to vent that one…My Hyundai was the first brand new car I ever bought and when I cop bad service, I always vow to boycott.
My manual says the car will tow a weight up to 500kg if that trailer has no brakes.
Should I be going for a 6X4 foot trailer so that I can put more gear in it as opposed to what I would consider a more usable size of 7X5?
I’ve been told that the longer draw bar of the 7X5 make for easier handling; especially reversing? Being a little wider also assists when using the mirrors? I’ll be using my mirrors and simply adjusting to the mirror effect…I find the high back on the elantra somewhat annoying and have since learnt to be a pro using my side mirrors.
So whilst a smaller trailer may allow me to carry more weight, I’m wondering if I will be missing out not only on the easier handling of a slightly larger trailer but also the versatility of transporting light but wider and bulkier furniture that a 7X5 could do over a 6X4…decisions decisions???
I’m not sure how I would go picking up ½ a tone of sand/rock, as I take it the 500kg limit includes the trailer as well, then there is all this talk of curb weight/Net weight and so on and on. Sorry if I am getting confused, basically my mate if telling me to get the smaller 6X4 so I can carry more load, which I understand, BUT, the 7X5 size just seem so much more versatile.
Has any other “Trailer Newbie” out there considered such things when contemplating the idea of a trailer with their “small car” Is the Hyundai a Medium car or still small when using a trailer?
What are others out their actually towing with their Elantras? Any feedback welcomed…I don’t want to make a mistake shelling out what little money I have on this project. I’m mostly going to be carrying 2 Market Tents (3M/3M) chairs/4 Tables/some light weight camping gear and maybe some other props for the stalls. I guess I should weigh it all…I’ve been reading up on how to stack the load and all the do’s and don’ts …but I guess that’s not going to help me carry more is it? Arrr if only…I hate big cars in general…well when used inappropriately, but this is one time I wish I had one.
Thanks for listening
Dave

Is this normal? I heard of a feature that does this in some cars, however this isn't listed in the manual, let alone a way to shut it off. I took it to the dealership and they haven't heard of this either in an Elantra. Has anyone else experienced this?

Someone got something on the back seat of my 2009 Elantra and I can't get it out. It's kind of hard feeling, but it looks like it's stuck deep in the fabric. I've tried Goo-Gone and some other fabric cleaner with no success, so I'm going to do the next best thing...
Does anyone have any fitted seat covers for their car, maybe that they can show pics of? I'd like to get some but it's hard to tell with most online places if they will actually fit right and look good. I'd like to get them on the fronts and rear (so they match, ya know).
Or if anyone has any other ideas about how to handle the situation, those are also appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

OK, so I have a 2009 Elantra and have noticed that in the last 2 weeks, there is a severe rattle/clunk when I hit bumps that sounds like it is coming from the back right tire. At times it also sounds like it is coming from the seats. I just can't tell. It has been to 3 different dealers. One said they heard it and suggested it was a loose spoiler....tightened and no change. The dealer I bought it from claims they hear nothing (it is SO noisy!). I went to a dealer today who drove with me and said it may be a defect with struts, etc. They definitely heard it.
So I ask new Elantra owners..could it just be that the Elantra is noisy over bumps? Sounds like my shocks are gone. Super loud when going over bumps. My car is only 6 months old. Help!!
I have another appt with my dealer on Sat but am afraid they will say they found nothing.

Hey Guys and Gals,
My new avante has some serious rim problems. . Cracks are found in equal proportion stretching radially outwards from the bolt assembly. This observation can be seen in all 4 wheel rims and in all bolts of the vehicle. I wrote a email to hyundai service centre but with no reply... An extract of my email is as follow:
"The well defined patterns of the cracks clearly demonstrate that these cracks are not purely scratches or kerb rashes. It denotes possible structural integrity issues that I find disturbing. I did a brief research on the internet and found a relevant article regarding failure analysis in wheel rims that are attributed to the materials and manufacturing defects in the production facility [Failure analysis of cracking in wheel rims- material and manufacturing aspects by Sandip et al 2007 Engineering Failure Analysis]. I believe it is not conclusive to pinpoint the defects of the rims to the material, manufacturing or both; however it definitely highlights a key factor to investigate. As the whole weight of the vehicle lies on wheels that are constantly rotating, the integrity of the assembly lies on the structural stability of the rims, failure of the rims and the bolt assembly will definitely cause potential injury to me as a driver, passengers and any unlucky passerby. "
Anw just wondering any people facing the same problems as me?
THanks

Hello,
New 2010 Elantra SE owner. A few questions that the Manual doesn't seem to address well.
a. What is Eco Mode ?
b. How close to seizing, or actual damage, does the over-temp light come on at ?
Have time to go another 50 miles or so, or does it truly mean pull-over-immediately, or else ?
Unbelievable, IMHO, that they don't have a temp. gage.
c. Any conditions where you might not want the Traction Contgrol/ECS to be on ?
Thanks,
Bob

I have a 07 Elantra Sedan, and wanted to change the radio for one that has Bluetooth and iPod functions. After over 8 hours at radio installation shops, I am still using the straight am/fm/cd player that came with the car. I even had Kromer Radio, recommended by my local Hyundai dealer, try for over 4 hours with no luck. They suggested the car was originally from the US where sometime they have different dash sizes.
HELP! I hate not being able to use my iPod, and no the stupid fm transmitters do not work very well in TO.
I did see someone else had a similar problem.
"I'm trying to install an aftermarket radio into my 2007 Elantra Sport and am finding it EXTREMELY difficult in locating a suitable dash kit for this project. I'm located in Canada and I've tried two Metra models already without any luck. What's the deal? I'm told it's a CAN/US thing. Has anyone else also butt heads with this problem? This doesn't make sense! Travis. "
Does anyone know if buying a trim kit from the US will help? Should I drive across the border for a trip to a radio install place there? I really want a radio to replace this one, not some add on that costs twice as much (Parrot kit)
Please please please......I want a new stereo system!

I'm going to my dealer to purchase a new Elantra GL at a dealwership in Toronto Canada. I checked the CAR COST invoice price and they had it listed at about $18,060. With taxes, ac tax, fuel tax ($75) shipping (and deducting the $3500 rebate) I was hoping to get the car for $19500 CDN. Do you think this is a good price?

Has anyone experimented with these cameras which are designed to help you back up by giving you a mirror image of what's behind the car. From what I've researched, the tiny camera fits on the license plate and is wired to the backup light and the little 2 inch monitor sits up front. They have both wired and wireless ones and the price seems to range between $75 and $200. Some newer cars have them already and I thought it would be a good safety measure to take because of the upwards angle of the Elentra rear window. Any feedback?

First Hyundai, first forum ever. Wanted to ask if any one else is experiencing poor fuel economy with their Touring model? I have about 800 miles on the car and can not get above 19.9 in the city. Now where close to 23 miles per gallon. Have talked to the dealer several times and they just shrug their shoulders........very disappointed......
I traded a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe for better gas mileage, but haven't seen much of a change yet.
Please post up your city MPG if you have a Elantra Touring model please!

I have my new 08 Elantra now since 4 months and I am happy overall. I am missing the auto climate control from my previous car very much though, has anyone attempted to upgrade, is it actually possible?
Here is my question about the climate control knobs:
The setting as pictured below gets air to the front screen and to the feet, but it also seems to activate the air conditioning unit.
[attachment=13902:off.jpg]
[attachment=13903:on.jpg]
A few things are not clear with this setting:
At this setting there is no green light on the left (AC) knob
I can still depress that left (AC) know and the green light comes on
And most importantly: why would I want to activate the AC to defrost a frozen front screen in winter with a cold car?
In any other car I had before I could simply direct air flow to the front screen with whatever temperature was set at this moment. Is there something wrong with my control panel? I have been at my local dealer with this question, but they said this is functioning as intended. Strange ...
Thank you for your input and suggestions!

[attachment=15943:2007_Hyu...em_Image.jpg] 2007 Hyundai Elantra (fiery red color), 32k miles, “under warranty”, with sections of peeling clear coat and localized areas of fracturing paint, penetrating through the clear coat & top coat on the hood, roof, and trunk. Car was bought brand new at Drew Ford/Hyundai of La Mesa, CA in late 2007 (previous year’s model). Within one year, these issues began appearing, and have progressively gotten worse. Now, there are 50+ total spots throughout the car’s paint surface. We brought this issue to Drew Hyundai over the course of 4 to 5 visits, including having the Hyundai Motor Rep, Jeff Phillips, and the Drew Collision Center Manager, Larry Houk, inspect the car. Jeff said the issue was acidic bird droppings. Larry asked what Jeff had said, and said he’d agree with that. This car is 2 years old, 32K miles, has been washed regularly, and had never been through any unusual circumstances, including an excess of bird droppings left on the paint (it may have had a few from time to time). However, neither Hyundai Motor nor Drew Ford would stand behind Hyundai’s warranty. What good is a great warranty if they won’t honor it? Shame on them. I would never buy another Hyundai or shop at Drew Ford/Hyundai, and hope no one else has to go through this. We’ve since traded in the car, as it is quickly getting worse, and will shortly need a full paint job. I am a certified paint inspector, and believe this may be an issue of incompatible surface metal and paint, a poor paint surface preparation, or a defective paint product. I admit, I don’t know, but I have never seen a two year old car with disintegrating paint from bird droppings. VIN KMHDU46D77U048438

I'm debating putting some larger wheels and tires on my 07 Elantra GLS. Thinking maybe even some 17's. Does anyone know the largest size of 17 inch tire that will fit? Not that I'm going to put that size on, I'm just looking for sets of used wheels and I want to know what sizes to be looking for and which ones are too big.
Anyone have pictures of custom wheels/tires on their Elantra so I can see what it might look like?

Does anyone know where I can the commercial where a woman sees the parked car, writes her number on a piece of paper, kisses it then leaves it on the windshield? After she leaves, the owner of the car (a blonde woman) comes by, sees the number WITH the lipstick on her car, takes it with her, and then drives off.
I've searched on YouTube and on the Hyundai website for it and I still couldn't find it. If anyone knows where I can find this commercial, it would be a great help. Thanks

Hello,
Read in several places re paint problems with new Elantra's, and Hyundai's in general.
How true is this ?
Have they fixed their paint, and/or paint application process, for the 2010's ?
Or, still lots of complaints regarding ?
Sure isn't something I would want on my new Elantra, if I do purchase one.
Much thanks,

I have Canadian 2007 Elantra Sport. I noticed that some of the lights on the rear spoiler break light do not work. My question is, can I replace just the lights or do I need to replaced whole break light (red part I see that it is being held by few screws) or whole spoiler? I had service done just this past weekend and Hyundai dealer did not know either, they said they need to contact factory to find out what to do.

Hello,
Looks like a fine Forum; glad I found you all.
First time poster.
Hope this doesn't upset anyone here, but I am a Dad trying to steer their son to the "right" car.
Son really wants a new 2010 Toyota Corolla. Had a '91 which never really gave any problems; good car.
Will all their problems, recalls, and now new posts everywhere regarding steering problems and instability and wandering at
highway speeds, it is, frankly, hard to suggest that he go ahead and purchase one.
Sounds like another recall in the works for this steering problem, related to their EPS unit apparently.
Anyway, the Elantra certainly does look like a good possibility.
I imagine most of you folks that have one probably went thru the decision process of an Elantra vs. a Corolla, vs...
Might I respectfully ask what swayed you to the 2010 Elantra ?
What do you like (most) about it ?
I guess even more important, what don't you like ?
In general, has Hyundai, thru their dealerships, been responsible regarding problems, etc. ?
Not too many dealers around my area; what do you do for service, etc., particularly if a problems develops away from home ?
Any and all thoughts would be most appreciated.
Tough decision.
Thanks,
Bob

Wheel nut torque. The Elantra owners hand book states 65 /79lb-ft,no indication if this is for dry or lubricated threads. Haines repair manual states dry for thread tension as a general statement for torque figures.
I note the wheel nuts are plated, assumed chrome for which no torque correction would be required
ie. the same as for steel to steel.
I have lubricated wheel nut threads for many years after an experience with seized nuts on a friends car. Plus having been in involved in the installation and maintenance of large turbine/generator units for many years where torque figures were always taken for lightly lubricated threads.
In my case I lubricate both the threads and the mating conical faces of the wheel nuts.
The question arises of torque reduction for lubricated threads ? In this case I have reduced the maximum of 79 lb- ft by 15% to 67 lb-ft and tensioned to that figure, using a recently checked torque wrench. I consider this a safe figure and should not lead to distortion of the brake disc, generally caused by over tightening. Rattle guns are definitely out, with out some torque control method.
A quick look on the Hyundai service web site gives further information under Service Information -TSB -Elantra HD
(1) Number 04-50-005. Wheel lug nut torque - Service tip. three pages.
One caution is not to use an air/rattle gun with out some form of torque limiting device, pointing out up to 300 lb-ft can be generated and lists seven possible consequences.
However there was no reference to dry or lubricated threads, I assume the 80 lb-ft torque quoted is for dry threads as this being the case with new cars. If so there was no remedial action for lubricated threads,(a) Clean and dry threads (

A revised torque figure.
I am sure most wheel nuts threads would have some type of lubricant after a visit or two to a tyre shop or the average garage.
(2) Elsewhere noted two statements
(a) Torque values are not applicable if threads or surfaces are coated with oil.
(

Reduce torque value to 85% if threads or bearing surfaces are stained with oil.
Would be interested to hear members experience and comment on wheel nut tension.

Hello,
A little mixed up regarding the Elantra PZEV cars.
I understand that Calif. mandates them, but I live in Mass.
Does Mass. mandate them ?
What is really confusing is that the dealer seems to have, per his website, both PZEV Elantra's, and Non-PZEV cars for sale.
One of the wiki's on this shows Mass. as requiring, so don't understand how he can sell both versions, if so ?
Any differences in mileage, or other factors, between them ?
Can anyone clarify this for me, before I go down tgo dealer, and probably get
wrong info.
BTW: when will the 2011 Elantra's be out ?
Thanks,
Bob

When sitting in Neutral or Park with the engine warm, my throttle goes from idle 650-700 right to about 2000 RPM. I have 14,000kms on it now. The fast idle works OK at RPMS between that OK when the engine is cold so it doesn't look like a ECU Problem.
There is no way that the RPM can be set lower, when attempting to go lower it drops right to idle. The dealer says the TPS is testing OK, but it never did this when new. It used to go gradually right up the scale.
Does anyone know what the dealer TPS testing actually measures? I suspect that it only measures the output voltage to be within requirements of 5 to .2vdc, but doesn't have anyway to measure a linear change in voltage that should be taking place when the throttle is depressed. And since the engine never tries to speed up unexpectedly except under no load conditions like this, they say it is normal and won't change the TPS.
My guess is that the TPS resistor is not working linearly and that the first part of the throttle movement doesn't change the output voltage to allow throttle setting for a lower RPM than 2000 under a no load condition only.
Remember you can only test this in park or neutral with no load and the engine warm.
I would be really interested if anyone else is having this problem as the dealers demo also displays the same symptoms after a quite a few 1000 km's.
Further investigation has shown that the TPS output is linear and the ECU just doesn't react to changes in voltage that will allow the engine to run at less than approx. 2000RPM under a no load condition. Apparently all the 2.0 litre engines perform the same way by design.
It would seem to indicate that safely controlling your vehicle with precise fuel adjustment in tight places is not necessary by someones standards.

hi all,
i have 2007 hyundai elantra se with hankook optimo h426 tires.I like the car ,everything is very nice exept ,I THINK,the tires.I'm driving a lot in the streets and when i hit a bump or pothole ,the car making a lot of noises(ratling noise) coming from the suspension(all 4 weels). The dealer check suspension and said that evrerything is good.I also think that suspension working properly, because a can not belive that all four shocks not gonna work properly at the same time. Can be this from the low quality of the tires and if i change the tires ,this gonna solve the problem?
If somebody have the same tires on the car ,tell me what you think for them
thank you

Rear Suspension Issue: The dealership and tire shop say my suspension in the rear of my 07 Elantra is bad causing poor alignment (the tire shop says its way out and can't be aligned) and the car has a saggy butt. The dealership wants $660 to put in new shocks and tiresplus wants about the same. I looked under the car and it has separate springs and shocks so it should be an easy swap.... if I can find some parts
I have visited advance auto, o'reilly's auto; looked at the web pages for shox, shockwarehouse, kyb, tokico, monroe, bilstein and other sites that match products to your car like tire-rack and statRacing and NO ONE can tell me what shock absorber fits the rear of my car. I was thinking maybe they were struts; again searches come up empty on the internet. I viewed the Hyundai service website and it says they are shock absorbers in the maintenance guide so I am left puzzled and very frustrated.
SOOO, to my question... Is there a decent after market item anyone knows of that I can stick in there or do I have to put in a Hyundai part? I am not quite ready to spring for lowered springs and my thinking is they should never really go out so shocks was the first fix I was thinking... any ideas or part numbers out there??!!

Does the Tire Monitoring System have to be recallibrated because I switched the GLS wheels (195/65/15) onto my SE which had 205/ 55/16. And is the tire pressure different in these tires? By the way, I switched tires because the GLS tires made the steering easier and/or less stiff.

Some background... 2007 Hyundai Elantra, stock suspension.
Anyone use lowering springs? Any recommendations on brands or how low it should be dropped (that won't completely impact the ride of the car)? I've seen a few kits that offer 1" drops - front and rear. Too much?
Thanks, JW

So in december I installed a bulldog remote start system in my sonata. Ever since then whenever i push decently hard on the brakes or make a quick-ish turn to create some kind of force, it cause the radio to shut off, heater to shut off, and my headlights to dim. So i removed the remote starter and everything is back to the way it was but the problem still persists. I've taken it to a hyundai dealer and they took apart the whole dash and were unable to find anything wrong. anybody have any ideas?

Test drove the 2010 GLS 4 dr sedan and assumed the two trims handled the same, so decided on the SE because all of the features. But then thought it would be prudent to test drive the SE, as well. When I did I was surprised - it felt completely different. The steering felt as if I was driving a truck - it felt very stiff and more resistant (less giving) than what I had experienced in the GLS. Is this my imagination or is there a tangible difference? Thanks for your feedback.

(1) Having recently purchased an Elantra my query is defrosting the rear view mirror, the owners manual states this will come on with the rear window defroster if equipped . Is there a way to see if the rear view mirrors are fitted for defrosting ? The rear window is easy as the heating element can be seen, but a search on the internet indicates that with rear view mirrors the heating element is behind the mirror and can't be seen.
The alternative is to wait for suitable weather to try it, but that is six months away in Australia.
(2) Looking for further information I went to the Hyundai Service Website and using ETM and selecting Elantra HD - 2010 then Rear Glass and Mirror Defogger the schematic diagram ( SD 879-1 ) shows a defrosting element, I realize there are some differences between models sold in USA and Australia.
The main query here with the web site is that on the schematic diagram I had up there is a box for several photos and a reference number for each, is there a way to access these photos ?
Thank s for any comment on either of above.

I recently bought a 07 Elantra GLS for my daughter for her first car. I have looked in the owners manual on how to change the display from Fahrenheit to Celsius, on the automatic climate display, but there is no info on how to do this. Does anyone know how to do this? It's a Canadian purchased car so it should be able to be changed.
The only reason I need to do this is because my kids here have no concept of Fahrenheit.
