Many people do not realise that Hyundai U.S.A. have provided a free online Workshop Manual for all the Hyundai models that are sold in America.
To use this click :-
http://www.hmaservice.com/ Register (Internet Explorer required).....log-on, using the password they email to you, click `Service Information` & enter your car`s details & click the `Shop` tab.
It might be an idea to bookmark this to your favourites........& remember you can print off sections (or the whole manual!) as required.
Cheers,
Nick.

Hello everybody, I recently purchased a used automatic 2000 Hyundai Accent with 106,xxx miles on it. I purchased from a dealership (big regret now) when I bought the car the check engine light came on, being smart I took it to a near shop to run the codes where it came up as P0422, catalytic converter failure. Well I immediately called the dealership I was buying it from and they said they would fix it because before the final papers where signed over it had to pass emissions, and with this code, it would not.
So I took it to the dealership, dropped it off and went to school, I wish I could have stayed but I am a college student and couldn't afford to miss any classes. I got a call back saying it had passed through emissions and my car was ready to be picked up.
A few hours later I went and signed the rest of the papers officially putting the car in my name. I drove it for about an hour when BAM light comes on again code p0422.
I called the dealership and told them the light came back on and tough luck. (big surprise, POS dealership)
So my question is, since obviously the catalytic converter wasn't replaced how would they make this light go off to pass emission. I read that unplugging the MAF can turn the light off for a little while but it didn't fix the problem only make it unreadable.
Also is this for sure 100% the catalytic converter I also read that replacing the o2 sensors might fix this problem?
Any info is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Chad
(I apologize if this has been covered I have searched and just haven't found the answer I'm looking for)

does the 2004 accent have either or both of the above?? if so where are they located?? how are they accessed?? the online manual was no help.
hoping someone knows. everytime i fill it up, the trouble light flashes for a few minutes. as the tank starts to empty, with driving, it stops flashing. maybe raw fuel is getting into the canister during the fill up [if the car has a canister close valve, this might be involved]. maybe a fuel tank air filter [if the car has one] is blocked and prevents good purge flow. the code is p0441 and the purge valve is NEW. replacing it did not change the problem [the dealer's advice]. the gas cap is new. this did not solve the problem [the car parts shop advice]. does anyone have any hot thoughts??

I've noticed in the last few months that when I press down on the gas (usually in higher gears) and put a little stress on the engine, I an hear these faint metallic pings (maybe ping is too strong a term, it's very subtle). It started out when I'd really be giving the car some gas, but now it occurs when I accelerate even moderately.
It's been doing it less recently with the cooler weather, I noticed it more with the warmer temps.
Could this be the sparks detonating too soon? I say this, since a friend of mine suggested it after I described the sound.
He said I should fuel up with some higher octane and see if that fixes the problem.
Any thoughts on this? How hard is it to diagnose something like this? Is there something I can rent at Autozone to check it?
Thanks.

Hi, I've got a 2004 Hyundai accent with only 99k miles on it. Perfect mileage for things to start breaking, eh?
Well the engine will turn but not start. I pulled a code and all I got was P2407 (Evap leak detection or something) sure enough the hose to the evap charcoal canister did pop off, so i re-attached it.
Still won't start.
I Took out the back seat to check if the fuel was pumping from the tank and it does fine. When i crank the engine fuel pumps out fast.
My first guess was that it was the fuel pump or the fuel filter but they seem to be fine.
Now my guess is that it's something up by the engine that's not allowing fuel to get into the engine.
Any Ideas?

When i lock the doors the passenger lock always sticks. I very rarely locks - if i open and close the doors about 6 or 7 times then it eventually locks. What could be the cause of it sticking ? How do i get the door cards off so i can have a look inside ? I can lock it without problems using the key in the lock so it seems its a central locking problem as opposed to a lock problem.

I searched and read through many posts on this subject but Im still having trouble replacing the bulbs. Im replacing the driver side bulb of my headlight. I removed the battery and Im looking down on the power housing where the wires connect to the headlight unit. My question is...
The clips/grips/tabs that you press to remove the housing from the bulb - if I am looking down on it, they are on either side of the black housing, right? Are they the sort of very small arrow-like looking clips? I squeezed these as hard as i could and pulled but nothing moved. Im afraid im going to break or dislodge anything further inside if i pull too hard. Im wondering if im squeezing the wrong tabs because it seems more-difficult-than-it-needs-to-be.
Is there are 'click' when the tabs are fully squeezed....or can I just pull hard enough with worrying about any damage?

2004 Accent - auto. - 100K miles
Ok fellas, some you have seen my posts dealing with my CEL for code P0304. I thought I had it solved but now it comes on after every fuel fill-up. Its happened at least 5 times or more. I know what the code means (ign. misfire #4 cyl.).
I read and checked what affects the code but this one has me baffled. I thought at first it is the evap. canister but the car takes a fuel fill-up without any trouble and it is not hard to pump it all in and does not give me the code. If I put a bottle of STP gas treatment in the tank it clears the code after about 40 miles drivieng but it doesn't explain why it sets off the CEL on every fill-up. I also thought I may have sediment in the tank and the fill-up is stirring it up but I have filled her up and various capacities. Also, several weeks ago I got the CEL code P0441 for the purge control valve. I replaced it, cleared the CEL and it never came back on. Fuel filter has never been replaced because it is built into the fuel pump assembly.
Overall drinvability and MPG's are not effect. Any thoughts fellas....

Hello everyone,
I just bought a 2003 Accent with 15,000 Miles on it. It's been sitting for a long time... Still in GREAT condition. I'm going to change the oil, but I use FRAM Oil filters (have been since 1999) I never knew that they were bad for you car. So What type of filter is the best Price/Quality? Also, I always replace my stock filters with K&N's, I just saw the cold air intake by K&N (57-0520). Is there a noticeable difference between the CAI and just the replacement filter? THis is my first Hyundai, is there anything else I need to know? Recommendations for maintenance. I plan on tinting the windows, air filter replacement and maybe a quiet performance exhaust (later down the road). Other than that, this is just my commuter car. Thank you in advance for the responses.

I did a search, but don't see this anywhere.
My car is currently in the shop having a cv axle shaft replaced. I thought this problem was related, but the shop says there is nothing wrong.
I noticed that the steering wheel has to turn quite a bit further than it used to. It is especially noticable when making a 90 degree turn. I don't recall ever having to turn the wheel so that is it upside down to do that! This car has 121K+ on her.
I have a friend who is a master mechanic and he says this sounds like the "rag joint" or universal joint in the steering. He also says that he can't recall any Hyundai ever having this problem, and he has worked on a lot of cars.
So, anyone know? Ever had to replace this thing, and how much did it cost? I can't imagine it was cheap.

Yes, I normally don't do these forum things, but I have a few questions hopefully you guys can help me with:). I bought my 04 Accent about a year ago, and it has been awesome! It currently has 89,000 miles on it and it has been slipping a little bit over the past few months (maybe one time a week). A month ago I got into my car after an oil change and i put it in reverse and it took a minute, but after about 10 seconds it went into reverse. I checked the transmission fluid and it was very close to empty so I filled it up. The fluid is pink. Last night I went to get in my car and it would not go into reverse at all! The fluid was low again, but it would go into drive. I filled the fluid up and still no reverse, and only first gear when driving in drive. While driving down the road at 20 mph I put it in N and turned it off then back on and it will shift somewhat normal if I do that, but still no reverse and pretty much only First gear(low). PLEASE HELP!! Any Ideas!!

My daughter has a 2004 Accent w/ 80K miles. She bought the car used 3 years ago from a Hyundai dealer. Oil changes have been completed regularly around 5K or 6K since she bought it. Here's the deal:
She took the car to the local dealer (she's 4 hrs. away at college) b/c of engine noise. They tell her she has low compression in cylinders #2 (<150) and cylinders #1 have 180. So now, according to them, my choice is head/valve job or rebuilt engine!
As far as I know, the dealer did no other diagnostic tests. My daughter says she hasn't noticed any change in power or acceleration. My father-in-law says it sounds more like a lifter issue to him.
I've searched around here and about decided to just flush the engine w/ ATF, seafoam, detergent, etc. and see if any improvement is noted. I may end up driving out there this w/e but I sure would like to have a handful of ideas before I leave!
Thanks in advance ...

Just had my 2002 GS (~95,000 miles) in for a safety inspection deal offered by my mechanic. His verdict:
Loose left outer tie rod end. Recommends replacing both for about $300 including labor.
Belts are all dry and cracking. Will replace all including timing belt for about $400 ($255 labor, $75 timing belt, other three belts about $20 each).
I know I'm due on the belts and the price seems reasonable (I think) based on other threads I've read. I've also read the threads about the timing belt DIY and I don't think I'll have the time or resources to tackle it before it gets too cold, and I don't want to wait much longer. I'm going to see if he can do the water pump too since I've read here that when it goes you have to remove the timing belt anyway.
As for the outer tie rod ends, a few questions:
1) Is it an easy DIY project? I've seen replacement parts on ebay.
2) Is there anything I should notice while driving or upon inspection that would clue me in that the left one is loose? I want this to be a learning experience and it would be good to know how to recognize the problem in future vehicles.
And a bonus question. I've noticed a little oil leaking around the top back of the cylinder head cover. Is it likely that I just need to replace the gasket? Is it as easy as just taking off the cover and switching out old for new?
Thanks in advance!

I bought my 2001 accent 1.5L auto trans ~120 XXX km (no power steering option) last year in November used but in good condition, it seemed to be kept up really well (regular oil changes, services, etc) except for the transmission fluid. When I took it in for its first oil change, the tranny fluid was black and thick, but there seemed to be no issues with the tranny.
After a few months, the CEL came on and stayed on (to this day). I've been told many times that it's the O2 sensor not being recognized by the computer, but its working (this comes from the local dealership).
2 months ago, the car started 'hopping' and revving strangely on startup. the first time I'd turn the key, the engine would give one good try, turn over, then shut off. The second time, it would rev far too high .. then turn off. The third time I'd turn it on, it would purr like new! I took it in for a tune up, but nothing changed and no new codes came up when it was scanned. The car did stop 'hopping' though (which was attributed to engine misfires in 3 cylinders)
After the tune up, my car started screeching (that seems to be the best definition for the crazy noise it makes) whenever i have the heat on, or A/C. It seems to instigate it when i accelerate, but does it at idle, as well. This is the least of my concerns but feel free to shoot some ideas ..
Now, the car is back at it, and hard. it feels like it's almost dropping in and out of gear, into neutral and back as I drive. It happens all the time, not just when it should switch gears. It happens when the car is cold, hot, highway and in the city. currently, I'm at about 165 000 km, have had a full tune up, a fluid and filter service within the past week and try to take good care of it, but have no idea whats going on. I'm getting really frustrated with it, and need to know whether it's worth keeping or scrapping.
Sorry about the long post, I tried to get as much detail as possible in, because I don't know that much about cars. I'm heading to the mechanic tomorrow, but I have a habit of getting ripped off pretty badly there. Thanks in advance guys !

As state above i have a 2001 Accent, and i would like to know how to change the lights behind the dash cluster (speedo, fules etc.).
Is it as simple as unscrewing the surround, and the faceplate thats got the speedo prints on it?
Also what type of bulbs are they? I was once told i think they were T10 bulbs? Does this sound right?

I was having an issue electrically with my car that was draining my battery. I took my car to the garage where they said I was having a draw from my dome light, so they pulled the fuse in order to stop the draw. When they pulled that fuse, they also killed my radio. I have an aftermarket head unit that I installed myself so I rewired the head unit to make sure there wasn't a draw there and the garage says I still have a draw.
I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent L hatchback. Which fuse did they pull? From what I understand my car has two fuse boxes, one under the steering column, and another under the hood.
I can live without my dome light, but I would love to have my radio back. Is there anything I can do? My mechanic says that he believes there is a ground coming from the light, not my radio. If I pull the dome bulb, will that break the circuit stopping the draw? Any help would be appreciated guys. Thanks!

At 50 Kmph it shows 60, at 70 Kmph it shows 85, and at 100 Kmph it shows 125.
It looks like the cable goes directly from the console to the top of the transmission. Could I possibly have the
wrong speedo driven gear installed in the tranny?
Does anyone know how I would diagnose this problem?
Thanks

I found a couple 1G Tibs at the junk yard. Anyone know if there are any parts that I could use to upgrade my Accent?

This is the first time on the forums and I'm hoping one of you gurus out there could help out a bit. I recently got a 2000 Accent GL that has been having some engine issues. Here's whats up...
Everytime I put the AC on, go up hill, or are at a stand still, the engine will badly chugg and one rare occasions died (mostly when the AC is on). This may not have helped the main problem but I have changed the plugs, wires, fuel filter, O2 Sensor (check engine light indicated that but still on), still nothing...
I just don't know what it might be. Any suggestions as to what I can do (and not just taking it to a mechanic)?
Thanks

need some help. I have 2001 Accent with the 1.6L, automatic. The car sat idle for 2 years. Tried starting it this week. Replaced the battery with a new one, removed all of the old fuel, (maybe 1 quart was still in the tank), and installed 5 gallons of fresh fuel. Replaced the fuel filter. Still no joy. Seems like the fueld pump is NOT starting. I had checked it during the fuel filter replacement and it ran 3 or 4 times with the key in the on position. Car turns over well, new battery, but no start, not even a rough attempt. Can the fuel evap system lock out a start? I ran the pump several times with all the tank lines disconnected, so I assume that the evap system didn't like that. I will try pulling the DTCodes tonite. Any suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Hi guys - I am new to the forum (at least for posting) but I have visited many times. Now I am in need of some expertise. I am very mechanically inclined and have worked on cars for 20 years +, but this one has me stumped. I was driving my 04 Accent GS on the highway yesterday around 90 Km/h (55 mph) and something happened. All of a sudden I heard a very loud noise exactly like a transport truck was beside me with his engine brake on, except there was no truck beside me! I looked down to see my speedometer reading 200 km/h which of course I was not doing. My dash lights went out (I had my headlights on) and all indications were that the car had stalled but it's difficult to tell. I put it into neutral and turned the key off but like I said I can't be sure if it was still on or not. I'm almost sure that the horrible noise was still there (engine brake noise) as I was coasting in neutral with the key off. I would have bet a year's salary on the fact I blew up my engine (perhaps timing belt even though it only has 68K km (43ish K miles), but I went to start it after we got it off the road (about 1/2 hour later - I figured what have I got to lose) and it started right up! So then I thought I must have blown my tranny but it shifted into gear fine. After work I then drove it home (not on the highway) and it's as if nothing happened. My speedo cable is fine too. Talk about a mystery! Oh yeah, no engine light came on at all. The only thing I can think of is maybe a sensor malfunctioned and then reset itself. But I can't trust it now. Please help! If it trigger a code how can I find out what happened? Has anyone ever heard of this type of thing before? Other than this it's been a great little car. Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give as much info as possible. Thanks in advance for any replies.
