Did anyone see that there are now new rear springs for the 06-08 Sonata? This was recently posted on hmaservice.com. There is no indication what the reason for the new parts is but one would think it was to address an issue. The TSB says that if the new part is used that both rear springs must be replaced at the same time so they must be revised from the current part.

Hey everyone figured I would introduce myself here since I have an '08 Sonata. I've been lurking a while and never realized people actually modify these cars. I received mine after retiring a tired '00 Xterra. So far I have ordered the Sentania G4 Exhaust (yes I know i gotta mod the bumper), tons of intake parts and contacted SFR about finding a strut tower brace for my car. I know it's an exhausted topic but I hope to construct an intake that not only functions well with proven numbers but also to give a reference as far as cost, parts and instructions so maybe a dedicated how to topic can be posted. I'm a firm believer in making a car perform well regardless of what you have. I know I'm not going to have 12 second quarter mile times but I'll be damned if you're going to catch me driving around in a car that isn't sleek. Project should come into full swing around mid October. Pictures to follow, insults to be ignored.

So about a month ago I took my car for my 30k service to a local mechanic (he used to work for my Hyundai dealership, then opened his own shop). Reading some recommendations here, and though I first resisted the idea, I took the plunge. I had the guy change my tranny fluid with that "magical" Castrol Multi Import....
.... Getting out of the shop I wasn't at all amazed at the performance, it was NOT like night and day as some here have claimed....
...But then after driving the car for a month I can say IT DID MAKE A DIFFERENCE: Unlike before, when the car would occasionally shift violently and every now and then produce an annoying hiccup ----- especially when I was squeezing the engine for more power ----- those hiccups and violent shifting DISAPPEARED ALTOGETHER ! The car is now more consistent and predictable in its shifting quality.
This, after not even replacing ALL the fluid, since not performing a flush, a good portion of the old, original fluid still remains stuck in the system.

Am looking to buy a 2006 Sonata GL V6.
This is the first time I will be a buying a used car (all previously have been GM).
I test drove it today and was impressed with the power it had.
It is a no accidents reported car with 110000 km on it.
The only things, AC (AC on Pontiac just failed too but that has over 200000 km on it) didn't work and there was a whistling sound coming from the windscreen area that seems to be the rubber covering on the wipers which were ripped.
These two things will be fixed before purchase which also comes with a 1 year Lubrico warranty.
Most of you had your's for a while now.
Any suggestions or recommendations.
Do these regularly go up to 250000+ like the Camrys or Accords.

Probably the best Deal you will ever see here. Right after we first found out about these incredible looking Sonata mats the price went back up.
One of our members discovered the 2010 Front set was still at the sale price and will fit the entire NF line. If anything just give these a look.
Similar Mats sell for $100!. Don't miss out

Car has a weird shaking or vibrating coming from the middle or the rear of the car, I can't really describe it. You can only notice it at low speeds, and it's only noticable after you drive for a while, it doesn't happen immediately. It happens whether you press on the brake or not, just while driving. I'm not sure how I should handle the situation either. I changed my rotors and brake pads because I thought that might have been the problem, but it turned out it wasn't.
I took it to the dealer, they said it was the end links that were loose so they changed that. It didn't fix the problem. I took the car back, and they checked it out, they couldn't locate the problem. They put it on the lift, said it wasn't the sway bar, suspension, etc.
They said because I didn't change the "brake pad clips"(I'm not sure what to call them), and they appear to be the original ones that came with the car, I'm not really sure if they are or not, but I know the brake pads were changed once, but maybe that wasn't changed, I need to change them first, and since they looked for a problem and don't want to waste more of their time (basically what they told me, they will start charging me to find the problem now), they will charge me $159 labor + $20 for the part + tax to change it. Now it may or may not fix the problem, that may not be the problem at all, and if it doesn't fix it then I'm out almost $200 for no reason. They said they don't want to waste time, and it's ridiculous to look for a problem with my car. But the problem is it's a vibration or a shaking, and I would think that SHOULD be covered by the warranty.
Should I try taking this to a different dealer, and pretty much never go back there again? Get the part changed myself at a different mechanic shop, as I don't see a reason to spend $179 + tax at Hyundai.

Hi everyone, i moved from a 08 to an 2011 sonata. I T-boned a 2010 RAV4, she decided it was safe to go without looking......
so lurking in this section will be missed! :-P
But anyhow. I had a set of bearly used weathertech digital fit liners in my car, which i loved but are useless to me now.
figured someone here would like to jump on snagging these up for CHEAP. I posted them on ebay. here is the link
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...0427005699#shIdAlso I forgot to put the factory floor mats back in when geico took the car from me so I have a set of those as well. OEM black carpet floor mats. Someone can just make me an offer on those.

I have an 08 Sonata GLS and today an annoying rattle was coming from what seems to be deep in the dash on the passenger side. I checked the glove box, closed all the doors tight etc. etc. but it is still there. It seems like a vibration as it is pretty constant but it does change going over bumps etc. Has anyone else experienced this (i.e. is it a known issue)?

This is my wifes car. She has not changed the way that she drives nor has anything been neglected such as maintenance. The car has 44,000 on it. For the past several months it has went from gettin 28 to 29 MPG to now were lucky if it gets 22 MPG. Oil is changed every 3000, air filter every fourth oil change and I just replaced the plugs. Tires are kept at the same PSI. does anyone have a clue as to what it could be? Also there is no CEL so I see no reason to put a code reader on it.
TIA

Today, I went to the local dealership to have a rear-end squeak investigated on my 2009 Sonata GLS (2.4L-4cyl Automatic) with 25K miles. The squeak has yet to be resolved, however while I was there, the service manager told me of a new TSB for my vehicle that just came out on June 9, 2010. The TB7 Campaign 10BA23R0 pertains to the ECM module with regard to automatic transaxles. No further information was given by the either the service manager or mechanic regarding this TSB other than it being a software update for shifting issues. Have not noticed any significant changes in behavior as of yet, but looking forward to next trip into Colorado Rocky Mountains where I have experienced some unusual shifting behaviors in the past. Will follow up within next few weeks after I check it out in the mountains and on the highways.

I searched for posts, so I'm sorry if this is already answered, but I didn't find anything. I found a post about the 2 screws, but no mention of the center nut...
Just a quick question:
Does the 2 screws hold the front rotor on, or does the center nut need to come off also? I was looking at it today and I can't tell if the nut over laps the rotor to hold it on, or if the rotor just slides over it... I had the 2 screws off and the rotor didn't budge. I already read about the rust holding the rotor on, but I didn't hammer the rotor because I wasn't ready to replace it today.
So just the 2 screws or the center nut also?
Thanks
I just want to throw in that I do like the brake setup on the 2009 sonata, seems pretty straight forward as far as removing the calipers, pads, pins, bracket (except the bracket bold behind the arm, kinda hidden back there...) A lot easier than the previous mazda6.

I know it is a common topic, but I have yet to see a topic describing exactly the problem I seem to be having. I have pushed the back windshield, and haven't gotten a peep anywhere, so it's not that. It's coming from the outside, because it is so much louder driving slower with the windows down. It appears to be coming from the rear left of the car. It's a definite "creak," and not a "thunk." Sounds like creepy stairs being walked over repeatedly...I haven't investigated hard enough to really pin point the direct spot, but it would sound to me like it has something to do with the suspension in the back left. However, it's not any more prominent when I hit a bump than it is just accelerating or decelerating, so that also leads me away from it being a suspension issue. I know I should look further into it to locate the spot, but I wanted to see if anyone else had experienced this too.
A little more info on the car:

Hope you can help me out.
I have a 2007 Sontata GLS V6
I just went on a small road trip. Toronto - Chicago - Toronto, Sat-Sun. Basically 9 hours 1 way and 8 back.
AC was on the whole time, on the way back stopped 3 hours into the drive to use the washroom, and when I started the car the AC did NOT.
I called the dealer and they want $129.99 to look at it to tell me whats wrong. Does anyone have any ideas?

So I tried the search box to see if anyone has replaced a fuel pump on an '06, without success. If there is a thread would you link me to it. IF not, then here is the story went out to start the car, cranked fine, battery was full. Did not smell any gas coming out of the tail pipe. Checked all the fuses I thought might be the culprit, none found. Checked spark, good. Accessed the top of the fuel pump, connectors good and fuel in the line. Called AAA to tow to dealer. When he got here he hammered on the fuel tank while I was cranking and the car started. Driver of tow truck thinks it may be the fuel pump? Called the dealer back and asked his opinion, he stated that he would not "shotgun" a fuel pump in it. He states that he has not put a fuel pump in the same make model in the three years he has been there. Yes I agree, I have underwear older than that. So I thought I would ask the forum. Has anyone done a pump on an '06 and/or do these opinion sound accurate?
Thank you for your time and input,
Damian

08 Sonata: I have been noticing this for a couple of months.
Its summer out here in CO and my car typically has the the thermostat on cold, but the AC is off, Air on fresh air (default with AC off), windows rolled down. After driving the car for ~ 5-10 minutes, the vents for the driver and passenger's feet blow out hot air. It gets just a little difficult to breathe and I am forced to turn the AC on. The AC works fine, no issues.
Any suggestions as to what is wrong? I am at 43k miles and wanted to run this by the forum before heading to the dealer.
Thanks!

My '09 Sonata 4cyl GLS is at 40k miles so I'm looking at replacing the tires soon. Since the car has TPMS which I've not had before, I'm wondering if there is anything special to be done when tires are replaced? Don't want to be surprised at the shop with some unneeded add-ons.
Normally I would have the valves replaced; does the TPMS necessitate a special valve, or do you rebuild the old valve.
Thanks.

In a couple of months or so I'm going to have my 30K service performed. Based on the manual, here is a checklist of services I'm having performed:
Full Inspection
Engine Oil/Filter Replace
Fuel Air Filter Replace? (see below)
Fuel Filter Replace
AT Fluid Change
(I'm replacing the engine and cabin air filters myself.)
Couple of questions:
The manual states that the fuel air filter, charcoal canister, should be changed at 37.5K, is this really necessary or overkill? I've never heard of it needing to be regularly replaced and have not even replaced one before in all the thousands of miles I've put on previous vehicles. According to dealer, it is ~$150 for parts/labor.
Is there a tranny filter? If so, when should it be replaced? This is not mentioned in the manual.
I'm going to ask dealer about using Castrol Multi-Vehicle AT Fluid to see if they will use that ATF on my request.
Anything else I'm missing?

For those who have the nav system... have you ever gotten to a hidden screen? I've gotten to a hidden screen twice but I cannot repeat it. I went to setup then pressed on system info, then pressed on map update. It asked to eject the cd and restart update, but I was messing around and it went to a different screen. I cannot remember if I held down the setup button or pressed something on the screen but I cannot get back to it. It shows other information like speed, and usb update mode, and moving the vehicle icon, bunch of other stuff as well. Has anyone else gotten to this?
Update: Tried for 30 mins... didn't work. I did more research and it's similar to the "engineering menu" on the Genesis Sedan Nav systems. None of the TSBs mention this menu for the Sonata.

I have a 2009 Limited V6 with 13K miles. The car loses about 1 Qt of oil between oil changes. Now I know by most car manufacturers stands that's not considered excessive but I guess I'm kind of surprised that a car this new is burning that much oil already. What does Hyundai consider excessive?
For those of you with the 3.3L how much oil do you have to add on average between oil changes?
Also as a side question I noticed Hyundai recommends 5W-20 oil, it's even printed right on the oil cap. Can I safely use a 5W-30 synthetic blend without potential warranty problems?

Hey guys... I've got an extremely short time period to buy a pre-owned 2009 Sonata GLS.
Here's some specs:
- 2009, white, tan interior, wood trim
- 6 cyl (vroom!)
- 28,300 miles
- Not certified, so it's the 5yr/60k mile warranty

The reason I have a short time to buy, is a) it's a killer deal (from my findings)... $13.9k,

it's a 6hr drive from where we live, and we happen to be 4hrs closer to it this weekend due to a vacation we're taking.
Now, first and foremost, I'm not a car noob, just a Sonata noob... I've done plenty of work on other cars, specifically my '03 Accord, which I love.
I'm reading on this forum and finding a LOT of reports of the following:
- Some creaking/thunking noises
- Some a/c (ie, vacuum leak) and dash issues (rattling, etc).
- Suspension/sway bushing issues
- Misc cosmetic issues (molding, panels, etc)
Can someone speak to these issues? IE, what's causing them (poor quality? abusing the car?)
I'm nervous to drive 6hrs from home, buy the car after a visual inspection/test drive, and come back home to find it has/going to have tons of issues.
If the suspension and bushings go out, I'm ok with turning the bolts on those and replace them with polyurethane or something stronger, that's no biggy.... but the quality of the rest is something I'm not going to have the capacity to do. I can't replace panels, vacuums, etc due to lack of those tools/knowledge (not that it'd be hard, but I just don't have the time/patience to learn about how panels come apart).
This is the first time I've ever bought a car off someone I didn't know, and a dealership (stealership) at that.
Anyone have any tips? Questions I should ask, things to look out for (specific to the car, not the negotiation.. I'm a hardass so negotiations I'm ok with).
I'm concerned about any issues with this generation of the Sonata that I'm naive about, and want to know up front.
Please help a fellow hobbyist grease-monkey out!!!!
THANKS!!!
-John
PS - The first thing I plan on doing is replacing all filters, probably a tranny fluid swap (NOT FLUSH!! I will NEVER do a flush on ANY transmission), and potentially a full stereo/speaker replacement.
Later on the line, I *might* do a CAI or WAI/SRI - but since it's the wifey's car... probably not ;)
I'll only change suspension/springs upon required maintenance on this vehicle, but for the sake of asking, what's the thing everyone's using on these? On the Accords we like Eibach ProKits and Koni Yellow adjustables...
Anwyay, thanks again for any help!

Recently I decided to "top up" A/C syst on 2006 sonata (4 cyl eng, 45000 mi). It was working OK (I guess!) but it didn't feel like it is blowing ice cold from vents as it was brand new - just a feeling...
Went to automotive store and got a can of EZ Chill r134a refrig.with lubricant in it. Comes with a adapter hose and a gauge to fill up. According to table on a can it should be 25-35PSI on low side port when AC running at 25C outside. It was arr. 28PSI -according to a can gauge-before top up. Did not use more then half of can.
After few days it developed following:
Turn AC on-light comes on-blows ice cold through vents but only for 5-10min then warm(outside) air for a 5 or so min then back again to ice cold, and so on.
I kept that gauge from a can and now it read arround 35psi when AC is running (with same temp outside). So there is enough refrigerant in AC syst but it behaves like it is low on it (cycles on-off-on-off)?!
Did I overcharge it? I don't have a gauge to read high side port-only low side.
Any ideas? Anybody had similar problem?

My Grand Am GT blew the Headgasket a week ago so I have been busy Car shopping. I came across this MINT 2007 Hyundai Sonata GLS. It drives nice and everything seemed to work perfect! The Check Engine light is on but the Sales man claimed it was because Someone forgot to tighten the gas cap all the way.
Im just wondering if there is any major problems with these cars (Such as Engine problems, Electrical, Cosmetic etc..). So far i have heard about the Airbag issues and the Brake light. Anyone else know of any issues that I should know about Please let me know! Also, How do you guys like your cars?

Oy,
So I'm looking for stiffer sway bars, but not really coming up with anything. I found sway bars on sharkracing.com, but they are just retreated OEM bars.
Kinda crappy IMO. Some friends of mine that are really into cars told me that the decrese in roll with these sway bars isn't going to be worth the money at all.
So, does anyone know where I can order thicker / stiffer sway bars? I'd really like to stiffen this car up. It has waaaay to much roll, especially in the rear.
Thanks!
Josh

So yesterday my Mom and I were going to take her car somewhere. Before I got in she reached over and slid the drivers seat all the way back (I am taller than her and she had driven last). The Air Bag light on the instrument panel stayed lit...and has stayed lit several trips. I know she got a letter about the ESC light recall (she has an appointment next week)..would this have anything to do with the air bag light triggering?. I am pretty sure the dash "airbag off" light stayed off when she was sitting in the passenger seat. She is freaking out..and OF COURSE it has just over 50,000 miles (so no more warranty due to her being 2nd owner). Any suggestions?.

OEM's lasted about 33K miles...
Bought Falken Ziex 912's and two on the front must be replaced after only 22K miles...I rotate the tires every 6K miles (every other oil change)...
I have been taking my autos to a firestone 'store' for the past 2 years and have had very good service with them, no complaints from either shop...(1 close to home and another close to work).
I bought the Falken's from a different shop.
I guess I didn't do my homework with the Falken's, evidently they are a soft tire (good grip etc) but poor for high mileages..
Anyway local Firestone shop recommends dropping down to a passenger tire vs a performance tire....will save money and last longer...
What do you guys think?
2 tires I am considering so far are the Firestone FR710 ($118 per) and Bridgestone Turanza Serenity ($163 per) not including mounting road hazard etc...
FR710's are a 65K tire and the Turanza is 45K..
On the Turanza, it is buy 3 get 1 free, which in the end make them about $50 more for a set of 4 over the FR710. Turanza get very good ratings and is probably a superior tire for handling etc...FR710 will probably last longer and not offer as good of ride/handling...
What would you do?
Thanks folks

Hello... have a problem with the ac on a 2006 Sonata that dealer is having trouble finding.
The car is 6 cylinder, automatic with 45K miles. Car is out in the sun all day. When I leave
work it takes anywhere from 10 minutes to over an hour before the vents blow cold air.
This is regardless of whether or not I set the climate control to manual or automatic. The
fan blows fine but the air is warm. Once the the vents start blowing cold air there's no
problem until the next day. Since it only got hot recently this is the only pattern I've seen
so far.

Wife just had 2 new tires put on. the front tires were pretty worn out and the rear tires still looked good. anyways they put the new tires on the rear and put the rear used tires on the front. now she said she is hearing a roaring noise that goes away after she drives a littler bit. i took it for a test drive and i kinda hear a roaring noise coming from the front of the car. almost sounds like a large truck tire going down the highway. but i dont think these small stock tires should sound like that right? could the tire be bad even though they look decent? broken belt of something inside them?

Since I bought my Sonata used, my warranty expires at 5 years/60K, in about 2 years based on current mileage usage. Around that time I am planning on purchasing an extended warranty. Not sure if I should purchase a Hyundai EW or go third party. I had a third party EW on my Saturn that extended coverage to around 105K with a $50 deductible per incident for exactly $743, (found sales receipt). It more than paid for itself over the years.
I'm assuming that with a Hyundai EW, I must go to a Hyundai dealership for warranty repairs, same as with current factory warranty. I'd be interested in hearing any experiences, good or bad, regarding EWs, Hyundai or third party. Any reccomendations for third party EWs? Do I even need an EW for a 2009 Sonata? Thanks in advance!

I'm not certain if I am the first, but I just ordered KYB GR-2 front struts (#341476) and rear shocks (#349060) for my Sonata. Although KYB now makes the front struts, demand is pretty much non-existent and no one stocks them. I called around for price and the cheapest place was the Tirerack, but they had to special order them. Tirerack's customer service rep told me that for items like this, they generally don't buy them from the distributer until they have a confirmed order. My price was $170 for a pair of front struts and $118 for a pair of rear shocks. Shipping is $16. No tax. Estimated delivery could be up to 6 weeks.

The 3rd brake light bulb went out, the one in the back dash. Does anyone know how to remove the cover without breaking it? thanks.

My a/c is smelling pretty bad despite the car being only two years old with 24,000 miles on the odometer. For $60, does the "mist" cleaning offered by the dealer work? I suppose I could spray Lysol into the air intake, but I wonder if it would damage the paint/plastic finish . . . .
Thanks!
