This Lantra was built by MTX Audio in Australia. This is everything that I know about this car.
If you have some photos or information about this Lantra, please send it.

i have a 2000 automatic elantra that, as of last night, will not work unless i jump it every single time i have to start the car. i do not think it is the battery - that is fairly new (under a year) and i have had no problems at all. but i noticed that suddenly, after about five years, the red alarm light near the steering wheel has turned itself on. not blinking, just solid red. coincidence? that's what i'm trying to figure out. is this draining my battery? is this some weird alarm setting stopping the car from starting? it is the factory installed system that came with the car. most importantly, can i fix this without having to take it in? if there is some way to disconnect the alarm completely, that would be fantastic. any help is appreciated :D

I own a 1997 Elantra and I am thinking about changing the timing belt. Is this a difficult process? Does the car need to be elevated or can it be done standing over the engine? What are the major steps involved?
Thank you

Its quite simple, my 96 Elantra starts up perfectly every time in the winter, yet in the summer my car starts fine in the morning but randomly does not start after the initial start. After it does this I ether keep trying to start it until I get lucky and it all the sudden fires up or I crank it until the battery runs out on me were I then break down crying, cursing and shouting at God and his son. When getting around to dealing with the battery a few hours later WAMMO!! it will start right up and I then drive off in euphoric glee, praising God and his son.
I've seen many people with this same problem but nobody ever comes up with a definitive answer.
Like to hear from people who have had and remedied this problem.

So I have a 96 elantra and the clutch and transmission were just replaced. Now the clutch pedal will not depress at all and the car wouldn't start after this was done. Anyone have any idea what could be causing these two problems???

I got a little problem with Elantra (RD) 1999 2.0L
My check engine light came on and I started wondering what it was that was going on.
I took it in to the local garage and was charged $35. To let me know that I don’t know how to put a gas cap back on properly.
That just got me so upset, seeing that back in the 70’S I worked as an apprentice mechanic and today because of technology these mechanics think that they got you by you know where.
So I went and bought an OBD-II CODE READER and it gave me a code P0441.
Know as far as my search goes I don’t think that the code had anything to do with a leaking system.
Actually that code P0441 lets me know that I must check the PURGE CONTROL VALVE.
Well when I checked this valve for myself I saw that it was defective by blowing into it and there was no resistance.
My big question is “What Is the normal cost of this valve” ?
My HYUNDAI dealer is asking $107 for this, I read that others paid $35 Is this a rip-off?
I went to a scrap yard yesturday and found two that where no good went 40 miles for this, at the price of gas maybe i'd be better to by it from the dealer.

Last weekend after parking the car on my driveway, next day it wouldn't start. It would crank very strong but no start. Car has 172k miles on it. Anyway, I initially thought it was the fuel pump. I would swear that each time I would start the car, before it cranked over, I would hear a faint buzz-like sound of the fuel pump pressurizing. Because I no longer heard this I assumed fuel pump or maybe a fuel relay (if there is one). I had it diagnosed today and it turned out to be the CrankShaft Position Sensor. This is a $110 part. So its fixed and running again. I'm going to start listening hard again to see if i hear that fuel pump sound when I start it.

Hello,
Used 1999 Hyundai Elantra GLS wagon
Recently my speedometer, odometer, and cruise control stopped working at the same time. I bought the car in August 2006, and they have worked until just recently (June 2008).
I understand that the odometer relies on the speedometer cable, however I don't know why the cruise control died too at the exact same time.
The cruise control switch on the interior center panel still works just fine, the light comes on and everything. When I try to set the cruise control speed with the multi-function switch arm coming off the steering wheel, it does nothing. The light on the instrument cluster does not illuminate, and cruise control does not engage.
I also have no idea how the speedometer gets its readings from the engine. I've taken out the instrument cluster and can see that there is a connector inside the dash that slides into the back of the speedometer gauge, but I cannot find any detailed descriptions or diagrams on hmaservice.com for where to look for the speedometer cable, speed sensor, or anything like that.
I have checked all fuses visually and with an ohmmeter both in the engine compartment, and in the accessories fuse box, none are blown or otherwise damaged.
Any suggestions or nudges in the right direction are greatly appreciated!

i posted earlier and asked about my timing belt. All i have to say is thank you to everyone who responded. I disassembled the components necessary to change the belt, put the other one on after i reset the timing, and it fired up and purred like a kitten. after looking into this matter more i discovered that while it is in fact a dohc, the cams are driven by a internal belt under neath the valve cover... This one didnt break, the one that went around the crank broke, so i think i got really really lucky i just wanted to thank the people that took the time to read my previous post and furthermore declare what an awsome site this is. so again thank you everyone. also check out my garage

I can't figure out what's wrong with this car, about 3 weeks ago it started to run very badly so I had everything tested and cylinders 1 3 and 4 misfired, so I changed the plugs and wires with bosch platinum plugs, and cylinder 3 still misfired then it started surging on acceleration like it was kicking in and out of gear and it would stall every now and then, so I changed the coil pack, fired it up and check engine shut off, ran it for about 5 miles and it ran like a champ. Parked it then went to work the next day on my way home the check engine light started flashing again and it started to surge again. so I disconnected the negative battery cable for a couple hours, put it back on and fired it up the check engine light went off and it ran good for about 10 minutes then did the same thing again. I have no idea what's wrong with it please help.
It's a 1996 Elantra 1.8L automatic.
Thank you!

Hi Everyone,
My 97 Elantra is doing the strangest thing. It started losing coolant a few months ago and we couldn't see a leak. Took it to a few mechanics. Finally found a leak and was told it wasn't a headgasket. (My oil was fine, no gunk around where the oil goes in, no white smoke and no antifreeze smell)
The mechanic did replace the beat up radiator. This seems to have solve the overheating problem it was having. Now we are still losing coolant but having no signs of why. I believe I do have a small leak in one hose towards the front passenger side but nothing too serious looking. I just fill my reservior yesterday and 24 hours later, it is dry again.
Could the heat be making the car hold in the coolant after sitting for over 8 hours parked?
Thanks
Hope

FM transmitters don't work well at all so I would like to hardwire my Microsoft Zune to my car's stereo. I was wondering if there is an RCA input on the back of my stereo. I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra with the CD stereo model number H922J. If there is no direct RCA input on the back of my stereo what might be the best/easiest/cheapest way to get my MP3 player playing clearly through my stereo?

The belt on my Elantra was squealing a little bit after first start up after I bought the car about 3 months ago.
Since then I have changed the timing belt and all the drive belts with Goodyear Gatorback Belts.
The past week or two my power steering belt screams when I first start the car and last for about 15 seconds and then stops, the car the will only squeal when I turn the wheel after that, when I turn the wheel it will squeal untill I do a full cycle of turning the wheel and then it wont squeal anymore..
A turn cycle (keep turning wheel to left or right until it stops)
After this the car does not squeal when I turn.
But when I turn off my car and start it up again, it does the squeal for 15 seconds and the process repeats itself on each start
What could this be?
The all belts are brand new.
I checked and retensioned the belts.
The fluid is red and at the correct level.
The car steers great while driving.
The pullys are clean.
I even wiped a little bit of sylicone spray lube on the pully groves just to see if it changed anything, but still the same.
???? Any ideas?

I want to be able to look through the downloadable infromation from hyundai online but they only list the cars in the US version. I need to know what a Hyundai Lantra estate from the UK is called in the US.
The reason for needing to information in the first place is that the car failed its MOT on a cv boot, a distorted anti roll bar linkage, and also the front brakes so i need to be able to change these parts.
I have now changed the brakes and they are still a little spongy, so now after having looked at the assembly im sure i can change the cv boot and the linkage but i cannot undo the main hub nut, the one with the split pin? Is there a reason for this, is it a standard thread?

My 97' Elantra has been idling rough lately. The vibrations intensify when I turn on the headlights (especially the high beams).
I know the problem isn't the spark plugs or plug wires. I added some Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner to my gas tank thinking the injectors might be getting clogged, but the problem still remains.
Any ideas?

Hi folks,
I bought a used 99 elantra and can not be happier with it. It runs just fine, economic. I jumped on this forum, and try to learn more about overdrive button (O/D), and I found out that I should leave in on in order for running economically. I understand that, but I want to know, if I leave O/D off all the time, and drive it long (1 to some hours continuously), or drive it in high speed (60-80 mph), is it safe? Will driving with OD off kill my car soon, or I will still live fine with OD off?
Another question is about the Power/Normal button near the gear shift. I have no idea what it is for, and what settings I should use.
Please help,
D.

My question is can u change the lights on my model to the upgraded one's on a 1999 model??? Would like to do it and change it to a new front bumper..
Any advice or help would be great...alternatively can any one help out with any body kits to suit a 1996 model???

I hope someone can answer these for me. I have a 2000 Elentra...
#1 - I had a CD changer installed in my car awhile back. Every since then my lighter does not work. ( I can't even charge my cell phone in the car) I took off the center instrament panel and everything looked good. It's not a fuse. How can I get it working again? Any ideas besides taking it back to where I had it installed at? I really don't want to take it back and have to wait for hours if it's a simple fix I can do myself.
#2 - The light behind the radio does not work? To fix it does it simply require taking off the center instrament panel and pulling the stereo out and replacing the bulb?
Thank You for your help!

Hello,
Just curios who has over 200,000 miles on there Elantra.
Please do not hijack this forum and turn it into a maintance issue forum.
In other words I know it depends on how often you change the oil etc.
In General I am just curious who has high mileage on their ? Elantra's
I know a few people that have over 250,000 on there Honda's and Toyotas.
Do you think that Hyandi's are just as good?
I am a recent Hyundai Elantra Station wagon owner I love the car I bought it with 50,000 miles and Hoping to get at least 200,000 on it.
If you got your transmission or engine replaced you do not count LOL.
So reply back with how many miles you have on your car I am curious.
Jonathan.

Is the alternator for 2003 elantra the same as with the 2002 elantras? I am planning to replace the alternator for the 2002 elantra with parts coming from a 2003 elantra (alternator). I believe I have a defective 2002 elantra alternator. It burns my headlight twice already once I start the car and the console light are very bright.
It has run 65 miles since a MIL light and SRS light illuminated and without a headlight. Everytime I drive it I'm thinking im on a stealth car.
MIL = missiles indicator location/light
SRS = surface radar sighted
no headlight = auto burnout with key on.

ive just put new break pads on my 1.6 lantra ls and now the car jumps occasionally as if i was in too high a gear, but it doesn't do it all the time
its ok between 0-15 mph
occasionally jumps 15-25
jumps quite a bit 25-35
never 35+
what could cause this?
does it have anything to do with the break pads or is this just a coincidence
or has the procedure of putting new pads on moved something else thats cause this
oh and its a manual and im using the same gears as i have for 9 month since i got the car

I have a 97 elantra that has just gone threw its 2nd automatic transmission. It tends to be a trend for the 97's in most of the forums i read online. I was wondering if it would be possible to install a manual transmission instead of an automatic. If this is possible which i think it is what would i need. Is it even worth it and is it just worth selling my fair condition elantra that needs a new tranny for 500 and buying a new car.

Hello all, bought a 1997 Lantra Estate 1.8 CD yesterday been looking for a nice looking estate for a while but this one seemed to stand out so I bought it! Being 11 year old it has a few little problems that I would like to sort out, but as there is no Haynes manual which I've relied on a lot with my other cars I'm stuck.
The air con doesn't seem to work just blowing warm air, got no idea really under the bonnet where i need to recharge the system any ideas or help anyone could give would be great.
The rev counter seems to be stuck onto 2000ish revs and I have a cd player i would like to fit but not sure how to remove the factory fit cassette player?
Sorry for the questions straight away guys, been looking at the garage gallery and there are some stunning cars there!
Cheers all
Jeff

I have a 2005 Hyundai Elantra. Lat year when I bought it, it had 21,000 miles on it, now it has 33,500. Well when I first got after I drove it for a while the right rear would make a clunking noise. Took to dealer and he said he heard it also. They gave me a loaner and kept the car for a week. Them after that they said they could not find the problem! They said just drive it and when whatever is causing the noise breaks, we will fix it…pretty incredible huh!
I put new brakes on all the way around (was making noise before brake job).
Some people have suggested that there is a bad bushing in the rear? Anybody have any ideas….Thanks….I want to print out the answers and take them with me to dealer….

I have a Lantra 1.6Si from 98 with 115k miles on the clock. My brake drums have become very rusty and are affecting handling now. I'm looking at replacing them, happy with second hand. Are these brake drum unique to this model or all Lantras or are they also the same to Accents, etc?

here's the saga. had a check engine light, went to auto parts store and had codes read. it was downstream o2 sensor fault..so I replaced them both. light did reset but it returned later. check codes again. this time upstream sensor fault and low volts. replaced upstream sensor again. reset ck eng light and it returned again with the same 2 faults as before. service manual says to check for 12v at the o2 sensor plug. only have 7 or so. this says that the ecm is shot. I find it hard to belive this could be true. anyone had the same problems??..if the ecm is bad where is the best/cheapest place to get one??

Ok i have a 2000 hyundai elantra 80000 miles on it. Just had a new timing belt water pump thermostat couple sensors and gaskets replaced. Was running great and about a week ago i started to notice engine pinging. Sounds alot like a semi. When i accelerate ticking becomes faster. Any ideas on what it would be. Could something of came lose of off after a month or so after getting everything fixed.
Also my back windows dont work. I can here the motors going when i try to use the controls. I took the door panel off and see a cable that isnt connected but cant seem to figure out how to fix it. Hard to see behind door since only a few access holes. Anyhelp would be great just ask if you need some more info. Not to worried about my windows but would really like to hear about the engine. After just spending alot of money i really dont want something else major wrong. Thanks in advance.

I have a 1999 Elantra and the int. wiper control and park does not work. The slow and fast speeds work fine. I have checked fuses and motor works fine (connected up spare working motor, and verified it worked, only on slow and fast wiper speeds as well).
According to the schematics the ETACM is responsible for the int wiper, timing control, and auto parking. I need to first get to the module (in back of ashtray/radio), check the power to it, and and the ground, and possibly replace it.
My question is which electronic box is it behind the radio, upper one or lower one? Each one has a multi wire terminal connected to it. Both boxes have a sticker label HMC One is stamped "AT" (w/18 wire connector) the other has a 20 wire connector. How much should I expect to pay for a new one? Any other concerns I should be aware of?
Thank you, Todd
