I recently bought a ‘94 Elantra from a fella who said he had lowered it by “heating” (presumably with a torch) the springs and bending them. The car sits fine and I like the stiff feel of the ride.
However, upon crawling under the car today to have a look around, I noticed that the rear springs are not sitting properly on their perches. The bottom of both rear springs are off-center with the result that half of the coils are sticking beyond one side of each bottom mount. (The top of the springs look fine.)
Is this something that could be the result of improper installation of the springs after they were altered (assuming they were removed to be made lower), or is this something that could’ve simply occurred during regular driving use? Is this something that even needs to be fixed, or is it okay the way it is?
If the springs need to be centered, would taking the weight off the wheels and prying or pounding the springs back into place get the job done?

Hey Guys... Ive got a small problem here.
My Lantra 96 makes weird screeching noises in the engine compartment. Apparently, it seems like the sound is traced from the timing belt region. Im not sure what the exactly problem is but everytime the noise is heard, Ill just spray WD40 around the timing belt region n it quitens down. Abt 1 week later, the same noise crops up again. This has been going on for 2 months.
1) What are the possible problems associated with the above?
2) Is that a sign that the timing belt is worn out and can it possibly snap? The timing belt has barely been changed last year.
Hope someone can help me out. Thanks!

I have a -93 1.5i Lantra, originally sold in Germany. I have to replace the brake discs but am having a hard time finding the right discs.
I'm trying to dig up exactly which brake discs are on it and, ideally, how to find out which parts are on the car myself. This is not the first time that I've been looking for parts for this car. Usually, engine parts will be those from the Pony and everything else from a 1.6 litre Elantra, but not this time.
What has probably happened is that the rubber boot on the guide pin for the caliper assembly has broken. This has let dirt, water and salt in, causing the caliper to stick on the pin and the brake pads to always remain in touch with the disc. Net result: Brake disc running hot and warping.
Regards,
Fred

I've owned various vehicles for over 30 years and I've just bought my first non-GM car, a 1994 Elantra. I bought it from a young fella who had spent a bit of money lowering it and putting a fancy exhaust system on it. It looks pretty good for a 4-dr sedan. Perhaps I'll post some pictures of it in the other part of this forum.
I know a few things about fixing American cars, but next to nothing on imports. Please be patient with me!

This may seem like a real newbie question, but don't the (non-electric) rear side windows roll down all the way on the Elantra? Both rear windows go down easy enough but then they stop with about three inches still to go. I realize it's highly unlikely that both windows are faulty. It would look so much "cleaner" if the windows were flush with the "sill" when rolled down (like the front side windows). Is this the way it has to be?
I promise my future posts will be much more technical than this one.

I have a 1995 Elantra. I was driving and all of a sudden the transmission acted as if i put it in nuetral. I currently have no power in all the gears including reverse and low gears. Upon inspection i could only find a clicking noise coming from the transmission. Any possiblies that it could be just a solenoid connector? Any help would be apriated so i can get back to the work. Its my first car. PLEASE ANY HELP WOULD BE DEEPLY APRECIATED

I really could use some step by step directions on replacing a timing belt on a 1992 Elantra.
The haynes manuals cover only 1996 and up. The Hyundai shop manual is somewhat unclear on the process. I would appreciate any help as I am I trying to put this car together for my mother.
Thanks in advance.

I have a 1994 hyundai elantra . It has the Misubishi 1.8 liter dohc , distributerless ignition system. I have no spark at the sparkplugs. I have tested primary and secondary parts of the coil pack. It ohmed out ok according the the Haybes manual I have. I found a module that was smoked and replaced it with appeared tio ve a god junkyard part. NO hyundai parts store could identify the part. They even called Hyundai company but could not find theat part with the partnumbers on the case. I have a new ecm and camshaftr sensor. But , I don't understand how to test either of these parts to see if they are bad. Any ideas?? thanks for any posts. chris f.

As of recent I have been having a strange problem in my '92 Elantra. It has 158,000Km and an apatite for oil which is odd in itself. But now there seems to be a new problem I noticed it one evening while idling with my music turned off. A strange click noise emanated from under the hood and then the idle Rpms instantly dropped, only to return and drop / click again after about 30 - 45 seconds.

Even more concerning I also noticed this during my normal driving abet without any noticeable rpm drop, but defiantly the same intermittent clicking noise.
If anyone has any possible ideas what may be causing this or solutions I would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks

Hi All,
I just got my hands on a ’95 Elantra. Engine turns over just fine, good engine sounds and there no obvious physical damage to the engine but it refuses to start.
I can tell you one thing though; no fuel is getting to the injectors. I’ve pulled the fuel line, and dropped it into a bucket, and turned over the engine just to see if fuel was getting to the engine, and nothing came out of the line except an initial drainage from first being disconnected.
I don't hear the pump kicking in either.
Can any one give me some pointers on what could be causing this? I’ve cheeked for blown fuses, etc. but have not found any.
I’m guessing that either the fuel pump, or filter is shot. Is there any definitive way to rule either out?
The previous owner of the vehicle said it ‘died on them” and her description of what happened was…
“I was driving it down the road, the engine started to sputter, so I pulled into a parking lot and shut it off. When I tried to re-start it, it refused to start. I had it towed back home and it’s been parked ever since.”

Hi,
I am buying a 93 Elantra and I was wondering where to find mods for it online. I found a couple of places but they look kinda wierd. I plan on makeing it somewhat of a sleeper, I would prefer to keep the exterior as stock a possiable but get the performace up to the level of a Cutlass Supreme(my previous car: 2.8l v6 2dr) or higher. I also read on one forum that you could swap the Mitsu Evo engine for the stock Elantra but i can't find it and i would like more info on that also. Maby Hyundai's just are not popular enough in the northeast USA for something like this to be viable. Any help or ideas will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Have a slight problem in that my Elantra is failing to start. Removed the sparkplugs, checked them and even replaced them - still no spark. removed cambelt cover to check if its not the belt. All OK. Electronic Ignition is fitted. Distributor has kind of a coil around it but where does the "signal or pulse" come from in order for the firing order to be correct. Could that be the source of the problem or does the coil fail as well???
Any suggestions out there1?

Hi all,
I got a 1994 Hyundai lantra 2 weeks ago for AUD4500 +AUD188(rego)which has got like 128000 Kms . The car is in excellent condition except for some problems. I had a few initial problems from day 1.I could never say that it will start in my first attempt. I thought it's not bcoz of the battery or the starter motor. Maybe it's the injectors that needs to be cleaned. I tried using Nulon Pro strength Octane boost whick wud kinda help me clean the injectors. The results so far are quite ok. But like I said, the car does stall sometimes and sometimes I have trouble starting the car.Well, the other thing is the CEL(Check Engine Light) which flashes occasionally.
As of now, the car runs perfectly fine. Its got low kms, cd player, P/s, central lock, power windows, ABS, clean interiors, new tyres, rego, roadworthy and everything that u wud ask for in a car. But I AM THINKING OF SELLING THIS CAR NOW ALTHOUGH I DONT REALLY WANT TO.ITS JUST COZ I FEEL LIKE THE CAR IS GOING TO GIVE ME TROUBLE AGAIN, AT LEAST THAT'S WHAT I MADE OUT FROM THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE SIMILAR CAR. DO U THINK I WILL GET THE SAME KINDA MONEY I PUT IN???
any comments on this???????Help me out guys
Cheers

Hi,
I have a 1994 Lantra ( Australia ) with 1.8. It has a rough idol and I have been told it may be the injectors but I thought I might see if anyone has any other idea's.
When you clamp off the return pipe, the idol is fantastic and normal but when you unclamp it the idol goes back to being rough. The engine also pings under load ( going up hills ). The timing has been checked and is out a bit but if you adjust it to normal the idol gets even worse.
Any idea's ? Any help would be much appreciated.

Also, does anyone know what brand of injectors these have and where I could get them in Australia other than Hyundai. The hmasservice site doesnt explain what type they are just how to remove them.
Thanks

Hey everyone,
Does anybody know if I can use a '95 Scoupe catalytic converter in a '94 Lantra?? Friend of mine needs a new cat, it's half empty mow and some parts are jamming the exhaust which leads to lack of power in low revs. I can probably get a Scoupe cat for few money and hope it will fit the Lantra and save a lot of money. Strange enough there's just nog single secondhand cat available, not on Ebay, nowhere.
Let me know if anyone can tell me more about this.
Thanx!!!

I was wondering if the motor out of a 1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse 2.0 can be transplanted into my hyundai. I believe they are the same size motor with different displacement. The engines both look very identical, as if they were both made Mitsubishi, or Diamond Star Manufacturing.

I have a 94 elantra 1.8l engine. It is an ok car considering that the ex owner did not take good care of it. There is one problem that i want to know if it is something that can be dangerous. When i turn to the left i hear a crunching noise from the right wheel. If i drive fast i have to turn the steering just half a circle and it comes but whene i am in a parking situation it comes if i turn it for at least a full circle. Know i know that it is the special bearing which is transfering the power from the gearbox to the wheel. I dont know what is it called but i know it moves in all directions. Is this normal for such an old car or shold i replace the part. Can the wheel fly out or something. Other than that the car is ok. I am in Iceland and there is just a little bit of rust on the car and it runs fine. Starts all the time like its new.

Well, I have been away from this forum for a while. Lots been happening here..lol.
Anyways, I was in the process of fixing my car. The problem of my car having 'intermittent starting problems' was just getting worse. I went to Hyundai dealers to check the code for CEL light checked. It said check alternator/alternator needs to be repaired. I went to a garage and they told me it was not the alternator. If the alternator was faulty, my car wudnt start . But as I said, it did sometimes, so they ruled out that probability. But they came up with something called coolant temperature sensor that was faulty. They told me to change it. But then they changed their mind and told me that the crank angle shaft sensor was faulty and needs to be repaired. I went to an auto electrician to check it, but he didnt find anything wrong with the CrankAngle sensor. But he came up with problems in fuel pump( as suggested by duke, i guess). he hooked a gauge to the fuel system to check for the fuel pressure. But it worked well. The car didnt play in front of him. He kept trying for like 2 days, but nothing went wrong. I mean the car started everytime he tried to. And for the CEL light, he changed the faulty Coolant Temperature sensor which did the work for me. well , as of now, the car starts good, have no problems yet( just got the car back from garage).
Hopefully, the car goes on good at least for another year or so.
Cheers,
Raj.
PS. I was almost done with selling the car( I bought it like 2 weeks back). The guys had 3 test drives. and they were ready to make the payment last night. But they called off the deal at the very last moment. Well, theres always next time..

Hey guys,
Ive just bought a Nov 95 Lantra GL last month. Somehow, it is causing me so much problem now.
1) Manual gearbox problem
Since I bought the car, gear changing sounds clunky and it isnt particularly smooth. I thought this is normal with Lantras but yesterday, I couldnt change the gear at all!!! I tried to clutch in the gear slowly and eventually it works. After a while, gear changing become nearly impossible again. Even at half clutch, the engine would vibrate worse than it normally does. What is the problem here? Is the synchromesh worn out? Is there any specific joints that are out of place? Is it the gearbox oil that I require? Or should I change the gearbox entirely? How much does each of those 4 cost, inclusive of labour?
2) Temperature gauge
The temperature gauge goes all the way up to higher than high once I start the engine, even when the engine is not hot. Im not sure what is wrong now coz Ive changed the sensor and the problem still persist. Should I change the thermostat next or is it just simply becoz the thermostat is dirty? If its dirty then is it possible for me to clean it on my own. Or is it the display board which needs to be changed?
It has done 168,000km thus far and I bought it for AUD$3,800 plus AUD$200 for rego. Just spend $150 on normal servicing plus gasket change.
Thanks for your help guys!!! Really appreciate it a lot!!!

Hi - BB from Sydney here.
I've owned a '92 Lantra GL for the last year and a half or so.
I've joined this forum to try and track down the reasons behind some of the strange, erratic and downright frustrating fuel/electrical problems my Lantra has.
Sorry for this long post - but I have some things I've wanted to say about my Lantra for some time. It's good to finally track down a site where my questions may be answered.
This post will be somewhat replicated in the newbie section - so, sorry if you've read this twice.
Intially, when I first bought the car 2nd hand the motor would 'surge' when the car was at idle. The revs would cycle through from about 700 to 1500rpm a dozen times before the car would settle down to a steady idle just under 1000.
Occasionally the motor would try it's surging trick between 200 and 1000rpm and usually it would stall.
Then - after 3 months or so the car wouldn't start at all. It would crank fine - but just wouldn't start. This wasn't a major hassle as I don't strictly need a car - but it was frustrating having a car in the garage that wouldn't go. So I spent a few hours every Sunday for 2 months changing the spark plugs, high tension leads, getting the fuel injectors cleaned, checking the fuel lines, changing the fuel filter, replacing the air filter etc etc etc you get the idea. Still no go.
I then downloaded a workshop manual for the car and tested circuits with a multi-meter. Everything checked out OK. In sheer desperation I went and bought a 2nd hand ECU and installed that. And still the #$%^ing car still wouldn't start. Then, when all hope was lost I thought I'd give it one last go before taking it to a professional..... and it started! The car started and ran fine as if it had just been left overnight - not for 3 months.
But the surging problem was still there - even with the different ECU. Bugger!
However, this problem changed over time, and instead of surging the car became difficult to start and would need to warmed up for 5 minutes before it could be put in gear, otherwise it would stall. And now, it's behaviour has changed again. The car starts and runs like a dream - except at idle - beacause it's now stuck on fast idle. I've adjusted the idle screw as far as it will go, but the car idles at 2000rpm. I have done nothing to the electrical or fuel system since installing the 2nd hand ECU - so what the hell is making the car change it's behaviour?
From a quick scan of this forum I see that many people have had one or more of these bizarre problems with their Lantra/Elantra.
Did you get them fixed, or do you just put up with them?
Thanks for listening,
Auntie BB

Hi, i'm running the Elantra 1.8 gls and recently i removed the stock intake system, and i installed a short ram intake.
Ever since i did this the engin doesn't idle properly and i have to keep the engine reving before i could drive.
this could be troublesome if your parked on a steep drive way or just stoped at a light. If this is indeed the intake sensor (just an idea) then is there a way to get around this? .........thanks!

I have a 94 elantra with a 1.8 l engine. It starts well even in the cold but there is a ticking sound whene its reving from 1500 and 1800 rpm. Even if i rev the engine and let go of the gas whene the rpms start to drop you hear the sound in thet rpm range and it stops when its idel. The car tends to be hard to drive untill the engine works for a minute. Sometimes i have to hold the gas pressed so it would not turn off. But there is a problem with the idel because sometimes it idels at 700 to 900 rpms which should be normal but the rpms sometimes jump to 2000 rpms. Sometimes this stays for a day or two and sometimes it will return to normal in 5 minutes. The other thing is that if i push the car and it comes to 4000 rpm it starts to make some hising noises and you can fell the car lose power for a second. Can you help.

I have a 95 Elantra and the rear drums were turned. I now need to know (the shop mechanic removed these) what the placement of the rubber seal is prior to installing the wheel seal itself. The seal I am inquiring about is a small rubber o-ring that is tapered and has seal ridges on the inside. I have new wheel seal with the metal surround, but I am unsure where these auxiliary seals go.

I have an 94 elantra with a 1.8 l engine. It is not automatic and whene i shift from second to third gear it makes an noise. Something like if you dont press the clutch and try to get it in gear. This happens mostly if i rev the engine over 3000 rpm. My friend mechanic tells me that i should just drive the car until the gearbox fails but i found a 96 model elantra gearbox which i can get for little money and
