Hello everyone
I am now the proud owner of pre-registered Terracan bought from a main dealer with 12 miles on the clock for 14 grand. What a bargin I cannot believe the way the motoring press over here in the UK have rated the car I have driven older Disco,s and Defenders and worst of all a Shogun this is so much better. Thats better just had to get that off my chest

Hi there all...Whilst I was parked up the other evening taking the dog for a walk, some A******E threw an egg at my Terracan from a passing car, with the result that the offside rear passenger door has ended up with an egg shaped peppering of chips down to the primer. Whilst I'm sure I'll get the usual yolk jokes, is there anyone out there who has used a company like Chips Away or similar, to give me some feedback or recomendations in the UK please.
Many thanks...Rossco

I note the standard terracan bars have a measily 34kg load rating meaning its unlikely i'd be able to use my roofbox . However 34kg is sufficient to carry a couple of lightweight mountain bikes . Unfortunately the standard bars seem rather wide & an odd profile has anyone found & fitted a pair of bike carriers to the standard cross bars ? If so what make & model & where from ? Thanks to anyone that can help ........

Hi there all....I am a new Terracan (2.9 CRTD manual) owner in Staffordshire UK. I've driven a Disco for 11 years, and Jesus, am I glad I made the change!
I did'nt bother listening to the radio in the Disco, as it got drowned out with background noise. Anyway, I was given an Ipod for a birthday present, and thought it would be great if I could hook it up to the stereo. The CD unit fitted is labelled VDO, with the number VDD C0142003040 on the main body. There is a socket free (mini iso) on the back for a changer control.
Without looking to purchase something like the Dension Ice-Link, I was after a simple auxiliary input lead and plug, into the back of the unit.
Anyone out there fitted an Ipod to a Terracan, or any suggestions as to how it can be done?
Many thanks.....Rossco
ps Anyone know if the VDO unit is anything to do with either Siemens or Philips?

Hi,
I am the proud owner of a Terracan Highlander. I just had to have a faulty audio unit replaced (MP3-01) and have the following minor query:
The previous unit always started up with the volume on 10, a bit too quiet. The new unit starts at 20, a bit too loud. In the tradition of Goldilocks, it would be nice to set it just right.... Does anyone know if there is a key sequence to change the starting volume?
Many thanks,
David

Hi Everybody in Hyundai World,
I Bought a new Terracan in November 2004 and it has done about 20,000 miles. It is the 2.9 DTI engine and ever since new the gear change when cold is difficult particularly from 1st to 2nd but when it warms up it is OK. Has anybody experienced this problem and managed to find a solution. It has been suggested the type of gear oil used by Hyundai is too thick for our climate in the UK.
Also anybody ever fitted a front push type towbar to the Terracan? If so have you experienced any problems with the fit?
Any comments or suggestions are welcomed.
Thanks,
Brian

Got my new terracan crdi auto in Aug 2005. From the start I noticed that the low fuel warning light did not work. Took car back to the dealer. A new sensor was installed under the warranty. Nothing happened, warning light still does not work with new sensor. I have even put in 75,5L of fuel in the 75L tank, and the light still did not work. Any one has a similar problem?

I have just bought a new Terracan and am about to order a towbar and electrics to fit myself.
Can anybody tell me anything about connection to the wiring harness? Does this vehicle have a dedicated connector block hidden away somewhere?
Otherwise, where is the best place to break in to the wiring for trailer socket and auxilliary caravan socket.
Thanks,
Les

I need to touch in some scratches on the rear wing of my 2003 Terracan. The upper body colour is the warm silver (code YK) but it seems to be impossible for Hyundai to supply a match to the grey metallic lower (bumper) mouldings. The touch-up paint they supplied is way off and my local Autopaint agent cannot find it in any of his paint cards. Has anyone got an actual recognisable paint manufacturers reference for this colour please.

Hi guys its me again just a few points of interest when comparing my 2006 terracan with my previous 2004 model both 2.9 diesel auto's.
Boy have they sorted this motor out for the UK roads, much tighter front end so no more bouncing on the front or wheel shake when hitting a pothole mid bend it finally handles superbly for its size its beats anything else I've driven (discovery, shogun etc)
My old terracan used oil from day one at a rate of 1 litre to 10000 miles this one has 3000 on the clock already and not used a drop, same engine ???????
It is also much quieter on the cruise (80mph) but not quite as smooth then again its not run in yet.
Hyundai say they have not done anything with the front suspension or steering but ask anyone who has driven both ages of car. Would be interesting to see 2006 model shocks on a 2004 model.
They finally sort it out and then discontinue it, strange marketing hopefully it means a superb new Terracan in the wings, I'll definetly be a customer wot a motor!!!!!!!!

Hello. I just bought a 2002 Terracan and I love it! Well, everything except only having a factory tape deck installed. I bought a new cd player to replace the factory tape deck/radio, but i'm not sure how to take the dash apart without breaking it to swap them out. I have the non-woodgrain style dash. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

I have just purchased an automatic 2.9 diesel highlander took it for it's first run over the mountains in easy going conditions and handled it well, but it developed a slight vibration about 70kph on highway. Took it back to dealer and they said they trimmed the drived train which fixed the problem but would not elaberate on details.
Quest; What does trimmed mean or was it just a wheel/tyre problem?
Also had trouble with reset switch on cruise control that would not return to previous set position, dealers have ordered a new module etc.
Has anybody else experienced these problems?

Hi guys,
I've got a new 2.9 CRDi. (not Highlander) Several times now I've flicked to 4wd on dirt, then back to 2wd just before returning to the blacktop. But she doesn't switch back. I have to stop, switch back and forward, then drive a few metres in reverse before she clicks out of 4wd. Anyone else had this issue?
cheers

Hi all!
Thought I'd make you aware of possible problems with the Terracan versions equipped with automatic gearbox and TOD (or ATT) transfer case from Borg Warner, which fails to lock 4x4 50/50 between front and rear axle in certain situations (even in 4L, which I think is preposterous!)
Please see the last two postings under the topic Workshop Manual.
Hyundai does not seem to recognize the problem, so if anyone experiences this issue and tells Hyundai about it, maybe it will shift them towards recognizing it. If they get enough pressure on the issue, they can't continue ignoring it forever.
The same problem applies to other cars with the same TOD transfer case from Borg Warner, such as Kia Sorento EXII, Ssang Yong Rexton RX 270 Xdi with automatic and TOD, and certain Isuzu models.
Any ideas and/or suggestions should be shared with other Terracan owners!
Regards
Sverre

Hi,
I am seriously considering a new Deisel Terra. but am a little dissolusioned by the apparent lack of rear luggage space. We do a bit of outback camping and sometimes need a second spare (can I get a rear carrier?) and extra fuel, as well as luggage and food etc... I intend to get the roof racks but am wondering about peoples feelings on the internal luggage space and pockets, underflorr storage etc......
Thanx

I have a 2001 manual terracan.
i have had a problem with the gearbox which only rears its ugly head whilst the car is cold or when the weather is cold (yes, it does get cold here in winter

) Unless I really change slowly from 2nd to 3rd, I get a crunch. The car is fine once it warms up or in warm weather.
Does anyone have a quick fix please? (apart from the obvious ones, like "let the car warm up longer" or "change gears slowly"). Maybe change to a lighter gear oil?
This problem only occurs when changing from 2nd to 3rd, no other gear changes are affected.

Hi
Another Dane, new to the forum
Just got my 2003 Terracan CRDi 2.9 and am looking for alloys.
Apparently the standard steel rims (ugly, by the way) are 6x15 ET35 with 235/75-15 and the OEM alloys are 7x16 ET35.
When searching for suitable wheels only a few are offered specifically for the model and none match the ET exactly. Size 17" doesn't offer more (but 17" tyres are more expensive).
The rim's specs (6 stud, 139.7 bolt circle, 110.1 center bore) and 16"+ dia is shared by several other makes/models but still ET is different.
Does anybody have experience with lower ET (ie 10 or 20)?
Ofcourse it would move the wheels further out in the arches (as would width above the std. 6") so by going to 8x16 ET 20 the outer rim edge would move 40.3 mm out whilst the rim inner edge would move 10.3 mm closer to the frame (all compared to the 6x15 ET35). The OEM alloys at 7x16 ET 35 are 13 mm closer to the frame. As the real issue in frame clearance is tyre size, these figures are merely of theoretical interest.
Danish law allows ET change of up to +/-10 (ET25-ET45 for the Terracan) but my interest is wether other ET's will work/fit?
Thanks for any input

Dear all, having recently found this site and the great wealth of infomration shared. has anyone discussed the possibility of a "Terracan Trek". Something like meeting up at Birdsville (or similar) and heading out in to the desert for a few days. I have done several drives now, mostly with Patrol and Cruiser owners. all they can talk about is thier rigs.
anyway if people are interested and would like to discuss further, please drop me a line or suggestion.
for our international friends, if you are interested in seeing the Aussie Outback, i'm sure if you wanted to come over we could organise a seat or two.
Cheers to all and thanks for the info shared.

I have owned the Highlander for 6 months covering 16,000KLM mainly towing a jayco freedom pop top caravan weighing about 1.6 tonne.
Drivability is good both on and off the bitumen having covered about 3,000 Klm on gravel in the north west of western australia. the cars quiet and has plenty of power for passing safeley.
I have elected to travel at 90 Klm/m while towing although she is quite happy at the legal limit of 100Klm/h. Economy varies between 18 L/100 to 21L/100 during the towing.
Sitting on the max speed limit of 110Klm/h on country roads without a load returns about 13 L/100.
My only concern is a harmonic vibration that comes in at about 70 Klm/h - 90 Klm/h peaking at about 85 Klm/h with quite a loud droning noise and a sharp vibration through the steering.
The dealers have balanced the front tailshaft achieving a minor improvement and checked the ride heights as normal all to no avail.
Are any other Terracan drivers experiencing the same phenonema which spoils a very capable car.

My Feb 04 3.5v6 auto terracan has a water/coolant leak at the back of the engine block. My dealer has had the car twice to try to fix this. First for one week then secondly for 3 weeks.
First time round they didn't fix it. Second time round they still didn't fix it.
I'm just wondering if anybody else has had the same problem. The leak is not a big one. It uses about half the volume of the over flow bottle every 2 weeks to a month.
Its hard to see the leak. I first spotted it when crawling around under the car just having a look at things underneath. I noticed coolant stains on the trans housing and followed them up the back of the engine. Soon I saw wet coolant and then sure enough a leak point at the back of the block.
There appears to be an aluminum manifold at the back of the block that directs coolant flow out of the block and either forward or backward,(I presume after or before its gone through the engine).
This aluminum manifold has a couple of short metal pipes pressed into it and rubber hoses attach to these two pipes. These would be the heater supply and return lines I would imagine.
Well the pipes look to be seeping coolant at the point where they are pressed into the aluminum manifold. Its a tough job to get to this part of the engine. The dealer told me they had to remove the intake manifold and injection etc etc. First time round they changed the rubber pipes back there. Thing still leaked.
Second time round, and this is pretty funny IMO, they wanted to change the small metal pipes that are press fit into the aluminum manifold. That would have been a fun job! I think they were a bit optimistic cause there isn't a heap of room back there between the block and firewall. But they couldn't get any new pipes. Apparently Hyundai doesn't have a part number for them?....I dunno what they did in the end but now I can see that the two short metal pipes are brown instead of metal coloured and ofcourse they still leak. (I think they just sprayed sealant on them)
So this time round, actually its tomorrow morning, I'm trying a different dealer service centre. My wife spoke to Hyundai head office here in Perth WA and they told us to take it there.
Personally, I think its the aluminum manifold at the back of the block. Because the pipes that are pressed into it seam to scale up/get covered with corrosion scale. So I think the union between the metal pipes and the allu manifold is getting electrolysis or something like that.
One funny thing though, at one point during the last time the dealer tried to fix it they were contemplating installing a new heater unit. Why they wanted to do that I have no idea, and it concerns me a bit.
Anyway, if anybody has any feedback or related stories on the water leak at the back of the engine block then I'd love to hear them.
Oh and I also have the intermittent droning sound that happens when you take the steering wheel just of centre. Most common between 40 - 80 kms/h. Like a harmonic drone that will just come in then go....then come some more....then gone and so on and so on. Drives me and my wife up the wall. I'm gonna get them to try to sort that one out aswell. From what I've read on this forum I think its the rear diff.
But other than those two issue's the car has been really good. I really love the thing. I've put a set of King's coils in the rear - $215AUD, best 200 bucks I've spent in a long time. I've put a 2.5 ton haymna reese style towing unit on her($320AUD). I've driven my family in it up to Broome WA, covering 6000kms for round trip. She never missed a beat. Eats up the outback miles without sweat. I think you would have to spend quite alot to come across a more willing motor for high speed overtaking. Drop the right foot at 100k's/h and the motor is like a turbine. She got me past triple and quadruple trailer long haulers with confidence. FYI, I did the first 2700 kms on $550 AUD worth of fuel. Not bad I reckon.
Next bling for her will be the front/rear adjustable Koni shocks and the stronger front torsion bars if I can get them. But first I've gotta get past my two problems.
Thanks for listening.

[B]Hi everyone.
I've got Terry - a 2005 2.9L Turbo Intercooled Diesel Terracan. Love it!
The manual gives me the impression that overdrive is to be on all the time - even on city driving -only off when you need to overtake on highway.
My experience of overdrive was only on when highway driving never city driving.
Can anyone clarify please?
