I wrote this article a few years ago in an attempt to dispel the myth that it is not possible to alter the engine control unit`s factory settings.
In fact the simple procedure outlined below should be performed after every performance mod. (such as fitting a cold air intake) & can even be of benefit if you`ve spent the whole week stuck in commuter traffic jams & want to restore your cars performance for the weekend!.
Resetting Your ECU (Engine Control Unit)
Hyundai cars are designed to be driven in all areas of the world, by people of all ages and levels of experience and sophistication. They are set to operate at all altitudes and temperatures and to use fuels of varying octane-rating and purity.
Unsurprisingly, the electronic engine control unit of your vehicle has been pre-set to a `one-size-fits-all` state of tune. Whilst the ECU has the capacity to adapt to the owners driving-style to a certain degree, the base-settings are extremely conservative and Hyundai's are famously set to run rich!
Most owners would naturally suppose that this situation is something over which they have no control, this is not the case.
This document will instruct any owner on how to change the ECU settings of their car, without the alterations being detectable by the Dealership, the Insurance Company, or indeed having any effect on the vehicle's warranty.
The operations described are recommended as a first step after taking over ownership of the car, after carrying out any performance modifications, or after any temporary change in the way the vehicle has been used ( i.e. city-bound use, towing etc.).
Firstly bring the car to normal operating temperature by driving for 15 minutes or so.
Now open the bonnet and disconnect the earth lead from the battery, ensure this is not touching any part of the bodywork - insulate if necessary - and wait 5 minutes.
Next depress the foot brake for 20 seconds - this will completely discharge the ECU's capacitors via the brake lights.
The next step (to be carried out immediately, while the engine is still warmed-up) is to carefully re-connect the battery earth lead, close the bonnet and now drive the car in a spirited fashion (accelerating rapidly through the gears, full-throttle straights etc. etc.) for a full 30 minutes. Try to choose a quiet time on the roads for this, (i.e. early on a Sunday morning!).
This period of driving will `re-educate` your ECU into adopting more aggressive timing curves and alter the fuelling to match. It will also allow the unit to recognise any modifications you have made and to react accordingly.
If, on the other hand, you are not interested in outright performance, but are more concerned with economy and flexibility, use your normal driving style during this 30-minute run!.
Over time, the ECU will slowly revert to the factory settings......especially if it is not being driven `spiritedly` on a regular basis.
Accordingly, many owners tend to do this reset monthly, or before a track day or even a long run.
Cheers,
Nick.

First & formost there are TWO distinct S-Coupe`s......The Mk.I car (up to & including `92) & the Mk.II (`93 to `95).
Only the Mk.II was available turbocharged.....with the Garrett T15.
The Mk.I car has a Mitsubishi engine (tranny on left as you face it) & ONLY this car can take other Mitsu. engines!.
The Mk. II car has Hyundai`s own in-house designed Alpha I engine....tranny on right.
The later `95 models featured modern distributor-less ignition with twin wasted-spark coil packs.
Any T2 Series Garrett turbocharger (T20/T25/T28) will bolt up & replace the turbo on the S-Coupe Turbo model, BUT, because of the flange & internal porting, it MUST have a stock Garrett flange OR be ex-Nissan............Mitsu/DSM flanges are NOT suitable & WON`T fit!.
Here is a photo of the S-Coupe Turbo`s stock Garrett T15 turbocharger which clearly shows it`s manifold mounting flange :-

Nick.

If you have any mk1 engine/swap/Mitsubishi questions I will try to answer them to the best of my ability as I have owned many mitsu/CSM cars. This is all USA info as it would take forever to compile lists of all possible world combos, but except for the years it may appy to other countries. I might omit any engines deemed unimportant such as carbed or lesser engines that would downgrade/not apply to our specific cars. Also if you have questions about your specific country I can help.
some interesting info:
1.5 litre 8v G4DJ 90-92 Scoupe =4g15
81hp 91ftlbs
1.5 litre 8v G4DJ 90-94 Excel =4g15
81hp 91ftbls
1.6 litre 16v G4CR 92-95 Elantra =4g61
105-113hp 102ftlbs
1.8 litre 16v G4CN 93-95 Elantra =4g67
124hp 116ftlbs
2.0 litre 16v G4CP 92-95 Sonata =4g63
128hp 121ftlbs
2.4 litre 8v G4CS 89-91 Sonata =4g64
116hp 142ftlbs
3.0 litre 12v G6AT 89-93 Sonata = 6g72
142hp 158ftlbs
Remember Mitsu didn't build these motors Hyundai just bought blue prints from Mitsu. There are suttle changes in the blocks so assume nothing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Engine designations:
for example 4g15 means
4=4cyl
g=gas
1=series of engine
5=number in which the engine was invented/added to mitsu's designation
so the the 15 is a fluke it doesn't mean 1.5 litres . because a 4g63 is 2.0 not 6.3 litres. a 6g75 would be a 6cyl. The series can also be a help as a 4g63 dohc turbo and head will fit on a 4g64 dohc block to make a 2.4 litre stroker.
Mitsu built cars:
89-92 1.5 litre colts/summit/mirage's came with 4g15's they came in 8 and 12v flavors (93-on have the engine on the opposite side, and 89 and before have carbed engines)ECU's are Interchangeable with all 4g15 cars.
81hp91ftlbs ->8v, 92hp93ftlbs->12v
89-92 1.6 litre colts/summit/mirage's come with a 4g61 dohc (it is n/a except for the rare 1.6 turbo 89 colt/mirage gt)
123hp101ftlbs->non turbo 135-145hp->turbo
91-99 3000GT/Stealth's all came with 3.0l 6g72's in 12vsohc/24vdohc/24vdohc turbo flavor's.
161hp185ftlbs->12v, 218-222hp201-205ftlbs->24v, 300-320hp307-315ftlbs-> 24v turbo.
90-94 2.0litre Eclipse's/Talons/Lasers came with a4g63 turbo 16v or a non turbo 16v
135hp125ftlbs->16v nonturbo, 180-195hp203ftlbs->turbo
90-94 1.8litre Eclipse's/Talons/Lasers came with a 4g37(aka g37) 8v which shares about 45% of parts with the 4g15(the engines are almost electrically identical) and you can swap ecu's, throttle body (don't remember what year), MAF and injectors for more power. it is not of the same generation so head/cam/block swapping is impossible. If this engine is swapped in, you can take a turbo from a 85-89 turbo g32b 1.6 colt/mirage and have a 8 valve sleeper.
92hp105ftlbs
1992-1995 Expo/Vista/Summit Wagon Van's came with 1.8 8v 4g67 and 2.4 4g64 1.8 8v. These cars also have similar electrical systems to the 4g15 as the ecu plugs right in. But I have not explored this avenue due to lack of time.
113hp116ftlbs->8v 1.8, 116-136hp136-145ftlbs->8v 2.4
1990-1993 Galant came with the 2.0 litre 4g63 in 8v/16v/16v turbo flavor's. The 4g63 Sohc 8v is similar electricaly to the 4g15, but again I haven't had the time to play around with this combo.
102-121hp116-120ftlbs->8v, 135-144hp125-134ftlbs->16v, 195hp203ftlbs->16vturbo
1994 Galant GS came with the ultra rare 4g64 2.4 litre 16v dohc engine putting the 8v version of the 2.4 litre engine to shame. This engine weighs only a little more than the 4g63 so is a powerful upgrade.
160hp160ftlbs
playing around with the 92-95 Hyundai Elantra motor mounts(1.8&1.6) and stock mounts will yeild results. The mounts you need are: the top L-shaped mount, the front engine bracket, as well as the rear, the crossmember that goes from the front of car to the back or middle of car. Also need the dsm transmission bracket( not the rubber mount) if swapping tranny. If not swapping tranny make sure to get an eclipse non turbo flywheel/clutch/pressure plate combo. I do believe the mounts from a 1.6 turbo 85-88 will mount a 4g37 engine which is theoretically a drop in swap....theoretically.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any suggestions welcome!

hi all again,
after all the problems i had when i first got my Scoupe, everything seems to be going well now
thankfully
the only thing which is of a slight concern is that when i floor it, not all of the lights are lighting up on the turbo gauge
when normally driving, i have usually at least one, if not both of the green lights glowing, apart from when the accelerator is not depressed
now, when i floor it, most of the time i only get 3 red/orange lights glowing, not all 4
the 4th light does sometimes flash on for 1 second at the beginning of flooring and then goes out
but most of the time when flooring in 2nd, 3rd or 4th, it doesn't light up at all
any ideas please?
thx

It surprises me how difficult it is to find something as simple as:
"Where exactly is the ECU located?"
Searches through the various shop manuals, as well as a search on google and here, have failed to bring anything more than a vague picture showing the ECU was above-ish the fusebox.
Upon removing the panel underneath the dash/steering wheel, I discovered a myriad of connectors and wires (and relays), but no ECU. It appeared that it may be behind the firewall, although that makes very little sense.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. It is a 1993 Scoupe, no turbo. Any other info you need I will gladly provide it.
Thanks!

hi again everyone
with regard to my previous post about my engine cutting out (edit: forgot to put the car details here, '94 scoupe gt turbo)
i left a post with the description of the problem on a site called "allexperts" and have received an answer from one of the guys on there
he sys that it sounds like the crankshaft sensor
he has given me a description of how to check the codes, but it's a bit too technical for me asnd didn't include any pictures for positional reference
if anyone has any diagrams of how this is done, that would be fantastic
also
what is the dutch translation of "crankshaft sensor" please
and what would be the cost of this item and/or the total cost of replacing via a garage/main dealer if you know (i can check this myself, but would rather get a rough idea before asking at the dealer incase it's really expensive (i.e. more than the car is worth) and i feel silly)
thanks again for your input
edit 2: i've just reset my ecu (thanks to VALKYRIE's instructions in the sticky)and so far after 20 km it seems to be running very smoothly, but i'll see how it goes when i go to work (25km each way), hope it will be ok
i would still like the info about the crankshaft sensor though please

Well im about to buy a Scoupe for a really good price and after im done with all the regular maintenance stuff I plan on modding it a little bit.
I dont want a 300-400whp car, just something reliable and fun. I heard somewhere that the stock internals can handle up to 300whp and my goal would be around 190-220whp if possible.
I really dont know much about this car or engine so if anyone could help with any advice in reaching that goal it will be appreciated.
I would like to know things like, how much PSI the stock internals can handle, what other Turbine's can i swap in, what size injectors, fuel pump etc etc, things like that.
Any other advice on what I should look after with this engines would help too.
Thanks!

So this was the dream, Scoupe Turbo making 200kw 400nm @ 1.8 bar boost

I was driving the car as i do, i was cruising alot and then there was a Missfire, so i found a open strecth of road and gave it a good run as a i got to 5th gear the car just cutout

and would not start back up, i look under the car and it seem as if there was a Water leak but no oil so that was a good sign. Towed the car to my firends house and sunday we took off the head.

Piston Number 1 is GONE and so is the conrod and it appears there is a Small hole in the block.
Well life was going good till this. I am dead broke and this car needs a Entire new ENGINE

Two weeks pass and now it time to see what is Salvageable...

well the head looks okie, i will need a new set of conrod and see if the block can be repaired.
Apparently not , the conrod punched thre wa oil channel there for it cannot be repaired

.
from the outside there is just a hairline crack.
So **** now i need a new block. The price of a Bare block is half the price of a 2nd hand engine and then i will still need x2 new conrod so i bought a second hand accent engine. I bought it and dropped it off at the Mechanic straight away for him to strip so we can send it away for engineering so i dont even have a pic. I thought it was a Scoupe LS engine cos it had a metal intake manifold but Alas it was a Accent engine. so how im rebuilding a ccent engien that wionte fit a scoupe Gearbox

here is the broken bits

HI,
i've just got myself a '94 Scoupe GT Turbo and there are a couple of things that one or more of you may be able to help me with
as i've never owned one of these before, i'm not sure what is normal for these cars and what is a problem
here is the list of naughties:-
steering feels light (and there seems to be quite a lot of play) at motorway speeds (100+ kmh) and not very awe inspiring in bends
suspension feels a bit spongy whilst driving quickly too, sort of lolloppy (if that's even a word) and going over anything which isn't perfect tarmac makes it roll about a bit (maybe this has something to do with the steering too, or the steering has something to do with this)
now, this is a strange one
i've only had the car since yesterday and it had been sitting at the dealer for 3-4 weeks in the sub zero conditions etc. and has only done 1300km since the last mot in november. On the way back home from picking it up (about 60-70 km) there were no problems until i had travelled roughly 50km and then it just cut out. I pulled onto the hard shoulder feeling dismayed. I tried starting it again and it was acting strange, it was catching a bit then cutting out again (the rev counter was flitting up and down too). Eventually it started again and has been running fine since
firstly i thought it may be the fuel filter, as the car had been standing for a while in sub zero conditions and possibly some water had frozen and caused a blockage
now, i've taken a look under the bonnet and it'll probably be wise to change the cap and leads as well as the filters and oils, but the thing that got me was the lead running from the distributor cap (not the spark plug leads, but the other one going out to the coil) was not really tight on where it was going, it just seemed to be sitting in there quite loosely, so i've tried to fit it a bit snugger (but it's a bit of a pain to get to it properly as its under the injection unit). is it normal on this model that this particular lead is quite loose? because every other car i've owned it is just as tight on both ends
i'm hoping that this is the reason for the cut-out and a new sets of leads is all that's needed
also, there seems to be a vibration between about 3500 and 4-4500 rpm which sounds exhausty, or maybe the heat shield
any advice would be greatly appreciated and if you need more info on one of these problems, please feel free to ask
thank you very much

Hello
I have just purchased a 1995 Scoupe Mvti its seems in good condition with 61000 on the clock.
I am already looking to make improvements and would like a few bits of information.
What is the PCD and offset required to fill the arches as the stock wheels look rediculous?
Does anyone have and ECU pinout to allow me to fit a piggyback ECU.
Thanks Very much

Hi, Ive got a 93 Scoupe 15L auto. The problem is the car has been slowly losing power over the last week to the point now where I cant get it out of my driveway which is a slight hill.
Ive changed plugs and leads, checked the fuel filter, checked the timing belt for correct engine timing. All this seems fine. There is no engine check light on. When I rev the car up in neutral it gets to a point then the revs just die and it bogs down serverly and starts hesitating.
I cant get the car to a mechanic to inspect as it wont make it there.
Any ideas?

I use the original 60/2 Triggerwheel and the stock ignition with the Bosch igintion modul the engine RPM is right so I think the problem is not about the trigger wheel...but im not sure...

Hi, i am helping a friend out with a 1994 S Coupe 4cyl 12 valve engine.
Car is in Edmonton Canada so it will see some cold temps this winter usually about -10c and gets down to -30c.
I am going to service the car and the owners manual is long gone, i just need some basic info or a PDF owners manual or repair manual.
What i need to know.
1.Good engine oil for a winter climate, is the engine fussy or will 5W30 Syntec be OK.
2. Engine oil capacity with filter change.
3. Fram filter part number for engine.
4. Good transmission oil for cold climate, it has an auto box.
Any help and advise is much appreciated.

Hello Forum.
I've got a little problem (maybe big) I recently purchased a newer scoupe N/A because my "old" scoupe is very rusty.
Plans was to build over all the good turbo stuff in the fresh n/a car, and then pay the coverment the difference between n/a and turbo so the rebuild get lawful in denmark.
The problem is so :
In Denmark only the turbo fitted scoupe officiel imported, so they dont have the n/a paper in stock.
And without this there is very little chance to get the rebuild approved.
So please help my with a copy off this document, preferably an EU country.
Regards from Denmark, Henrik RS.

So i got the car to start but it won't stay running for long it stalls out, so i checked the timing and the fuel pressure and it all appears to be good. If anybody has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated to try to get this thing to finally run

Did anyone else experience the same problem: I have a scoupe turbo with a rebuild engine, ported head, intake etc. with removed catalyst and straight open muffler, but otherwise stock as fueling and ecu is concerned even the air filter is stock.
At first it was runing just fine, then I crashed it and it stood still for about two years. I bought a new car and swaped the engine and then the problems started. Almost every time when I floor it in 5th and sometimes even in 4th gear it starts to accelerate and when it gets in the upper rev range it starts to jerk violently like a missfire or fuel cut usualy twice in one second interval and then I let of the gas and sometimes it sounds like a backfire in the exhaust.
I then mounted a front mount intercooler and changed injectors to 300cc but it's still the same, maybe even worse. It does this only at WOT and when the speed reaches 170-180km/h or more, if I hold the pedal at about half throttle so only 2 orange lights are lit it gets past 200km/h (120mph) no problem and very smoothly. I suspect it's related to being on full boost for a longer period of time, because it goes through first three gears too fast to cause it.
The main question to me is, is it fuel, boost or spark related? The fueling should be very rich becouse of the injectors, but as I said it was the same with stock ones, the main concern here is if the fuel pump is a problem since it's from a non-turbo scoupe (don't know if they are the same). Boost is at it's factory settings so it shouldn't be a fuel cut (I suspect fuel cut takes the fuel completely and the car looses all power not in intervals) unles the boost controler is not working properly (is it possible it stays closed if malfunctioned) or there is a boost leak (does the ECU read MAF when on WOT?). So only thing left is spark blowing out or maybe bad wires. I sure hope it's not detonating, but then the engine would be blown long ago.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

Hey all my Scoupe turbo has been parked for 2 weeks now. i cant get it to spark. To day the Megasquirt guru was at my place and he says the crank angle sensor is unable to count the teeth? thats why the ecu can not give off a spark/ is not able to start/starting.
So after my initial engine rebuild the car was sent home cos it would not start. So i tested the crank angle sensor and it did not show continewity or give off a resistance= sensor is fucked right? so i pull out the sensor and notice a dent in the crank angle sensor. So i get a Replica of a accent it fits perfect. gives a resistance value and show continewity. but still the car cant fire.
So the megasquirt guy test the ecu and All the wiring and says the Crank sensor is not giving the signal. so eithe the flywheel is not alined. teeth are bent or there are teeeth missing. so i phone hyundai and ask them WTF is going on and they say the scoupe flywheel can only bolt on one way and doesnt need to be alined.
so they are sending someone out tommorow on a sunday but i dont know what they are going to check. all i can think is they will bring a coil pack and a crank angle sensor with. but all Hyundai crank angle sensors must be 60-2 as a accent 1500 also has 60-2.( and thats a entry level hyundai) So its logical a 16/18/2000cc will also have a 60-2 and either ay a 60-2 is a 60-2.
How do i sove any suggestions?

Hey guys,
Just recently picked up a parts car for fixing up my interior and the engine was still in good nick.
It has around 170 000kms on the clock.
Looking for offers. Postage would not be included in the price though I can get a calculation to where you live and whatnot.
Give us a shout if your interested.
Cheers,
Rednut

Hello all.. Im new to h-f.com. Only found this site last night and have spent a few hours going through a lot of the topics. Im really impressed not only by the technical savvy of some you out there but also the good natured way in which everyone communicates here.
I own a 91 scoupe gls n/a. I bought it to teach my wife to drive because it seemed like a good car for her to learn on and was reasonably priced.
Havent had to many problems with it, which is a blessing because Im not the most mechanically adept person around!
I had a few problems early on but that was more through previous owner(s)? neglect more than anything else. Its quite straight on one side but has a couple of small dents on the left hand side. Ive had a new alternator put in , changed the spark plugs , oil and filter and it seems to be running as good as can be expected.
I do have one question. Id like to fit what we call in Australia a "pod" filter (I believe its called a ram intake or something like that overseas). The only thing Im unsure of is the what I think is the air flow sensor (bear with me ...told ya I wasnt very mechanical) I have included a photo I found in another post, hope Im not breaking any rules. Id just like to know if the way this persons pod filter and air flow sensor are set up correctly? So if I just copy this persons set up I should be sweet ?
The first photo is not my car.. the following photos are of my car....
Any help would be great. I dont plan on doing much with this car. Maybe some new rims and try to fix the left hand side panels and of course the pod filter. Thanks for taking time to read.....

Hi,
i want to change my steering box because my actual box has got too much clearance. I'm looking for a non-power assisted steering box because i want to take out all the parts of the power steering system. At the moment, i'm running the car without the belt for the power steering pump.
In Germany, it's hard to find a non-power assisted steering box for the Scoupe. Did the Scoupe come without power steering? I'm planning to install a steering box from a Pony, Accent or Lantra (or something like that) because the boxes look very similar (just without the hoses for the hydraulic oil).
Do you guys know if any steering box fits into the Scoupe? It could be that the track width vary but hopefully i just can change the tie rods...
I hope someone can help me!
Many thanks!
Cheers,
Martin
